The third-ranked (5-0) Georgia gymnastics
team’s motivation this week isn’t some math
ematical computation, just pure revenge.
The Lady Dogs tonight visit Arizona for a
quadrangular meet against three of last year’s
lop 12 finishers — the California-State-Ful-
lerton Titans, Oregon State Beavers and the
hometown Wildcats.
Cal State finished sixth last year and is pres
ently ranked fourth. Oregon State finished last
season at the No. 7 spot and this season is tied
for sixth with LSU. Arizona finished at No. 11
last season but is unranked this year.
The Titans, paced by three-time All-Amer
ican Li3a Dolan, laid lame the Lady Dogs twice
last season — first at the UCLA Invitational
and later here in the Coliseum.
‘They beat us twice last year and now we
want to return the favor,” Georgia head coach
Suzanne Yoculan said. “It’s a good meet to zero
in on, watch each of Cal State’s routines, then
do one better.”
Entering the third meet of the season, the
Gym Dogs will be turning up their intensity
and the difficulty level of their routines.
The physically abusive nature of the sport
prevents teams from attempting its highest dif
ficulty level early in the season. Most coaches
have their charges start the season with rou
tines they’re fully capable of hitting, then in
crease difficulty to achieve higher scores with
more daring routines.
On the floor exercise in particular, two Gym
Dogs will throw new moves. Sophomore Chris
Rodis will add a second double-back (a leap
with two complete backward flips) on her
second of the three tumbling passes.
Sophomore Julie Ponstein will upgrade the
value of her routine from a9.8toal0by doing
a one-and-a-half twist, punch front (running di
agonally across the floor, leaping into a 1 1/4
twist in the air, landing, and without stepping,
sommersaulting forward into the direction of
the leap).
“It’s time to start making the changes and
taking the chances,” Yoculan said. “If we can
work in all our difficulty and keep everybody
healthy, I don’t think there’s anybody in the
country that can beat us.”
Georgia presently has one injury. Freshman
all-arounder Sandy Rowlette is out 7-10 days
with a btrained ligament in her sternum.
Leading the Dogs again this week will be se
nior Corrinne Wright and freshman Jennifer
Carbone, Georgia’s one-two punch in the all-
around. They are presently the nation’s sixth
and seventh ranked all-arounders, respec
tively.
While Georgia looks to increase difficulty
and score, Oregon State, fresh off an upset of a
stumbling UCLA team, will be looking simply
to survive the meet.
The Beavers have this season lost to injury
three starters, two scholarship athletes and a
walk-on. Coach Jim Turpin is left with only
eight people on his team, one of whom is a
cheerleader who does some vaulting.
"Each time a girl goes down, a shadow is cast
across the gym,” Turpin said in a telephone in
terview. "But each time the team bounces back
and I’m real proud of them for that.
Dogs face showdown with No. 1 Vols

After knocking a huge monkey
off their backs by whipping the
LSU Tigers Wednesday night in
Baton Rouge and getting their first
SEC road win, the Georgia men’s
basketball team sets its sights on
the first place Tennessee Volun
teers tomorrow night in Athens.
With very few resources, the
Dogs pulled off an amazing upset
over LSU. With Litterial Green in
Athens nursing an infected hip, the
Bulldogs needed a miracle.
They got one. With four seconds
remaining, Rod Cole, who finished
with a career-high 19 points, was
fouled attempting a three-point
shot and he was entitled to three
free throws.
Cole, a 78 percent foul shooter,
ignored the pressure and hit all
three to propel the Dogs into over
time. The Dogs went on to win 94-
92.
It was total team effort. Mike
Harron, who normally enters in
the latter stages of most games, en
tered in the first half to give the
starters a rest and a lift.
Jody Patton, who replaced-
Green, scored 19 points, including
four clutch three pointers. Patton
has been on a tear of late, making
14 of his last 22 three-point at
tempts over the last five games for
a lofty 63.6 percent. Shaun Golden
frustrated Chris Jackson down the
stretch by forcing bad shots and
turnovers.
The starters also contributed.
Alec Kessler finished with 27
lints and nine rebounds. Forward
arshall Wilson tied his career
high with 22 points while Neville
Austin played inspired defense and
scored six points and snagged eight
rebounds.
Coach Durham had nothing but
praise for his team, especially the
reserves.
"The guys believed,” said
poi
Mt
Durham. "Some of the guys who
haven’t had a lot of playing time,
came in a pressure situation and
contributed.”
Georgia now returns home,
where they are unbeaten this
season. The Vols are atop the SEC
after beating Alabama this past
Tuesday night.
The Volunteers are led by
guards Allan Houston, who aver
ages 16 points a game, and Greg
Bell, who can light up the three-
point perimeter, and averages 17.4
points a game.
‘They are on top of it all,” said
Coach Durham. “Coach Houston is
in his first year and he’s done a
fantastic job.”
The Dogs are in the drivers’ seat
if they can get past Tennessee Sat
urday. They are 4-3 in the confer
ence and only one game behind the

The Dogs are still hurting.
Green, who has averaged over 20
points in SEC action this year, is
questionable. The Dogs will need
another valiant effort from the en
tire team to have a chance to win.
The Dogs will also have the
luxury of a sixth man, the home
crowd. There are plenty of tickets
available and the world-famous
San Diego Chicken will be per
forming his (or is it her?) outra
geous anticB.
After Tennessee, Georgia’s SEC
schedule continues to heat up. The
Bulldogs host Auburn in the Col
iseum on Jan. 31 and then visit the
Kentucky Wildcats Feb. 3.

(Ed. Note: Guard Rod Cole's
clutch sinking of three free throws
with four seconds remaining in
the game pushed Durham's Dogs
to a major upset over LSU
Wednesday night. The R&B
caught up with Cole before prac
tice Thursday.)
R&B: LSU built a sizeable lead
early, yet you didn’t let the Tigers
run away with it. How did you do
it?
Cole: They had all the pres
sure on them to blow us
out.We knew they’d try to ex
plode on us to get the
blowout, and we could capi
talize on the mistakes they'd
make. We just kept plucking
away.
R&B: Late second half and
you’re down by three. Ten sec
onds, nine seconds, tell me what
you're thinking.
Cole: I knew the clock was
running down and that we
had to have a three. We had to
get the shot off from behind
the line.
You get the ball. Eight seconds,
seven seconds ...
Cole: I’ve got the ball. I spot
up and jump to shoot the
three-pointer. I see two LSU
guys go up with me so I
leaned into them, got the shot
off and got hacked in the arm.
R&B: Once you heard the
whistle, were you thinking, 'This
is my game.?’
Cole: Not at first. I was un
certain about the call.Were
the refs going to give me the
three free throws? Then I saw
I had three. I knew I could
make them.
R&B: You’re going to the line
having to sink all three. If you do,
you send the game into overtime
and have a chance to pull off the
upset. What was it like1
Cole: I really had to calm
myself down. I knew my
adrenaline could force my
free throws long. They called
timeout to try to freeze me.
That actually helped me by
giving me time to calm down.
Did the crowd or the LSU
players bother you ?
Cole: I didn't see anything.
I didn’t hear anything. I pre
tended like I was at practice,
in the gym by myself - no pres
sure.
After you hit the third to tie the
game, did know you would win it?
Cole: No. There were four
seconds left. I had to get back
on D' because with Chris
Jackson on the floor.
