Buster-like Dogs floor Tysonesque LSU in SEC title bout
"83-83, LSU's Chris Jackson hits from the right side of the key to make
it 85-83 with 1:55 remaining!"
Georgia and mighty LSU were poised for a Sunday showdown for SEC
supremacy in the Coliseum. CBS was poised to give the nation a dose of
old-fashioned Southern inhospitality, cat-and-dog fight style. LSU — the
Mike Tyson of the SEC — taking on Georgia —the unknown Buster
Douglas.
"30 seconds to go!...Kessler drives to the basket...Good!...It's tied 85-
85!.. Foul on the play...It’s charging on Kessler!...Stanley Roberts goes to
the line for the one and one!"
When the Tigers came out on the floor to warm up, the ground shook
and the wood creaked at every step of the freshman Snaquille O’Neal and
sophomore Stanley Roberts. On the other side of the court stood Alec
Kessler and Neville Austin. A quick LSU knockout was predicted, for how
in the world were these two outsized Bulldogs going to guard these two
giants clad in urine-colored uniforms?
Hugh knew.
“First, we knew we were going to need heart and grit to win this game
and, second, we needed to use our quickness to draw fouls on their big
men," Durham said.
Durham knew this game wns going to be a long struggle, not a quick

team a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.
"We missed a lot of layups but
we were playing hard," Baldwin
said.
Despite Baldwin’s 10 points and
another 10 from Stacey Ford, the
day belonged to Georgia guard
Lady Hardmon. Her power drives
to the glass resulted in most of her
game-leading 20 points. The siz
zling sophomore has averaged 17.6
points through the last five games
(shooting roughly 61.6 percent)
and brought down an average six
rebounds.
Her layup with 7:38 remaining
in the first half boosted the Georgia
lead to nine. The lead was eight at
the end of the half.
The Lady Dogs used a mix of de
fenses and slick passing to blow the
Lady Tigers out in the second half.

unce pass from beyond the pe

breaking Camile Lowe for a layup
to go ahead by 10. Lowe finished
with eight points on the day.
LSU then made a couple of
forced turnovers when it got
caught in one of the Lady Dogs’
half-court trapping defenses.
Landers described his defensive
schemes as “fraudulent."
“(Our defense) is not man; it’s
not zone," Landers said. “It kept
people ofT-balance and it did that
tonight.”

half and Chris Jackson jabbed and stuck the Georgia defense to the tune
of 23 points. But, coach Durham was winning the war.
O'Neal had four fouls and Roberts had picked up three —punishing
blows to the Tigers’ stomachs that would tell later on in the fight. The un
dersized Bulldog duo of Kessler and Austin had combined to outrebound
the Bayou Bullies 11-5 and outscore them 13-4. Georgia went blow for
blow with the Tigers and controlled the lane. Kessler used his lauded
smarts and experience to take the ball to the young big men. O’Neal and
Roberts both fouled Kessler twice in the first half.
The lead was stretched to 19 before everyone had returned from the
halflime bathroom run. LSU used a quick run — three baskets by Vemel
Singleton and another jumper by Jackson — to send the Bulldogs reeling
and crashing to the mat. They needed a lift from their corner and the fans
delivered.
LSU — the Mike Tyson of the SEC — taking on
Georgia —the unknown Buster Douglas.
Those folks who camped out for tickets didn’t give up. Those alumni
who traveled for miles around didn’t give up. The little children who
didn’t know what the hell everyone was screaming about didn’t give up.
The screams and yells boosted the players and they went to work.
Cole brings it down against Jackson...Jackson strips it!...There's a
mad scramble for the bail at the top of the key...20 seconds left!
The plan started to pay dividends. LSU took a 57-38 lead with 17:30
to go. Five minutes and thirteen seconds later, Georgia trailed by three
59-56. In the 18-2 flurry, Alec Kessler nailed six points, Rod Cole busted
two treys and a layup, Litterial Green pierced the D for two, and Jody
Patton slapped in two free throws. Georgia had dusted themselves off and
regained their poise. They knew they had token LSU’s best shot and now
it was their turn to deal some blows.
For the next 10 minutes, the Dogs and Tigers went toe-to-toe and
played the most intense basketball of their lives. Litterial Green’s eyes
were lit with excitement as he went one-on-one with Jackson. He faked
and bopped to weave past Jackson. Kessler began taking it strong to the
hole past the helpless O’Neal, struck delirious with foul trouble. Marshall
Wilson blocked three foolish LSU attempts to score. Georgia was slowly
gaining control of the fight.
“They are still scrambling for the ball!...Durham wants Cole to call
time!...He dishes to Kessler!...Kessler sends it to Neville Austin!...Eight
seconds left!...He drives to the hoop!...He’s fouled by Roberts ..That’s six on
him!...Four seconds left and Neville is at the line for two shots!"
As I watched Austin warm up before the game, wondering how he
would stop O’Neal, the thought never crossed my mind that he would be
the man to step forward and land the telling blow. Green? Kessler? Cole?
— yes, Austin? —no.
“Time was running down, so I went to the basket,” Austin said. The
play was designed for Green to shoot a jumper or drive and try to get
fouled, but the play broke down.
“Timeout LSU!"
“When they called timeout, that kind of relaxed me a little,” Austin
said.
The old sly fox Brown was trying to ice Austin —clench the young man
and buy some time for his troops to regroup. Brown tried the same trick
against Rod Cole last month when the junior guard had to hit all three
free throws to send the game into overtime. Cole said the extra time re
laxed him as well. Poor Dale, maybe he’ll learn.
“Five seconds left!...Austin at the line for two shots!...The place is si-
lent!...People are praying!...Please Neville, please sink it!...Good!...Georgia
leads 86-85!...He aims for his second!...No good, rebound LSU!...Timeout
Tigers with four seconds left!"
Austin stuck LSU with an incredible right cross, which sent them
down by one. LSU called time and Georgia went to its corner. LSU was
awe-stricken at what had taken place. This fight was supposed to be easy!
Who are these guys?! They had four seconds to get off the mat and sink
the winning shot.
Four seconds left!...DeVall has the ball!...Not him, God not him!...He’s
already burned us!...He lets it fly!...
Evepone in the Coliseum, grew silent, watching a tiny orange inflat
able spheroid hurl in the atmosphere. Georgia was hoping that the ball
wou d not find the mark, hoping that LSU would not regain its feet and
steal the victory and spoil the plan and the effort.
He missed!...He missed!...We win!...Oh my God!..We beat LSU!!...
ball did not hit its intended destination. The referee stopped the
fight and Douglas — I mean Georgia — had upset LSU by a knockout.
