Ga. Theater has new format

Reggae/funk thrashters 24-7 Spyz cause deafness to a capacity
crowd at the Uptown Lounge on Wednesday Night. Stage diving was
rampant among the perspiring fans.

When I heard the Georgia
Carafe and Draft was closing ear
lier this month, I was irate.
Why close a 99-cent movie the
ater where you can drink and
smoke? And it’s downtown, too.
The good news is the 100-year-
old building — former home to a
YMCA, a morgue and, since 1936,
a theater — will not be turned into
upscale shops and offices, as has
been the fate of so many old the
aters around the country.
Admission will no longer be 99
cents, but the entertainment won’t
be “Weekend at Bemie’s." either.
Bill Anderson and Kyle Pilgrim,
who is the owner of the Uptown
Lounge, bought the building from
United Artists at an undisclosed
price and will reopen it Monday as
a concert hall.
"What we’ve got lined up so far
are new music acts — Pylon,
Drivin’ and Cryin’, Dreams So
Real, The Connells — but we’re not
going to limit it to rock,” Anderson
said. “Well have comedy, country
music, or anything that can go in a
theater of this size.”
The owners and their crew have
been working hard restoring the
600-seat theater to its 1936 art-
deco glory.
‘This place is solid," Frank
Mason said He is helping with the
restoration and will be a bartender
when the theater opens. “This
building will be around a lot longer
than the Tate Center, and the
sound in here is fantastic. Better
than the Roxy."
Mason also worked in the
Georgia Theater ten years ago
when its former owners previously
tried to turn it into a concert hall
‘We did a good business back
then," Mason said, “but there was
more competition. I mean, it’s
tough to draw a consistent crowd
when people could go to free con
certs at Legion Field."
Since then, University officials
have prohibited drinking at Legion
Field concerts as well as at Memo
rial Hall concerts
‘The University doesn’t provide
a place for concerts anymore, ex
cept the Tate Center, and you can’t
drink there,” Anderson said.
“When you go to a concert, you
want to drink beer The University
won’t let students do that.”
Anderson said he doesn’t envi
sion much competition from the
other clubs in town either.
The Georgia Theater will con
centrate on out-of-town bands, and
the shows will be earlier, generally
Anderson, Pilgrim, Delk, and Mason
starting about 8 p.m., to avoid con
flicting with later shows at the
other clubs in town.
The owners also plan on showing
movies a couple times a week. The
movies will be 50s and 60s cult
movies," Anderson said
“And hey, if we don’t make it as
a concert hall, we can always go
back to showing movies. Or turn it
into offices..."
Pylon uill play at the opening of the
Georgia Theater, 215 N. Lumpkin
St., Monday, October 2 at 8 pm.
Tickets are $6.
