Limping Gym Dogs pull through in Alabama; finish second
By CHRIS LANCETTE
Sports Staff Writer
Tulk about coming through under pressure.
The fourth-ranked Georgia gymnastics team (11-1)
limped into Alabama and placed second in the Red
and White Invitational before a crowd of 7,530 on Sat
urday. The Lady Dogs turned in a season-high 47.30
on the balance beam en route to a season-high total
score of 190.85.
The Crimson Tide won the meet with a 191.75 and
the Florida Gators finished third with a 185.65.
“Were very pleased with the performance," Assis
tant Coach Scott Bull said. ‘The most important thing
is that everyone saw this meet as a real turning point
in the season. The team really proved that it’s going
after the national championship.”
Although nine of 12 Gym Dogs hod at least one in
jury going into the meet, they hit 22 of a possible 24
routines and didn’t have to count their two falls. Se
nior Corrinne Wright returned to the lineup after
being benched last week and scored a 38.45 to take
second in the all-around competition. Freshman
Heather Stepp tallied a 38.0 for a third-place finish.
The big team score puts Georgia into the national
championship hunt by giving it an excellent road
score to compute in the National Qualifying Score.

Diamond Dogs split with Dolphins
By ERIC GARBER
Sports Writer
Going up against a Jacksonville
team that it fell to three times last
season, the Georgia baseball team
managed to split two games with
the Dolphins this past weekend.
Georgia won the first game, the
Dogs’ se;ison opener, 10-2 behind
three hits each from center-fielder
McKay Smith and shortstop J.R.
Showalter.
Stopped in the ninth inning be
cause of heavy rain, the gnme con
sisted of three Jacksonville errors.
One came in the first inning when
shortstop Eric Whitford turned a
routine double play into three
Georgia runs when he threw the
ball into left field.
Smith led off the gnme with a
single, followed by freshman left
fielder Ray Suplee’s walk. Sho
walter was then hit by a pitch to
load the bases, setting the scene for
Whitford’s error on the ground ball
from junior first baseman Doug
Rndziewicz.
Georgia junior Dave Flemming
pitched four scoreless innings be
fore he was taken out in the fifth
inning after giving up two hits and
two unearned runs. Senior Mike
Rheban finished the game for the
Diamond Dogs and was credited
with the victory (1-0).
Georgia’s hope of a two-game
sweep ended Sunday as Jackson
ville defeated the Dogs 6-5 in a nip-
and-tuck battle to the end.
“Jacksonville has an out
standing program,” Webber said.
‘They are coming ofT a terrific
year.”
Diamond Dog Doings: Georgia
coach Steve Webber has an
nounced his everyday position
players for the 1990 campaign.
They are: junior first baseman
Doug Radziewicz, who will share
time with senior Brian Jester, se
nior second baseman Joey Alfonso,
senior third baseman Jeff Cooper,
junior shortstop J.R. Showalter,
freshman left fielder Ray Suplee,
senior center fielder McKay Smith,
junior right fielder Bruce Chick,
sophomore catcher Terry Childers,
and freshman DH Tracy Wildes,
who will share time with Jester. As
far as pitchers go, it is safe to say
that Webber will implement n rota
tion that includes Flemming,
Rheban, senior Joe Kelly, and
freshman Stan Payne.
Webber is optimistic that the
new stadium at Foley Field, which
is expected to be finished in March,
will help bring television coverage
to basebnll games.
“Baseball looms in the shadows
of football and basketball at the
college level. I hope ESPN decides
to come out and cover a few
games," Webber said.

season nemesis, and fought through to the season
high. Senior Andrea Thomas had returned to her All-
American performance level, tieing for first on the ap
paratus with a 9.70.
Freshman Jennifer Carbone said the team knew
that it had to hit the beam and worked especially hard
on the apparatus during the week.
Alabama's fans have a reputation for being the
most obnoxious in the country, so Georgia conch Suz
anne Yoculan enlisted booster club members to help
the Lady Dogs prepare.
“We were really psyched up,” Carbone said. “The
fans that travelled to the meet really helped us out.
Also, we had a couple of intersquads last week where
some booster club members came in to cheer and yell
us off the beam.”
The most difficult event behind it, the Gym Dogs
went to the floor exercise on the second rotation.
Sophomore Chris Rodis scored a 9.65 and earned
second place. Thomas added a 9.60. Freshman walk-
on Debbie Still made her first appearance of the
season, carding a 9.25.
On the vault, Wright tied for first with a 9.65 ns the
Gym Dogs finished with a 47.60 on the apparatus.
Georgia finished on the floor, turning in a stellar
48.60. Wright’s 9.80 put her in a tie for first.
Georgia next travels to Florida for a meet with the
Gators on Friday.
Swim Dogs win over, lose to Tide
By LANA BERMAN
Sports Writer
In its last dual meet of the
season, the Georgia women’s
swim team pulled off a 76-64 vic
tory over Alabama, while the
men lost 86-54 to the fourth-
ranked Crimson Tide Saturday
at Stegeman Hall.
The win boosts the 10th-
ranked women to 7-2 overall and
5-2 in the SEC, while the men fall
to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in the SEC.
“I couldn’t be more proud,”
coach Jack Bauerle said. “It’s the
best women’s swim meet in a long
time. It was an incredible finish.”
Georgia held a 69-64 lead en
tering the final race, the 400-
yard freestyle medley. Karla
Mosdell, Sheila Taormina, Malin
Gustavsson, and Paige Wilson
raced the Crimson Tide to the
wall, winning by an arm’s length
with a 3.25.30 NCAA qualifying
time.
Gustavsson and Wilson com
bined for five individual race
wins. Wilson took first in the 200-
yard freestyle and the 100 and
200-yard butterfly, while Gus-
tavsson dominated the 500-yard
freestyle and the 200-yard indi
vidual medley.
Even with impressive three-
win performances by Trevor
Hodges and Peter O’Sullivan,
and two wins by Curt Barnes, the
Crimson Tide proved too pow-
Chandra Haislett: Backstroked to aid Swim Dogs in win
erful for the Bulldogs.
Hodges dominated in the 100,
200 and 500-yard freestyle races,
O’Sullivan won the 100 and 200
breaststroke and the 200-yard in
dividual medley and Barnes took
first in both 100 and 200-yard
backstroke events.
