7 Simons survives changes

The new line-up of Seven Simons will rock Georgia Theatre tonight. Jody Grind opens
The Seven Simone will be performing at the Georgia
Theatre tonight. The Jody Grind will open the show.
Tickets will be $3.
Before heading to the South by Southwest Music
Conference in Austin, Texas, Seven Simons will rock
the Georgia Theatre with opening band, The Jody
Grind.
Since their beginning four years ago, Seven Simons
has seen many changes in their lineup and their
music. The two original members, vocalist Nat Webb
and guitarist Keith Joyner, are now joined by John
Gusty on bass and Travis McNabb on drums. The
group believes the changes have had a positive effect
on them.
‘It is usually detrimental for a bund to change
members, but it wasn’t detrimental looking for people
with our own musical interests. We have a new out
look and a new band,” Joyner said.
McNabb added that the band members’ compatibi
lity enables them to be open to each others musical

tastes.
“Everyone has a good personal relationship," he
said. “We don’t always have the same thing in mind
musically, but the fuct that we like what each other
does makes things work.”
With the additions of Gusty and McNabb, the
band’s style has changed somewhat, and their sound
is not as pop-oriented as the songs on “Clockwork,”
their first release on the Athens-bused Dog Gone re
cords, Joyner said.
‘There is more drive and enthusiasm in the music
now. Our songs are more structured, and they seem to
flow more easily," he said, ‘They have more of a
groove and are more exciting to listen to.”
“Our songs are more mature. They’re not as mains-
treum as the first album,” Gusty added. “They are
growing and becoming a little bit deeper.”
Not claiming any particular influences, the band
strives for originality when writing their songs.
“Everything you listen to influences you, but to try
and list a few model bands would be impossible. In
creating, you use part of yourself and everything
you’ve ever heard as an influence,” McNabb said.
Atlantic Records has expressed interest in Seven
Simons, and they just finished a recording a demo for
the company in John Keane’s studio with producer
Scott Litt, who has worked with both REM and Indigo
Girls.
Joyner said he was pleased with the demo and en
joyed working with Litt.
‘The good thing about Scott Litt was that he got the
best performance out of us. It was a different ap
proach to recording than we were used to, and I think
it came out sounding really well,” Joyner said.
