■ BEST BETTZZ

or better yet, take them to see Camper Var, Beethoven at the
Georgia Theatre. Then swing by the Amnesty International Ben-
efit at the Rockfish.

MOVIES ON CAMPUS
• Feb 9-10: Erik the Viking. Monty
Python Alumnus Terry Jones
directed this comedy about a
pacifist Viking (Tim Robbins). Also
stars John Cleese and Mickey
Rooney.
• Mldnlghter: Beverly Hills Cop.
• Feb 11: Xala.
• Feb 14: Modern Romance.
MOVIES IN TOWN
ALPS
• Sea of Love.
GEORGIA THEATRE
• Feb 9: Spinal Tap. Rob Reiner’s
satirical “rockumentary” seems all
the more biting today. The self-
absorbed, talentless heavy metal
group portrayed here seems
indistinguishable from most of the
groups on MTV today. Still their
total lack of class provides plenty o’
laughs.
• Feb 12: Animal House. (Sports-guy
Randy Walker’s special guest bit).
“What the hell are you supposed to
do on a Friday night you moron.
Toga? Food Fight? Get even with
the Omegas and Dean Wermer?
Buy 10,000 marbles? Re-live the
best college movie ever made but
don’t try and be cool like the Deltas
and sing along to "Louie, Louie.’ ”
CLASSIC TRIPLE
• Steel Magnolias.
• Glory. The best movie of the year.
Denzel Washington and Matthew
Broderick star in this Civil War
story about the first black army
regiment. “Glory” is visually
stunnning and emotionally
staggering. Few films in recent
history have managed to balance
the glory of war with its bitter and
bloody consequences as well as this
film does.
• Hard to Kill. A few years ago an
action/martial arts movie appeared
that, wonder of wonders, wasn’t
slammed by the critics. The film
was the surprisingly good “Above
the Law” and its star, Steven
Seagal, returns in “Hard to Kill.”
Seagal stars as detective Mason
Storm, a cop whose been in a coma
for seven years, after surviving a
hit that killed his wife and family.
Now he wants justice and revenge.
Sounds pretty good.
GEORGIA SQUARE
• Driving Miss Daisy. A masterpiece.
Jessica Tandy is an elderly Jewish
lady living in pre-civil rights
Atlanta. Morgan Freeman is hired
to driver her around after her last
accident. This film features two of
the best performances of the year
in a low key, subtle yet extremely
moving account of a rather odd
relationship. Not a lot happens,
but the film manages to be
continually involving. A truly great
movie, almost as good as - you
guessed it, “Glory" (the best movie
of the year).
• Always.
• Internal Affairs. Larry King likes
this film but hey good
acting taut thriller good
cop/bad cop stars Richard Gere
and Andy Garcia.
■ AFTER HOURS
• Tremors.
• Stella.
• Flashback.
• Heart Condition. Enjoyable, but
forgettable, action flick starring
Bob Hoskins and Denzel
Washington. Hoskins is a racist
cop who received Washinton’s
heart in a transplant. Alas, he gets
Washington’s ghost as well. For a
better movie with Washington, go
see “Glory” (the best movie of the
year).
• Stanley and Iris. Jane Fonda
teaches Robert DeNiro how to read
and in the process, they fall in love.
This is fairly heavy duty casting for
a romantic comedy, and both stars
are coming off flops (Jane’s “Old
Gringo” and Bob’s “We’re No
Angels”), but the previews of this
film looked good.
• Loose Cannons.Winner of the
weirdest casting choice of the
decade (so far). Gene Hackman
plays Mac Stern, a D.C cop who’s
just been transferred to homicide.
He’s partnered with - Dan
Ackroyd? Yep, this Oscar-winning,
veteran actor has been paired with
Ackroyd in this new action comedy.
The hook is that Ackroyd is a
multiple-personality kind of guy.
LEFONT BEECHWOOD
• Look Who’s Talking. This may
beat “Dead Poet’s Society” for
longest continous run in Athens.
However, it’s not as good as “Glory”
(the best movie of the year.)
• Blaze.
• Tango and Cash.
• Born on the Fourth of July. This is
Oliver Stone’s Golden Globe
winning story of Vietnam vet Ron
Kovic. Kovic (effectively played by
Golden Globe-winning, ex-pretty
boy Tom Cruise) was crippled in
the war, and this film shows his
personal odyssey, from gung-ho
marine to anti-war protester. This
could be viewed as a companion
iece to “Platoon," i.e. what
appens when the vets come home.
Once again, Stone forces the
viewer to see the stark, sometimes
almost unendurable, reality of the
Vietnam experience.
•The Little Mermaid. Great Disney
flick about Mermaids.
