Lumpkin passes
Legendary Georgia Lineman Quinton
Lumpkin died early Monday from a long-time
illness. Lumpkin was a Georgia football let-
terman in 1936, ’37, and ’38 and was the
team captain his senior year. “Our sympathy
goes out to his family,” Athletic Director
Vince Dooley said. “He left a lasting impres
sion on many people.” Lumpkin was also an
assistant coach to Wally Butts from 1939-
1960.

Swimmer stars
Freshman swimmer, Paige Wilson received
the Bill Young Award for excellence in at-
letics, sportsmanship, scholastics, and extra
curricular activities in an Atlanta ceremony
Saturday evening. The award honors one
swimmer, male or female, from Georgia and
is the one of the highest honors a swimmer
from the state can earn. “I had no idea I had a
chance. I was really excited and got a
standing ovation at the ceremony.” Wilson
said. Wilson is the third University of
Georgia student to receive the award. Karen
-Hill won the honor in 1986 as did Virginia
Jiiedrich in 1982.

Sunday, Feb. 11 from 6 to 7 pm and
Wednesday evening from 8 to 9. Anyone in

and should be ready to swim. Call Rec Sports

A personal guide to gymnast scoring:
Telling a ‘splat’ from a ‘God Almighty’
People often ask me, self-proclaimed “El
Hombre’ of women's gymnastics reporting,
what in the hell is the deal with scoring? To
help you understand what’s going on in the Col
iseum the next time you’re watching the Lady
Dogs annihilate some poor Blob, I give you the
following offering of love.
First, let's talk team scoring.
There are four events — vault, uneven bars,
balance beam, and floor exercise. At least two
judges must evaluate an athlete’s performance.
Six gymnasts per school compete on each event.
The five highest scores are counted. If one ath
lete falls and breaks her leg, the team can step
over her wounded body and may still be okay if
the remaining women do extremely well.
Everybody knows the highest score a gym
nast can get is a 10, so you earn up to 50 points
per apparatus. (That’s 200 for the rest of us
journalism majors out there.) Most serious
teams score in the 185-195 range. Alabama
presently owns the highest score in collegiate
history with a 194 and change.
If a team beats someone by three points, it’s
considered a bashing. Think about it this way:
Most people understand football scores. To
figure out how badly somebody got whipped,
change the number of tenths in gymnastics to
full points in football. If a Lady Dogs win by two
points (20 tenths) were translated to a football
score, Georgia would’ve won by 20 points — a
solid football victory.
Last season, Georgia beat UCLA at nationals
by .05, not even one full tenth. In football, that
equates to a difference of a missed extra point.
Secondly, let’s look at scoring for the indi
vidual athlete. It’s not as confusing as it looks, I
promise.
Routines consist of what are called value
parts. A gymnast must combine a certain
number of them, divided by difficulty into ‘A’,
‘B’, V and D’ moves — ‘A’ being the easiest. A
really tough routine equals roughly a number
that would put you on academic probation. And
if you tried some of those moves, you’d likely be
hospitalized as well.
Chris
Lancette
Not all routines are worth a 10.0. If a gym
nast has only the minimum value parts, the
best she can do is a 9.6. She gets the chance to
earn up to four additional tenths of bonus
points. What’s a bonus look like? I call it the
“God Almighty Factor." Watch Sandy Row-
lette’s uneven bars performance. When you se
her do this wicked twisting move before
catching the bar with one hand, you'll say to
yourself, “God Almighty.” Whenever you say
that, you’ve probably just witnessed a bonus
move.
So, that total of 10 total points consists of:
Three points for value parts (difficulty), .40 for
bonus, 1.5 for the combination and composition
of the moves, and 5.1 for execution.
Now let’s talk about deductions for execu
tion. When a judges see something wrong, how
much do they take off? I call it the “Splat!
Factor.”
When you see a gymnast crash hard, or at
least fall completely from the apparatus, and
turn to your friend and say, “Splat!” you’ve just
witnessed a .50 deduction. A smaller “Splat!,”
like a gymnast smacking the bars with her feet
or putting her hands down when she lands is a
.30 deduction. A tiny “Splat!,” like a gymnast
stepping out of bounds on the floor exercise is a
.10 deduction. Wobbles can range from a tiny
“Splat!” to a medium “Splat!” There are other
deductions that may occur, but you’re not likely
to see them happen often enough in collegiate
gymnastics to even worry about it.
Let’s now talk briefly about each event, first
the vault.
Deductions are taken in three different areas
— pre-flight (approach to the horse), repulsion
(the rise off the horse), and post-flight (distance
and height from the horse). If you see a vault
that looks like a baseball hit for a line drive or
infield fly, you can figure the vault wasn’t that
good. If the gymnast moved so fast you really
couldn't tell what she did, she’ll probably get a
good score because the judges couldn’t tell ei
ther.
That’s the thing about judging. Since the
judges’ brains are not equipped with the VCR-
quality replay and slow-motion, judging is a
very difficult science. But, after you watch gym
nastics for a while, your eyes learn to slow the
action down for you. Watching Georgia practice
in the Women’s P.E. Building has helped me
immensely. Drop by in the afternoons (prac
tices are usually open to the public) and you can
start your career as an international gymnas
tics judge.
The uneven bars: A gymnast has to put 10-
14 moves in on the bars — big chop sticks that
occasionally carry out personal grudges against
the performer. A gymnast must utilize both
bars with many release moves and must change
directions at least once.
The balance beam: The beam is a 10-foot-
long, four-inch-wide death wish. Gymnasts
have 70-90 seconds to combine the following el
ements: tumbling with and without flight;
strength: and dance (spins, turns, leaps and
body waves). The concept on beam is for a gym
nast to show her stuff and get off the apparatus
before the beam decides to body-slam her. A
Splat! here meanB not only a low score but prob
ably corrective surgery.
The floor exercise: Here, you’ve got it all.
In the 70-90 seconds here, you’ve got music,
dance, and tumbling. A gymnast doing a good
floor routine will give you the appearance she’s
having a party on the floor. She may then sneak
off to an oxygen tank.
Chris Lancette is spending his third season
with the sport and is the best women’s gymnas
tics reporter in the country.
Men’s team swim for best time at LSU

LSU on Saturday, the Georgia
swim team split with a 67-45 vic
tory for the women and a slim 57-
56 defeat for the men.
However, the men did swim

according to Georgia swim coach
Jack Bauerle.
“Both teams gave great perfor
mances, but I’m especially proud of
the men’s times,” Bauerle said.
Two swimmers, junior Sheila
Taormina and senior Peter O’Sul
livan, qualified for the NCAA
championships in the 400 indi
vidual medley (IM) and 200
breaststroke, respectively.
Taormina also set a pool record
in her qualifying race as well as
winning first places in the 500 and
1000 freestyle competitions.
“This gives me confidence,”
Taormina said. “I feel like I’m
really in shape and can score in the
top eight at NCAA. That’s my
goal.”
O’Sullivan, who recently placed
seventh in the English Common
wealth Carnes, won second in his
qualifying event, losing to Todd
Torres, the 1988 SEC 200 Breasts
troke champion.
"Quality wasn’t really our con
cern,” Bauerle said. “It’s just very
unusual to (qualify) during a dual
meet. The swimmers are very
tired.”
The lOth-ranked women and
23rd-ranked men enter into their
last dual-meet of the season
against Alabama on Saturday.
