(Ed Note: Sophomore Caryn
Moss is currently number four in
the women’s collegiate tennis
rankings.)
R&B: You are going into the
season ranked number four in the
nation. Does this put more pres
sure on you as an individual
player?
Moss: No, I don’t think it puts
more pressure on me. The num
ber's right; I should be that high.
At this point, I'm playing as well
as I can piny and I think if you’re
playing well, it's going to reflect
on your ranking. I’m really ex
cited to start the season.
R&B: As a team, Cixich Wal
lace hopes to improve over last
year. With a final team ranking of
number four, an SEC team
championship, and reaching the
semi-finals of the SCAA tourna
ment. hou■ can the team improve?
Moss: First of all, we could’ve
won the National Indoor Team
Championships. We lost a tight
one to Florida (5-4), and then we
lost to UCLA (5-4) in the consel-
lation We lost again to Florida 5-
4 and then at the NCAA tourna
ment we lost to Stanford, which
we could’ve won also. The four
matches that we lost definitely
could’ve been our matches. It was
just a matter of really believing
we could pull off those matches,
and I think this year we can. I
really think we’re going to shoot
for number one. We don’t want to
be number two; we’re not satis
fied with number two.
R&B: With such a talent-laden
team, it seems highly likely that
you will he forced to play your tea
mmates in tournaments as you
did several times last year. How
does it affect your game when
your opponent is someone you
practice with seven days a week?
Moss: I hate it personally. It’s
really hard to get intense
knowing your teammate is on the
other side of the net, yet you
really want to win. On the other
hand, it’s great for a school like
ours to have two players in the
semifinals or finals of a tourna
ment. That says a lot for the
school. There’s a good side to it
but it’s tough. When you’re on the
court, you don’t want to get too
intense or mean, but sometimes
you have to be that way.
R&B: As a Dean's List student,
you obviously do a gixxl job of bal
ancing athletics and academics.
Do you feel that student athletes
here at the university are treated
any differently, better or worse,
than other students?
Moss: I think the school does a
good job with the athletes. I think
the football and basketball teams
Caryn Moss: Currently
4 in women’s tennis
get picked on sometimes. But
there are a lot of non-athletes
who are terrible students too.
The discipline I get from tennis
helps me apply myself to
studying. I wouldn’t be happy if I
didmt get good grades.
R&B: How did you get started
playing tennis?
Moss: My father (Jerry Moss)
was a player. He won the French
and Australian junior tourna
ments. He got me started at
about age 8, but I didn’t start
playing tournaments until I was
11. I love the competition. I
played juniors from age 12 to 17,
and then I played professional
tournaments for a year and a
half.
R&B: Do you have a certain
professional player that you like
to imitate or look up to?
Moss: I think Jimmy Connors
would be my all-time favorite
player.

The Georgia women's basketball
team takes all of the harsh mem
ories from last year’s NCAA
second-round tournament loss
against Clemson to Littlejohn Col
iseum for a Wednesday evening re
match.
“Right now, I really don’t feel
like we are looking at this game
with revenge on our minds,”
Georgia coach Andy Landers said.
“However, as the game progresses,
we may start to remember last
year and play with vengeance.”
Unlike opponents with strong
inside games, such as Kentucky
and Tennessee, Clemson presents
a different problem for Landers
and Company.
Clemson’s strength lies in its
guard play as it features two
guards who have more steals than
personal fouls, mirroring a strong
defensive presence. Freshman
Karry Boyatt, averaging 16.8
points a game, has 49 steals with
only 36 fouls. Sophomore Courtney
Johnson has 52 steals, while being
whistled 43 times.
‘Their defensive pressure defi
nitely has me concerned," Landers
said. “But you can’t forget about
their offense. They have quality
players that we will have to play
tightly.”
Landers’ point seems legitimate
when one realizes that Boyatt is al
ready Clemson’s eighth all-time
leading freshman scorer with 336
points and leads the ACC in three-
point accuracy (50.2 percent).
The Tigers also bring junior
center Jackie Farmer, whose 12.2
points a game effectively comple
ment the team’s outside shooting.
However, Georgia is no stranger
to challenges this year. With the
help of forward Stacey Ford’s SEC-
leading 63.5 percent shooting per
centage and forward Tammye Jen
kins’ 8.2 rebounds a game, the

Sharon Baldwin: Leads Lady Dogs in total assists (73)
Lady Dogs have begun to make a
run at the SEC’s top contenders.
Guard Sharon Baldwin leads the
team in assists with 73.
One glaring aspect of Clemson’s
squad this year is that it returns no
starters from the ’88-’89 team.
“Georgia has one of the best in
side games in the nation,” Clemson
coach Jim Davis said. “With our
team not returning anyone from
last year, it will be a real test for
our players. I really don’t think
last year’s tournament game will
have any bearing on its attitude.”

Davis is in his third year as
Clemson’s women’s basketball
coach and has compiled a 56-25 re
cord.
Fourth-ranked Georgia is 4-2 in
the SEC (19-2 overall) and trails
first-place Auburn by only one
game.
In addition, several Georgia
players have had career bests
against Clemson, including:
4 Ford’s career-high rebounding
total, 10, against Clemson on Jan
uary 16 of lost year.
4 Guard Kim Berry’s career-
high of four steals, January 16 of
last year.
4 Center Sherelle Warren’s ca
reer-high of three blocked shots,
February 13,1988.
However, Landers is quite
aware that the past means little to
the task at hand.
“We have great respect for
Clemson,” he said. ‘They have al
ready knocked off Maryland twice
this year and we can’t think about
what has happened before.”
Georgin lends the overall series
with the Tigers 6-4.
