Georgia Museum to end valuable Kress Collection exhibit
By INGRID REEVES
Contributing Writer
The Georgia Museum of Art will
end its exhibition of a rich collec
tion of Italian Renaissance paint
ings Sunday.
These paintings bv Italian Re
naissance masters of the 14th to
17th centuries are representatives
of the Kress Study Collection. This
collection of Renaissance art was
offered to selected colleges and uni
versities across the United States
as an aid to students in the study of
art history.
In 1961, the Georgia Museum of
Art chose a group of paintings
which consisted of 12 selected
works from the Kress Study Collec
tion. These works of art were do
nated to the University by the
trustees of the Samuel H. Kress
Foundation.
Chief administrative officer of
the Samuel H. Kress Foundation in
New York, Lisa Ackerman said the
study collection was distributed to
colleges and universities that are
committed to the humanities.
‘The donations of art were in
tended to incorporate actual works
of art into the actual study of art
history," she said.
The exhibition has been well-at
tended by both University students
and the community, William Ei-
land, director of public relations
and publications of the Georgia
Museum of Art, said.
Many high school students have
been exposed to the paintings of
the Kress Study Collection while
visiting the museum during the
11th Annual High School Art Sym
posium, Eiland said.
Some University art classes
have visited the museum to ob
serve the paintings. Arthur Rosen
baum, professor of drawing and
painting, said that his painting

materials and techniques class ob
served the paintings in order to
learn the traditional techniaues of
the early period. One period style
included the egg tempora tech
nique displayed in many of the
paintings of the Renaissance pe
riod. Rosenbaum said he takes his
class to view the paintings every
year.
Beth Croce, a senior scientific il
lustration major, said the display
is interesting from a cultural and
historical point of view as well as
an artistic one.
"Anyone who’s taken an art his
tory course is going to appreciate
the difference between seeing
something like this live rather
than in a book or on a slide,” she
said.
Carolyn Woods, professor of art,
had a class which prepared the
print exhibition for the Kress
Study Collection.
The paintings of the Kress Study
Collection haven’t been displayed
for a couple of years. However,
they’re always available to anyone
for study, according to the Georgia
Museum.
Students of art have benefitted
from the efforts of Samuel H.
Kress, a collector of Italian Renais
sance art who wanted to broaden
the cultural awareness of his
country.
