Wright suspended from play

The Georgia gymnastics team is
in trouble.
Senior All-American Corrinne
Wright has been benched for Sun
day’s 2:30 p.m. contest against
Ohio State as the Lady Dogs try to
recover from a fall-feat of a West
Coast road trip.
Georgia coach Suzanne Yoculnn
said late Thursday afternoon that
the coaching staff is benching
Whght because she has exhibited a
selfish attitude that has weakened
team morale.
“Her practice attitude has been
self-destructive and detrimental to
the forward progress of the team,”
Yoculan said at practice. "I’m very
disappointed that we had to take
these actions as Corrinne is a se
nior and knows what it takes to be
a success, and knows what the
Georgia program stands for. Her
vision has been cloudy."
Wright, who was once benched
during her freshman year, had no
comment on the suspension.
Yoculnn said that Wright’s ab
sence from the lineup means that

her charges must prove Sunday
that they’re not a one-horse show.
‘This meet is going to set a stan
dard about the long-term future of
this team," Yoculan said. ‘The girls
are going to have to pick up the
sluck for Corrinne’s abscence.
We’ve been stating that we have a
lot of depth. Now we hove to prove
it."
Georgia must now regroup from
its West Const roadtrip, where it
narrowly won meets at Arizona
and BYU because of multiple falls.
The Lady Dogs fell nearly a dozen
times.
A lack of practice during travel
attributed to those falls and the
team has only a total of three days
to prepare for Ohio State.
Several Gym Dogs expressed
confidence that the team’s depth
will compensate for Wright’s ab
sence and that they will stick their
routines Sunday.
T think we’re capable of scoring
as highly without Corrinne,” said
senior Andrea Thomas. “We’ve got
three great freshman all-
arounders and we’re are pretty
solid on all events.”
Sophomore Sophia Royce said
she too thinks Georgia will pull to
gether.
“(Wright’s absence) shouldn’t

said. “We must accept it and keep
going. We have no choice. We’ve
got o lot of talent and if we do in
the meet what we do in practice,
well be fine."
Freshmen Jennifer Carbone and
Heather Stepp will go all-around
against Ohio State. Freshman
Sandy Rowlette returns to the
lineup and may go all-around also.
She is expected to compete three
events and may go all-around as
well.

The second-ranked Georgia
men’s tennis team (2-0) hosts N.C.
S'ate Saturday at the Undsey
Hopkins Indoor Center at 11:00
a.m. in its home opener. The match
will be played indoors in prepara
tion for Georgia's upcoming Na
tional Indoor Team Championship
in Louisville, Feb. 22-25.
“N.C. State has had some very
good teams in the past,” Georgia
coach Manuel Diaz said. “The/1!
bring a good, deep squad to
Athens.”
The Wolfpack’s moet prominent
tennis alumni is John Sadri, a
former quarterfinalist at Wimb
ledon and top-twenty professional.
This season, N.C. State is led by
Glen Philip, a native of New South
Wales, Australia, who will play No,
1 for the Wolfpack. Sophomores
Mike Herb and James Catenis will
play at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, re
spectively. The Wolfpack’s fourth
through sixth positions are uncer
tain.
The home opener will be the first
glimpse Georgia tennis fans will
have of the Bulldog's new
freshmnn Patricio Arnold. Arnold,
a native of Buenos Aires, Argen
tina, came to Diaz’s Dogs from the
Bollettieri Tennis Academy this
winter.
“Patricio is certainly a gifted
tennis player,” Georgia assistant
coach Nick Stutsman said. “He’s
super from the baseline but he’s
learning and wanting to learn to
attack more and become a good vol-
leyer.”
Arnold, who was the 9th-ronked
junior player in the world in 1988,
defeated Andy Zurcher of Notre
Dame 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 in his first
match as a Bulldog at No. 5 sin-
