New book unfolds
true crime stories
A Book Review of "The Corpse Had
A Familiar Face” published by
Charter Books. Paperback $4.95.
By JEFF RUTHERFORD
Entertainment Writer
Edna Buchanan is in love with
Miami.
She’s covered the crime beat for
the Miami Herald for 16 years and
in ‘The Corpse Had a Familiar
Face” Buchanan tells her story.
Buchanan has seen Miami
transform from a sleepy Southern
paradise to a thriving metropolis of
murder and drugs. Buchanan’s
coverage of over 5,000 murders has
charted these vital changes in
south Florida.
Buchanan recalls that
Miami police routinely
make jokes about
getting all the
information about a
crime.
Through Buchanan’s detailed
book the reader gets an eye
opening view of city crime.
‘The first homicide victim I ever
wrote about was 67 years old and
from New Jersey, a retired dealer
in religious books. Somebody beat
him to death with a strange object
resembling an elephant-sized Q-
Tip. The killer dropped the
weapon. Police found it, but they
could never figure out what it was,
much less who used it.”
Instead of focusing on one dra
matic crime like most crime books,
The Corpse Had A Familiar Face”
covers a wide range of crimes that
Buchanan has covered. The book
gives an accurate portrait of a re
porter’s life and times while cov
ering the police beat at a large
metropolitan newspaper.
Bucnanan admits that she’s shy
off the job, but once a story starts
brewing nothing can stop her. Her
tenacity permeates throughout the
book and creates passages of pow
erful human drama. Buchanan
also writes about her struggles and
triumphs in a field that was male-
dominated when she started.
BOOK REVIEW
The persistent focus that runs
throughout the book is Buchanan’s
obsession with the truth. Bu
chanan recalls that Miami police
routinely make jokes about getting
all the information about a crime.
If they don’t, Edna will. This obses
sion with facts and truth has re
sulted in Buchanan writing many
shocking stories throughout her ca
reer.
These stories run the gamut.
One example includes the story of
the Vietnam veteran confined to a
wheelchair killed in a hit and run
accident. Documents in the vic
tim’s pockets showed that he’d
been ejected from a VA hospital
that day and he’d been refused
transportation back to his home in
Key West, Fla. by a variety of go-
verment agencies.
“Finally exasperated by all the
bureaucratic red tape, the feisty
vet tried to make it back to Key
West alone. He covered about
seven (miles) when a college kid in
a Corvette killed him. He had 149
to go.”
Buchanan’s coverage of police
brutality against a black motor
cyclist in 1979 exposed a brutal
murder perpetrated by the men
sworn to protect. The officers were
acquitted in a 1980 trial and the
black neighborhoods of Miami
were rocked by violent riots. Many
accused Buchanan of stirring up
trouble, but she details her cov
erage of the crime and the results
in The Corpse.”
This book is of interest to both
journalism students and the gen
eral public. It’s an accurate por
trayal of the diverse and bizarre
crimes committed in a large city
and the coverage of those crimes.

First there was the “White

great songs like “Revolution
Number Nine,” “Back in the
U.S.S.R.” and “Piggies."
Next there was the “Black

Now there is the “Green
Album" by the Disney people.
For those who haven’t been
subjected to incessant nostalgia
by “baby boomers,” Gumby
made his debut 30 years ago on
the “Howdy Doody Show.”
The “Green Album,"
according to the media release,
is the first album of popular
music ever released about

When the most successful
artists featured are Dweezil and
Moon Unit Zappa and Frank Si
natra Jr. one should listen with
care. The Sinatra selection is
the only redeeming song on the
disc, because it’s the original re
cording of the Gumby theme
song. "Bein’ green can really be
keen, especially when you’re
blue. If you’ve got a heart then
Gumby’s a part of you."
Some of the most forgettable
songs are: “Zydeco Gumby Ya
Ya,” that doesn’t sound any
thing like real Zydeco music,
“Concrete and Clay” and “Po
key’s Polka.”
The collection is a variety of
styles: speed metal, Zydeco, psy-
chedelia-Beatles rip-off and
basic pop fluff. Buena Vista
should have worked on quality
of style instead of quantity.
While the music is varied, it

If you’re buying this because
it’s green, it’s a good choice.
Otherwise, save your money.
