Saturday basketball game is a chance
for Dogs to get back into SEC race
By DAVID PACE
Sports Writer
It isn’t necesiuinly a must-win
situation for the men's basketball
team, but Saturday night’s game at
home against Vanderbilt rep
resents a chance for the Dogs to get
back into the race for the SEC
crown.
There isn’t a whole lot of pres
sure on us,” said Rod Cole. “We’re a
pretty good basketball team. We
just have to go out there and play
with confidence and do the things
that we work on in practice."
Vanderbilt comes into the game
atop the SEC with a 3-0 conference
record und 10-2 overall. But first-
year couch Eddie Fogler isn’t ex
pecting an easy outing in Athens.
“It will be difficult to say the
least," said Fogler. They always
play well at home "
Playing at home could be the
best thing to happen for the Dogs
since their Inst two outings away

“Well, we’re not a good road
team,” eaid Litterial Green. “Prom
what I've heard we've never had a
really good road team. But that’i
not a good excuee. We have to learn
to play good on the road if we're
going to be a good team.”
The Commodore* beat Miasis-
aippi Wednesday night in Nash
ville. Tenn. Junior guurd Scott
Draud had a career high 30 point*
and hit aix of aeven from three
point range and will provide a
atrong challenge for the Doge
guard* to keep in check.
They have a lot of good
ahootere,” aaid Doga ahooting
guard Litterial Green. “That's
their strength, their perimeter
game.”
Draud la the leading scorer for
the Commodores, averaging 16.3
point* per game. And ae evidenced
in the game against Ole Misa, he
can be deadly from the three-point
line.
His partner in the backcourt.
Derrick Wilcox, ia second in team
scoring overage with 12.8 points
per game.
For Vanderbilt, forwards Todd
Milholland and Eric Reid match up
well against Alec Kessler and Mar
•hall Wilson for the Dogs. Milhol-
land comes into tomorrow nights
matchup averaging 10.6 points and
6.2 rebounds.
Recently, Kessler was named
SEC Player of the Month for De
cember. And even though he has
struggled the last two games, he
hae maintained hie 20 point a
game scoring average.
*‘V.t lerbilt’s a real gtx»d team.
They’re definitely on a roll,” said
Kessler. “It’s going to be tough for
us to beat them.”
Kessler, if he stays healthy, has
a chance to become Georgia’s all-
time leading scorer this year. He
started the season 15th in Bulldog
scoring history and has moved up
to seventh place thus far for the
season.
The Dogs haven't been frus
trated by recent play and expect to
come out and play well tomorrow
night.
'it feels good to be back home,”
said Green. “Weil have our fans
out there cheering for us and our
adrenaline will be flowing. I feel
well go out there and give it our
best.”
The Dogs traditionally play
better before the home folks and
they are a better team than what
they have shown the last two
games. The play of Georgia's re
serves will be a key factor in the
contest. Forward Lem Howard and
guards Jody Patton and Shaun
Golden will be counted on to give
the Dogs solid ploy olT the bench.
“This Vanderbilt game, we
really need it,” said Howard. “I
think we play better and more in
tense at home."
The funeral services for Harry "Squab" Jones will be held at 11
a.m. on Saturday. Jan. 13 at Hill Rrst Baptist Church. It Is lo
cated at Pope and Reece streets In Athens. Food donations can
be given to the church after the service.
