TGIF
Weekend ignites with tunes from Bees, Jets and Toys
Tremors: Another flick with scary creatures that will
keep you up at night, instead of doing your homework
MOVIES ON CAMPUS
• Jan. 19-20 : Sex, Lies and
Videotape. Last year’s critical
favorite is worth seeing in spite of
that. James Spader and Andie
MacDowell star in a look at
impotence, adultery and
dishonesty.
• Midnighter: Home of the Brave.
• Jan. 21 : The Cabinet of Dr.
Caligari/Nosferatu. A classic horror
film duet.
• Jan. 23 : Star Wars. Need words
be said about this classic
adventure movie? The writing may
be a bit hokey at times, but it still
has the same energy and
excitement that made it one of the
most popular films of all time
• Jan. 24 : The Empire Strikes Back.
The best of the science fiction
trilogy. The writing was top-notch,
the thrills non-stop, and ol* Darth
was never more evil.
MOVIES IN TOWN
ALPS
• Fabulous Baker Boys . One of last
year’s best flicks starred the
Bridges’ brothers (Beau and Jeff)
as piano-playing lounge singers in
need of some excitement for their
act. They get more than they
bargain for when they hire the
unbelievably hot Michele Pfeiffer
as a singer. Yes, she sings too! We
are then treated to a wonderfully
bittersweet romantic comedy
featuring excellent performances
by all involved.
CLASSIC TRIPLE
• Steel Magnolias . A paean to
sisterhood. According to rumor, it’s
an enjoyable tear-jerker with some
great performances.
• Glory. A valid complaint of
African-Americans is that society
has attempted to deny them their
history. Glory attempts to redress
that with this account of the 54th
Regiment, an all African-American
volunteer unit during the Civil
War. This unit, made up of both ex
slaves and free blacks, faced
overwhelming odds just to get to
fight. Word is this will be a big
Oscar contender. Stars Morgan
Freeman, Denzel Washington and
Matthew Broderick.
• Stepfather II.
AFTER HOURS
GEORGIA SQUARE
• Little Mermaid. One of the best
movies of the year. Ariel is a
mermaid who falls in love with an
earthbound prince. It’s upbeat,
hilarious, constantly entertaining
as well as romantic. Music written
by the creators of Little Shop of
Horrors make this one of the best
musicals in Disney history.
• Harlem Nights . O.K, so every
critic in America except me hated
this film. They’re all wrong! Well,
not totally. This is Eddie Murphy's
first directing effort. While, as
another critic said, he’s no
Stallone, he produces an
entertaining, if lightweight,
gangster period flick. It’s filled
with obscenities. It’s sexist and
shallow, but if you like Eddie
Murphy’s comic routines, you’ll
enjoy this film. Features a rather
nice performance by Richard Pryor
as well.
• National Lampoon's Christmas
Vacation. The Griswold’s yuck it up
again.
• Downtown. Anthony Edwards
and Forest Whitaker star as cops
in this film directed by Richard
Benjamin.
• Back To The Future II.
• War of the Roses. Michael
Douglas and Kathleen Turner are
a couple undergoing a divorce that
is everything but amicable. Danny
DeVito’s direction is wonderfully
bizarre, and this story pulls no
punches. All I can say is, don’t
expect a happy ending.
• Always. Steven Speilberg’s latest
effort (heroic forest fire fighters)
fails to catch fire due to a lousy
script. It does, however, offer a nice
debut by Brad Johnson.
• Internal Affairs. Andy Garcia and
Richard Gere play the ultimate
good cop/bad cop game when
Garcia must investigate popular,
but dirty cop Gere.
• Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw
Massacre III I’m trying really hard
to think of something the world
needs less than another chainsaw
movie. Hmmmmm. Nothing comes
to mind
LEFONT BEECHWOOD
• Look Who's Talking.
• Blaze. Paul Newman is
controversial Louisiana governor
Earl Long. Long’s career is in
jeopardy, when he falls for a
celebrated stripper, the infamous
Blaze Starr.
• Tango and Cash. Lame attempt to
rip off “Lethal Weapon 2.”
• Tremors. Kevin Bacon and Fred
Ward star in a movie set in
Perfection, Texas. Underground
beasties have come aTcnocking and
only a few have the guts to face
them down. This may, I repeat
may, be more than just a simple
horror movie, so saith the
grapevine.
• Born On The Fourth Of July. Oliver
Stone brings Ron Kovic’s story to
the big screen. Tom Cruise stars as
Kovic, a gung-ho youth who goes to
Vietnam. He is crippled there and
begins to question the war, ending
up as an anti-war protestor. This is
another film about which people
are talking Oscar. That or
grapevine speaks of Best Picture,
Best Director, and yes it’s true,
Best Actor for the recently
separated Cruiseman.
