Ellis’ visits Sanford
By JONATHAN TIILLY

In four years’ time, a college
football program can change a
great deal. Players become famous
one year, and are gone the next.
It’s not very often that one sees a
player being the center of attention
for four years.
South Carolina quarterback
Todd Ellis is that rare player.
Smtv his freshman year, Ellis Ml
been in the spotlight for the Game
cocks and has seen his share of ups
and downs, both for himself and
the team.
The highs have included owning
nearly every Gamecock passing re
cord, starting as a redshirt
freshman and breaking every
NCAA rookie passing record, going
to the 1987 Gator Bowl and the
1988 Liberty Bowl, and giving him
self a chance to be the NCAA’s all-
time leading passer this season.
The lows have included
throwing almost twice as many in
terceptions as touchdowns, seeing
four different offenses during his
college career, hearing a great deal
of criticism from fans and experts
expecting more than what he is
producing, seeing his team be ac
cused of wide-spread steroid use
and feeling the effects of Coach Joe
Morrison’s sudden death in Feb
ruary
Through it all, Todd Ellis re
mains steady.
“It was a very difficult situation
last year," Kills sax! "With all the
disappointments Inst year, and
then to have Coach Morrison die,
the one stability on the team, it
was a very difficult situation."
But the new coach, Sparky
Woods, has handled it well, Ellis
said. Woods, who was the head
coach at Appalachian State, has
led the Gamecocks to a 2-1-1 record
this year.
‘Things are going fine this year,”
Ellis said. "He has a hands-on ap
proach and has done a fine job,
helping each guy come along."
Ellis has also done fine. Faced
with his fourth new ofTense in four
years, Ellis has responded with
769 yards through the air and a
55.9 percent completion rate. He
also has less interceptions than
touchdowns. Ellis said the chan
ging offenses does make things dif-
last time
ficult.
“It’s tough," he said. “Most good
players are built on repetition, but
I’ve seen different offensive coordi
nators go and whole offenses
change, and it’s tough not being
able to build on the repetition
having one offense gives you.”
This year, Ellis will be getting a
little more help in his new offen
sive scheme. Woods and offensive
coordinator Art Wilkins have come
up with a more balanced attack for
South Carolina, using not only the
talents of Ellis, but running back
Harold Green as well. It’s enough
to make a head coach sweat.
Georgia head coach Ray Goff
said, “It’s going to be a great chal
lenge. They've got a first round
draft pick at quarterback and a
first-round draft choice at tail
back *
The last few Georgia games that
Ellis has made an appearance in
have definitely been challenges. He
said the Gamecocks are as ready os
always for his final one, playing in
a stadium he loves to play in.
“I’ve always er\joyed playing in
Sanford Stadium," he said. The
crowd’s just great."
