The Georgia men’s tennis team
(4-0) takes on Pepperdine in the
first round of the USTA/ITCA
National Indoor Team
Championships today in Louis
ville, Ky. Georgia is seeded
second behind Stanford in the
recognized, but unofficial,
"Winter NCAA Team Tourna
ment.”
Pepperdine (6-1), ranked 18th
nationally and fresh off an upset
victory Monday over third-
ranked UCLA, defeated 25th-
ranked Kansas 5-1 in Wednes
day’s qualifying round.
“I fear Pepperdine because
they’re back on track after an off
year last year,” Georgia coach
Manuel Diaz said. “They look to
be one of the top teams in the
country this year.”
In 1988, Pepperdine finished
ranked No. 5 in the country but
lost Robbie Weiss, the NCAA sin
gles champion, and No. 2 singles
player Andrew Snznajder to the
pros. Last season, the Waves fin
ished the year ranked No. 17
with a 13-13 record.
"On paper, looking at the rank
ings, Georgia should be heavy fa
vorites against us,” Pepperdine
co-head coach Richard* Gallien
said. “But in reality it’s a toss-up,
a 50-50 match.”
Rather than set his team’s
sights on the later rounds in the
tournament, which the Dogs
have never won, Diaz concen
trates on having the team not
overlook early round opponents.
“In a national tournament like
this one, you don’t want to over
look anybody," Diaz said. "Our
sights are set on playing well and
winning against a tough Pepper
dine team in the first round/
Pepperdine’s top-player is
Rockville, Md. native David
Wells-Roth, who defeated Kan
sas’s llth-ranked John Falbo
Wednesday 6-7 (6-8), 6-1, 6-4.
Wells-Roth, a 1986 American Ju
nior Davis Cup member, holds re
cent wins over Cal-Irvine’s
Trevor Kronemann and UCLA’s
Jason Netter.
‘"Recently David has been
playing very well in winning
some big matches,” Gallien said.
"He’s an attacking baseline
player who should fare well on
the fast courts.”
Wells-Roth takes over a strong
tradition of No. 1 players for Pep
perdine. Before Weiss and Sz-
najder played at No. 1 in their
careers, Brad Gilbert, the current
world’s No. 4 ranked player.
Seeded behind Georgia is
UCLA at No. 3, and LSU at No. 4.
Rounding out the seedings are
South Carolina at No. 5, Cal-Ber-
keley at No. 6, Texas Christian at
No. 7 and Miami at No. 8. The
winner of the event will automat
ically assume the No. 1 position
in the next team poll set to be re
leased March 6th.

Senior first baseman Brian
Jester jacked a three-run homer
over the right-field wall in the
bottom of the fifth inning to key the
Diamond Dogs’ 10-2 ripping of
Georgia Southern Wednesday at
Foley Field.
Georgia starter Tom Zdanowicz,
who represents the fifth Georgia
pitcher this season who has lasted
more than six innings, gave up
both runs while allowing just six
hits through six and two-thirds in
nings to earn the victory — his first
against no losses.
‘Tom got off to a little bit of a
rough start today but he settled
down,” Georgia coach Steve
Webber said. “We are always
pleased when we can get more than
six innings out of a starter. I’m
pleased with his performance.”
Georgia Southern (6-2) jumped
out to an early 1-0 lead in the first
inning when third baseman Chad
Sumner knocked in right fielder
Todd Greene on a bloop single that
evaded the glove of Georgia short
stop J R. Showalter.
The Diamond Dogs (5-3) came
right back in the bottom of the in
ning thanks to an Eagle error.
Right fielder Ray Suplee singled in
center fielder McKay Smith, who
had advanced to second on a
throwing error, to tie the game. Su
plee then scored on a sacrifice fly
by shortstop J R. Showalter, giving
the Dogs a 2-1 advantage.
Southern continued to trouble
Zdanowicz in the third inning as
left fielder Rob Fitzpatrick hit his
second home run against Georgia
this series to tie the game at 2-2.
Fitzpatrick homered in Southern’s
3-1 loss yesterday at Foley Field.
Following the home run, Zdano
wicz settled down and pitched
three scoreless innings.
Meanwhile, the Dogs put run
ners on first and second in the fifth
inning following singles by Sho
walter and left fielder Doug Rad-
ziewicz. Jester then popped his
home run over the right-field wall,
which, to the dismay of Southern
coach Jack Stallings, was called a
fair ball by umpire Ken Couch.
T really don’t know if it went
over,” Jester said. “It was ex
tremely close. When I hit it, I knew
it had a good chance of getting out
but I really can’t tell."
Regardless of the controversy,
the home run stood and gave the
Dogs a commanding 6-2 lead.
Jester, who leads the team with
three homers and eight RBI, barely
missed hitting for the cycle, sing
ling and doubling in his two other
at bats. Jester’s perfect afternoon
raised his batting average to .333
(10-for-30) for the season.
“Before the game coach Webber
told us that we have been swinging
at too many off-speed pitches and
not swinging at enough fastbnlls,”
Jester said. “I think that accounts
for us hitting better today.”
Freshman Tracy Wildes, who hit
in the DH position during the
game, also came in to strike out
Greene in a seventh inning bases
loaded jam to end the Eagles’ last
threat. Wildes was credited with
the save (1).
Diamond Dog Doings: Junior
shortstop J.R. Showalter is on pace
to shatter the Georgia record for
most career hits, currently held by
former catcher Roger Miller (286),
who signed on with the San Fran
cisco Giants last spring. Showalter
has 177 total hits. At his present
pace, the Virginia native will finish
with 334 hits.... Junior Doug Rad-
ziewicz has hit safely in eight con
secutive games. The record is 26,
held by David Jackson (1982)...

The Georgia women’s tennis
team hopes to improve its dual
match record to 6-1 with victories
in their two home matches this
weekend.
The Lady Netters face SEC foes
Alabama (4-0) on Saturday and
Vanderbilt (3-1) on Sunday. Both
matches begin at noon.
The Dogs’ only loss was handed
to them by an inspired Duke team
just two days after the Dogs pulled
out one of the biggest victories in
Georgia tennis history, beating
Andy Brandi’s Florida squad for
the first time ever in the regular
dual match season.
“I think our loss will help us in
stead of really hurt us," sophomore
left-hander Shawn McCarthy said.
"We know now that we really need
The Alabama squad is led by
identical twins Beth and Rachel
Marrow who play at No.l and No.2
singles respectively. They also
have identical dual match records
of 3-1.
Things could get confusing at
the courts on Saturday, because
Georgia also boasts a pair of iden
tical twins, Shawn and Shannan
McCarthy.
The Vanderbilt women’s tennis
team has never beaten Georgia.
But Georgia coach Jeff Wallace
feels that there are no guarantees
in collegiate tennis.
“Every team’s got good players.
Every team can improve,” Wallace
said. ‘We’re going to have to take
each match one team at a time.”
The Lady Commodores hope to
improve on their 3-18 record of last
year. They are led by Valerie
Young at No.l and Courtney Jones
at No.2 singles.
Next on the agenda for the Lady
Netters are the Intercollegiate
Coaches Association Team Indoor
Championships in Madison, Wis.
March 1-4.
