Editor'i note: this is part one of a
two-part series.
Look, everybody and his Aunt
Erma is doing a “Best of 1989“ list,
but, I ask, what good does it do the
average Joe? What good does it do
to tell you "Batman," “Cousins,”
and “War of the Roses" were some
of the best films if 1989 (which they
were)? What if I told you “Do the
Right Thing" was one of the year’s
best (I would be lying if I did, but
what if)? Could my words compel
you to see these films? Almost cer
tainly, you’ve already heard of
these movies and decided whether
or not you want to see them.
Much more valuable is a list that
lints out the small films you may
ave never even heard about. That
way you can look for, at least on
video, some real gems you might
have otherwise missed.
Keep in mind that “Glory,”
“Driving Miss Daisy” and a lot of
that highbrow stuff haven’t even
opened in Atlanta yet, so I haven't
seen them.
So here it is (I chose thirteen be
cause these were all rather un
lucky at the box office) —
The Thirteen Best Movies of
1989 that You Probably Didn’t
See (But Should) — Part I
1. Dead Calm. (On video.) My
very favorite movie of the year. It
stayed in Athens only about two
weeks, and attracted maybe ten
paying customers. Produced by
George Miller of “Mad Max’ fame,
it’s a wonderful thriller about a
couple terrorized on the high seas
by a mysterious young man from a
sinking black ship. Superbly acted,
grippingly directed and beautifully
filmed, "Dead Calm” is a poetic
masterpiece.
2. Blazfe. (Still in the theaters.)
Just opened in Athens, but it’s not
last year
breaking any box office records.
Paul Newman is Earl K. Long, the
savvy, flamboyant Louisiana gov
ernor, whose romance wih stripper
Blaze Starr created a scandal in
the late ’80s. The film, written and
directed by Ron Shelton, is a su
perb love story. Like Shelton’s pre
vious film, “Bull Durham,"it sticks
in the mind long after the credits
are over. Newman will definitely
get an Oscar nomination.
3. Heathers. (On video.) One
day at the Tate Center was the en
tirety of its theatrical run in
Athens. Thank goodness for video.
“Heathers" is an acidic satire of
high school life, with Christian
Slater as a miniature Jack Nich
olson who helps Winona Ryder
(“Beetlejuice") get even with her
teen tormentors. Sort of a “Carrie
meets The Joker and has Fast
Times at Ridgemont High." It’s the
coolest, the hippest film that came
out last year.
4. Vampire's Kiss. (On video.)
A fascinating (and extremely
weird) exploration of insanity and
despair. Nicolas Cage is a chic-er-
than-thou New York executive and
a womanizing sleazebag who
Paul Newman: A hit in ‘‘Blaze”as colorful La. Governor

ehe may or may not be a vampire,
and he may or may not be turning
into one himself.
Convinced that he it, Cage dons
f ilastic fangs and goes about
earning to walk and talk (and
sleep) like a creature of the night.
Cage’s physical performance de
serves an Oscar, although Holly
wood politics assure that he won’t
even get a nomination for this rela
tively unknown film. Likewise,
supporting actress Maria Conchita
Alonso won’t get the nomination
she deserves.
5. Paper House. (On video.)
Never came to any Athens theater.
This is a wonderful, surreal thriller
that’s a little hard to explain.
When a little girl gets seriously ill,
she starts going into a surrealistic
dream. Her dreamland consists en
tirely of things that she’s drawn in
the sketch pad she keeps beBide
her bed. Whenever she draws
something new, it appears in her
dream.
This is all fine and dandy until
her poorly-drawn father appears as
a mishapen lunatic, spoiling her
Garden of Eden. The set design in
the dreamland is superb (the best
of ’89) — it actually looks just like
the child's drawings.
6. Earth Girls Are Easy. (On
video.) Another contender for hip
pest movie of the year, this fea
tures three day-glo aliens crash
landing in the pool of valley girl
Geena Davis (Oscar-winner for
“The Accidental Tourist").
The alien leader and romantic
interest is Jeff Goldblum, Davis’
costar in ‘The Fly” and real-life
husband. It’s a stylish, mindless
delight —the funniest movie of
1989.
Winona Ryder: Flashy and flippant in "Heathers'
