Dental clinic soothes students’ pains
By KEVIN ATWILL
Contributing Writer
Have your teeth been a sore spot in your life
lately? Do nagging toothaches, cavities, or
fillings have you down? Health Services may
have the cure you’ve been looking for.
Unbeknownst to a large portion of the
campus, the Gilbert Health Center has a com
plete dental facility available on ita third floor
to serve University students.
George Pirie, the resident dentist, said, “It
was devised to encourage students to get their
teeth checked Many students get regular
checkups for 17 years, but never seem to get
treuted once they leave for school. It’s just
something here for the students and their
spouses.”
Pirie is joined in the facility by a dental assis
tant, a dental hygienist and a receptionist. He
said the staff of four handles from 3,000 to 4,-
000 patients a year with a varying daily av
erage of about 12 to 13. Walk-ins are accepted,
however, appointments are recommended
The clinic primarily relies upon word of
mouth publicity because as Pine said, “Heavy
advertising would breech the staff and we want
to avoid that overflow.”
Dental Assistant Pamela Paige said, “Traffic
can sometimes be hectic anyway, but usually
things around here run smoothly.”
The dental clinic offers consultations, emer
gency care, restortations, extractions, indi
vidual deunings and referrals. The office is
open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through
Friday
Pirie said the clinic offers a dental plan
where students fill out a form, pav an initial fee
of $46.00, and a minimum fee of $20.00 there
after for subsequent cleanings.
He said patients get a cleaning flouride treat
ment, an X-ray, individual oral hygiene instruc
tions, dental charting and an examination by a
doctor.
“After that we try to go on a fee-for-service
basis,” he said
We do a great deal of referral business as
well. We don’t do crowns, bridges, dentures, or
orthopedic work, but can put you in touch with
a private office in town tnat does,” Pirie said.
“It is a common experience for students to come
in with sore wisdom teeth though, so we doper-
form some oral surgery and root canal work in
addition to sealants and fillings.”
For payment purposes, dental insurance is
accepted he said. The dental program isn’t part
of the student health fee.
“You pay and then collect from the insur
ance,” Pirie said “We can fill out the forms or
you con bring them in. Only in certain situa
tions can a patient charge their (fees), and if the
total cost exceeds $70.00 special arrangements
ure made.”
