Ed. Note: After Georgia’s
Tuesday night 70-65 thrilling vie-
tory over the Florida Gators in
front of a nutional television audi
ence, sports writer David Pace
caught up with coach Hugh
Durham to discuss the victory and
the outlook for the Dogs as the race
for the SEC crown heats up.
R&B: You're team had a tough
time against Florida and last week
against Auburn. Do you feel there
has been o letdown or are these
teams playing the Dogs tougher
when they come in here?
Durham: The teams playing us
are playing tough. No doubt about
it. We are at the top of the league
and the teams we are competing
against are gunning to knock us
off. Florida has lost their top two
players, but since then, they
played LSU tough and Alabama
tough and now us.
R&B: As evidenced by the Au
burn and Florida games, there are
really no easy games in the SEC.
What’s the outlook for the rest of the
season ?
Durham: Well, Alabama is next
and it is a critical game. We’re
right now only one game out of first
place and Alabama is in front of us.
I think for us to have a shot at the
* conference we must win all of our
home games. The Alabama game is
a must-win and then well go on to
the next one.
R&B: Has this year's sauad
played up to it's potential and are
you pleased with the effort t
Durham: I’m pleased with the ef
fort. I’ve said all year that this is
the best group of guys to work
with. I think that we’re capable of
playing with anybody on our
schedule and if we win a game, it
doesn’t surprise me.
R&B: Are you pleased with the
way Seville Austin has played this
season 1
Durham: Neville made a deci
sion at the end of spring quarter
last year that he wanted to be a
contributor. He dedicated himself
to getting stronger over the
summer and he has played well
this year. I’m happy for him.
R&B: Your top three reserves,
Jody Patton, Lem Howard, and
Shaun Golden, have played a vital
role in your game plan. Are you
pleased with their performances?
Durham: We talk about Jody
Patton as our sixth starter. He
started for Wilson earlier in the
year when Marshall was hurt and
scored 17 points. He started
against LSU when Litterial Green
was hurt and got 19 points. He
plays good, aggressive detense and
we can count on him. Lem Howard
had started to really come into his
own before he broke his wnst. Now
he’s out there playing with a cast
on his arm and it’s hard. But he’s
doing what he can for the team.
He’s a real team player. Shaun
Golden is getting more minutes
each game and as he gets more
time, he gets better, and grows
more confident.

E0RGIA BULLDOGS

To the Student Body:
Tlila past Tuesday, our basketball team played an important home game
against the Florida Gatore in the Coliseum. It was a game we absolutely
needed to win. If you were at the game, or watched It on TV, you know we
didn't play as well as we would have liked. It Is in games like this
when having the support behind you can really give your team a spark or
help the team get over the hump. An enthusiastic home crowd can make a
big difference in a game. All you have to do is look at the home and
away records in the SEC this season.
I think that Is what happened in the game against Florida. We
needed a boost from our fans and you responded in a Bulldog way. Without
the crowd advantage at the end, I'ai not sure we would have won the game.
I know our players and coaching staff feel the same way. We would like
to thank each and every one of you for your help in our winning effort
Tuesday against the Gators.
We have another big challenge ahead Saturday whan Alabama comes in
for our 4:00 game. This is a crucial game for us. Alabama la tied for
the SEC lead with LSU Just one game ahead of us. We hope all of you who
com out Tuesday night for the Florida game will be in the Coliseum
Saturday to give us your support. It will take a superb effort by our
basketball team to beat an outstanding Alabama team. A great crowd in
the Coliseum would certainly improve our chances to come out a winner.
Thanks again from our players,
support. We'll see you Saturday.

Intramural basketball
top spots maintained
in basketball action
By ROBERT MCDONALD
Sports Writer
Although there ore some
changes in The Red and Black’s
intramural basketball rankings,
all three No. 1 positions are tne
same as last week’s.
The Hell Boys cemented their
claim to the top spot last
Thursday as they blistered
Lambda Chi Alpha III 70-38.
Basketball director Frank
Crumley believes that the Hell
Boys toughest contests are in
front of them.
‘They’ve yet to be tested,”
Crumley said. “They probably
won’t see a tough game until the
later rounds of the tournament.”
Unfortunately for The Boys,
Mike Jones won’t be among the
hell-raisers at their next game.
Jones, momentarily pre
tending to be Michael “Air”
Jordan, broke a league rule by
dunking against Lamda Chi
Alpha.
“Dunking is not allowed at Ste-
geman Hall under any circum
stances because there is no give
to the basketball rims (brea
kaway rims),” Crumley said.
In a league where the threat of
dunking is seldom a problem, the
Moby Boners secured their hold
on the top spot in 5’10” and under
action as they downed last week’s
No. 2 Born to Run 44-35.
‘The Moby Boners are looking
real good,” Crumley said.
In the contest, Bom to Run
was unable to establish an offen
sive attack against the Moby
Boners. Moby’s Brian Cleveland
dominated the boards and made
quick outlet passes to the team’s
sharp-shooting guards.
The loss drops Born to Run to
the fifth spot in this week’s rank
ings.
The Jr. Speedboys pounced on
the Prarie Dogs 75-44, the
Georgia Pride shot down the Sky-
hawks 49-18 and the Kingsmen
won by forfeit to round out action
in the competetive 5’10” and
under league.
‘That league is going to be
competitive all season,” Crumley
said.
There were no changes in the
women’s Takings ns the top three
teams received byes last week.
Fourth-ranked Delta Zeta de
feated Alpha Omega Pi 47-34 and
No. 5 Crush slaughtered the
Killer Lambs 46-30.
The Knights of the Roundball
moved into the men’s top five
with a 62-43 boshing of Nobody.
The Knights take the spot va
cated by PWT who lost 55-52 to
the Hoopmasters.
In other games, the Speedboys
