Bulldog battle cry is missing in action
The University of Georgia needs some new
cheers for the basketball and football team.
Now, before we begin this piece, a disclaimer.
1 am in no way picking on the cheerleaders, for
they do an excellent job starting cheers and
chants, but the students need to get creative.
The basketball team is fighting for their first
SEC regular-season crown. Provided Georgia
wins tonight aganist Mississippi in the Col
iseum, Georgia will be playing for first place
against the Tigers on national television.
Now do you honestly want millions of folks
around the country thinking, “Damn, didn’t
they just do that cheer a second ago?”
Think about our cheers. “Georgia Bulldogs”
gets a little old after three or four times across
the stadium or the Coliseum. It’s also tough
getting the alumni to chant “Bulldogs” some
times. Maybe they’d prefer to say "Georgia” in
stead. In fact, the cheerleaders even have to
hold up signs that read “Georgia” and “Bull
dogs” so the crowd won’t forget their lines.
Boy, I sure wont people to see that we need
cue cards to remember our state and our
school’s nickname.
Now “Go Dogs, sic 'em, Woof, Woof, Woof,
Woof, Woof* is pretty good. However, it is pri
marily a football thing and although it is fun to
chant at the opening tip-off, it still seems out of
place in the Coliseum.
Duke University has the best cheering sec
tion in the country. They usually come up with
a new gimmick to harass opposing fans each
year. This year, they dress in blue and white
striped shirts and jump up and down behind
the goal when an opposing player attempts a
free throw. For his next shot, the fans rock and
sway in a circle while yelling to project a dis
tracting background on which the shooter has
to focus.
You know the “designated yell" stunt
Georgia students are doing now (the fans “se
lect” a person on the opposing team and moan
each time he touches the ball until he passes it
or shoots)? Duke did it first years ago. Re
member the “Whoosh” cheer the students do
when Georgia sinks a free throw (the fans
stand with their arms above their heads and
when the ball slips through the hoop, they
make a whooshing noise and quickly thrust
their hands down)? Duke did that first years
ago as well.
Florida State has the best chant. The whole
crowd starts singing this “Seminole War
Chant” in perfect rhythm and bending their
right arms in unison.
Why can’t we come up with some type of bar
king chant? Why can’t we come up with a cool
(without being obscene or unruly) cheer which
will cause Dale Brown to flinch and Chris
Jackson to misfire on Sunday?
The best thing Georgia fans ever did at a bas
ketball game was throw toilet paper after the
first basket. However, that tradition was
nipped in the bud two years ago when the
throwing got out of hand.
The Red and Black is sponsoring a doII in
which you can set your creative juices flowing
and develop a cheer which can be used at this
Sunday’s basketball game against LSU. Well,
we can’t give you any money for your talent, but
if you’re a true Bulldog who doesn’t want the
whole world to see us reading cue cards, come
up with a real chant or stunt.
The University of Georgia needs a few good
cheers.
Anyone, anyone?
Diamond Dogs soar 3-1 over Eagles Tuesday
By ERIC GARBER and
CHRIS LANCETTE
Sports Staff Writers
Freshman designated hitter
Tracy Wildes knocked in the game
winning run with a double in the
sixth inning to give the Georgia
baseball team a 3-1 victory over
Georgia Southern Tuesday af
ternoon at Foley Field.
The win improves Georgia’s re
cord to 4-3 and marks the team’s
second win against the Eagles this
season. Bulldog right-hander Mike
Rebhan (2-1) worked six innings
giving up one run and earning the
win.
Wildes, who struck out earlier in
the game on an outside slider from
Southern pitcher Scott Ryder, hit
the same pitch for his game-win
ning hit.
"He (Ryder) struck me out the
first time on a slider away,” Wildes
said. “When I saw the slider in his
hand again, my eyes lit up.”
Left fielder Doug Radziewicz set
up Wildes’ sixth-inning double
with a two-bagger of his own, ex
tending his hitting streak to seven
games.
Georgia scored its first run in
the third inning. Catcher Terry
Childers led off and singled.
Second baseman Joev Alfonso
walked, and one batter later, third
baseman Ray Suplee scored
Childers on a fielder’s choice.
Georgia coach Steve Webber
said that while the team hit suffi
ciently Tuesday, it needs to bat
more consistently.
“Up and down the lineup, we’re
not swinging as well as we should,”
he said. “Pitch selection is not as
good as it should be.”
Georgia Southern’s only run
came in the sixth when catcher Rob
Fitzpatrick hit a solo home run
over the wall in left center.

The Diamond Dogs added an in

when short stop J.R. Showalter
doubled to score Jeff Cooper, who
had substituted for Suplee.
Southern threatened in the
ninth, loading the bases with only
one out before right fielder Todd
Greene bounced into a 4-6-3 double
play.

Last Season: Mississippi won both meetings with the Dogs. 74-
70 in overtime in Athens and 88-79 at Oxford.
Scouting Report: Ole Miss, a dark horse candidate to win the con
ference at the beginning of the season, has had a disappointing
season. The biggest problem for the Rebels has been competing
on the road. The Rebels’ only road victory to date in the confer
ence has been an 8363 triumph over the hapless Florida Gators.
Ole Miss’ Geraid Glass owns a 24.9 points-pergame scoring av
erage. second in the conference this year behind the 29.4 average
of LSU's Chris Jackson. Along with Glass, the Rebels ere led by
forward Joe Harvell and guard Tim Jumper. Marvell averages 11.7
points while Jumper posts 11.3 per game.
The Dogs have won four straight conference games coming into
tonight's matchup. Including two straight wins on the road. This
wili be the first of Georgia's final two home games. The Dogs have
a perfect 160 record at home thus far.
The Dogs have lost four straight games to the Rebels.
