The University of Georgia

But lams hasn’t dramatically

“We have to play Georgia vol

Senior transfer: Looking to help Dogs this weekend
By RANDY WALKER
Sports Writer

beginn its fall senaon this weekend
with tournaments in Panama City,
Fla., and Clemson, S.C. A1 Parker,
Jim Childs and Mike Morrison
travel to Panama City for the Bay
Point Invitational while Jack
Frierson, Hector Nevares, Murphy
Jensen and Marsh Butler will par
ticipate in the Clemson Fall
Classic.
“We want to find out where we
stand,” coach Manuel Diaz said.
‘The guys have really improved in
the two weeks of practice and now
we want to see how we relate to
other teams."
Bay Point, a rare collegiate clay
court event, hosts a national field
of players which include seven of
the top ten returning players from
last year. The slower clay surface
may introduce a timing problem as
the players must become acclim-
mated to the slower ball speed
after playing on faster hard courts
for the past few weeks. However,
the baseline games of Parker,
Childs and Morrison are suited
well to the clay courts.
Parker, seeded No. 2, behind
Mike Brown of Arkansas, faces
Daniel DeBoer of Miami in the first
round and will look to improve
upon his quarter-final showing of a
year ago. Childs drew third-seeded
Stephane Simian of South Caro
lina while Morrison takes on Nick
Barone of Ole Miss.
Three of the four Dogs going to
Clemson will see their first action
representing Georgia.
The lone Georgia veteran on the
Clemson trip, Frierson feels the
tournament will make a statement
to the players and the coaches.
‘The tournament will be indica
tive of where you stand in your
game and well find out what we
need to improve on for the winter
and spring," said Frierson. “It will
show us what we have to expect
from our players and where well
stand for the season."
The Clpnvmn tournament, con
versely of Bay Point, will be played
on the slick courts of the Clemson
Tiger Tennis Center and is divided
into three divisions.
