Tonight, the Georgia men’s bas
ketball team takes its winless SEC
road show to Baton Rouge to face
the 16th-ranked LSU Tigers.
LSU is 12-3 overall and 4-2 in
the conference. Georgia, losers Sat
urday to Ole Miss, is only a game
behind at 3-3.
The Bengals feature a pair of
seven footers which could hinder
the Dogs' inside game. Forward
Stanley Roberts, 7’0” 280 pounds,
and center Shaquille O’Neal, 7’1”
272 pounds, have a combined av
erage of 30.9 points and 22.7 re
bounds per game.
“They’re tough,” said Alec
Kessler. “We aren’t going to be able
to outmuscle them. We will have to
use our strength, which is good
shooting."
The Tigers’ top gun is All-Amer
ican guard Chris Jackson. He is av
eraging 27.2 points per game.
LSU’s head coacn Dale Brown
isn’t taking Georgia lightly. Al
though he realizes he has a lot of
talent on this year’s team, he
knows that the SEC is more bal
anced than most experts expected.
“Georgia is one of my favorite
teams,” said coach Brown. “They
have Alec Kessler and Litterial
Green and those two could play for
any team in the country."
The Dogs one-two scoring combi
nation of Kessler and Green will
need ample help from their sup
porting cast if they are to have an
upset chance in Bayou country.
Green has had some of his best
ames against old friend Chris
ackson. Their rivalry dates back
to high school in Mississippi where
Green played in Moss Point and
Jackson played in Gulfport.
Green has outscored Jackson in
previous meetings but Jackson’s
teams have recorded the victories.
Last season, Green notched 32
points at home and 29 points on
the road against LSU, but the Ti
gers won both games including an
80-79 come-from-behind victory
here in Athens with Jackson
scoring 23 points.
“1 don’t care if I score any points
as long as my team wins. Green
said. *The team comes first.”
LSU, after beating Notre Dame
Saturday in New Orleans, lost to
Alabama Sunday in Tuscaloosa.
“We’re going to see a different
team than what Alabama saw,”
said Hugh Durham. “We’re going
to see a team that’s emotionally
fired up.”

Two years afler guards Chris
Jackson and Litterial Green left
the “Golden Gulf Coast" to play col
lege basketball, people in their
hometowns say the debate still lin
gers and may never be resolved ...
Who’s the best?
Tonight’s game between LSU
and Georgia adds fuel to the fire.
Since the two started college,
LSU’s Jackson, who led the Gulf
port Admirals against Green’s
Moss Point Tigers, has piled up
better scoring statistics. But what
do stats prove? The real experts re
main in coastal Mississippi and
have seen the two play more than
any statistician.
“I think Jackson is better be
cause he’s faster,” said Joseph Wil
liams, bagger at Gulfport Kroger
food store. "But I like 'em both.”
Moss Point Winn Dixie manager
Jerry Rankin thinks Williams is
crazy and better go back to cost
cutting. “Each player has his own
assets but I’d have to say Green is
better because he’s from Moss
Point," Rankin said. Adds Linda
Smith, manager of the Moss Point
Popeye’s Chicken, “I like Litterial
better because he’s the homebov.”
But, this isn’t the opinion of all
Popeye’s: “There’s no doubt about
it, Chris is a better player,” said
James Patton, manager of the
Gulfport store.
And, geographical bias isn’t
prevalent everywhere: “I think
Chris is the better all-around
player right now,” said Clint Stan
dard, an electrical engineer at In
ternational Paper Mill in Moss
Point. “Chris had players on his
team that helped nim become a
great player, help him learn to
pass and develop the total game.
Litterial had to do it all himself.
“As NBA prospects though, I
think Litterial will prove to be the
best. Hell have better tools.”
Gulfport High School head bas
ketball coach Gerald Austin, who
was an assistant when Jackson
played there, said the two are
equally capable.
“I thinK they’re both great
players,” Austin said. “In high
school Green was more of a motiva
tional team leader while Chris was
a quiet leader. I wouldn’t say one is
better than the other. They each
had their own style. They're prob
ably the most famous people in

Some people said that the two’s
basketball skills are equal but they
like one player more than other.
"Of course Fm a little prejudiced,
but I think Green is better," said
Richard Niles, an assistant prin
cipal at Moss Point High Scnool.
“He’s just a great guy. He grad
uated with honors and was a well-
liked student leader. And he’s a fa
ther figure, a good role model,
someone I’d like my eighth-grade
son to model himself after "
The question of who’s the best
may never be settled, but people in
southern Mississippi sure do like
talking about it.
