Enjoy double shot o’ Guthrie at Ga. Theatre this weekend
I—r: Craig Scheffer and Hugh Ross: In Clive Barker's
newest ‘horror epic' with cool-looking monsters
MOVIES ON CAMPUS
• Feb 16-17: The Big Picture.
(Kevan’s Quip) Kevin Bacon ns a
young film school graduate losing
his ideals and innocence as he’s
sucked into the sleaze of Holly wood
commercial filmmaking.
• Midnlghter: Sixteen Candles. The
film that brought us Anthony
Michael Hall and Molly Ringwald.
A good film in spite of that,
however.
• Feb 18: Uttle Vera.
• Feb 21: She's Gotta Have It. Spike
Lee’s first directing effort is an
entertaining, if flawed, sexual
romp about the life and loves of one
Nora Darling.
MOVIES IN TOWN
ALPS
• National Lampoon’s Christmas
Vacation . The third “Vacation"
outing is no longer timely, but it is
still quite entertaining. The
Griswolds spend Christmas at
home with the in-laws, and lots of
bad stufT happens.
GEORGIA THEATRE
• Feb 19: Alice's Restaurant.Go see
this, especially if you see Arlo
Guthrie Saturday night.
CLASSIC TRIPLE
• Steel Magnoilias. Sappy yet
successful story of sisterhood.
(Best Supporting Actress
nomihation: Julia Roberts).
• Glory. The best film of the year,
regardless of what Oscar says, is
the tale of the first black American
army regiment. The film features
brilliant performances in an often-
heartrending portrait of the Civil
War. (Best Supporting Actor
nomination: Denzel
Washington. Also nominated
for: Art Direction,
Cinematography, Film Editing,
Sound.)
• Hard to Kill. A less-than-
overwhelming, hyper-violent
action effort that probably only
Steven Seagal fans will enjoy.
Seagal is a cop, newly recovered
from a seven-year coma, who’s out
to find the people who tried to kill
him.
GEORGIA SQUARE
• Always.
• Tremors. Entertaining story of
subterranean beasties invading a
small Texas town.
• Driving Miss Daisy. A charming,
brilliantly acted story of an elderly
Jewish lady (Jessica Tandy) and a
black chauffeur (Morgan
Freeman). (Best Picture nomi
nation. Also nominated for:
Best Actor: Morgan Freeman,
Best Actress: Jessica Tandy,
Best Supporting Actor: Dan
Ackroyd, Adapted Screenplay,
Art Direction, Costume Design,
Film Editing, Makeup.)
• Stella.'
• Stanley and Iris. Jane Fonda tea
ches fellow worker Robert DeNiro
to read. Low-key romance with two
big names; they could both use a
hit.
• Loose Cannons. Oscar nominee
Dan Ackroyd (God, that’s weird to
see in print) stars as a cop with
multiple personality problems.
Oscar winner Gene Hackman
(that’s a lot easier to see) also stars
in this action-comeoy.
• Night Breed. (Kevan’s guest
novel) Complicated new horror
film from acclaimed author Clive
Barker (who also wrote and
directed the classic “Hellraiser"). It
stars David Cronenberg (that’s
right, the guy who directed ‘The
Fly" and “Dead Ringers”) as a
psychotic psychiatrist whose
patient, Boone (Craig ShefTer), is
wanted for murder. Boone is forced
to hide in the hills with a band of
monsters called the Nightbreed.
The makeup for the various
monsters looks really cool, and
Barker’s writing skill is
undeniable. Billed as a “horror
epic,” this’ll prove if Barker really
is a good director, or if “Hellraiser”
was just a fluke. It'll either be
really good or really stupid.
• Madhouse. Kirstie Alley and
John Laroquette star in this wacky
comedy.
• Revenge. Kevin Costner has the
hots for married babe Madeline
Stowe. Can you blame him? Her
hubby, Anthony Quinn, is very
displeased.
LEFONT BEECHWOOD
• Look Who’s Talking. Still
running
• Bom on the Fourth of July. A
grueling, often graphic look at the
other side of the Vietnam
“conflict," seen through the eyes of
Ron Kovic (Tom Cruise.) (Best
Picture Nomination. Also
nominated for: Best Director:
Oliver Stone, Best Actor: Tom
Cruise, Adapted Screenplay,
Cinematography, Film Editing,
Score, Sound.)
• War of the Roses.
• Courage Mountain.
If you kept track of our Oscar
predictions, you’ll know we scored
a measley 50% (57% if you count
those that were miscategorized).
Sorry.
