Pie conveys a mood
By BILL KENYON
Entertainment Writer
Blind Lemon Pie will be playing
tonight at the 40 Watt Club.
In a tiny storage room at Joe
Campbell’s warehouse on Broad
Street, Blind Lemon Pie prac
tices.
Influenced by a dozen bands
and one very famous author, they
like to write music that they de
scribe as “atmospheric.”
Standing outside of the prac
tice room in the freezing wind,
with the sun turning red over the
trees in the west, listening to
Doug Hundley’s wailing voice
echo like a banshee over the gTaf-
fitti-decorated parking lot out
side of the warehouse, one can
only agree.
Inside the storage room, be
sides lead singer Hundley, there
is lead guitarist Craig Bennett,
drummer Sam Holt, rhythm gui
tarist Spencer Frye and bassist
Pete Hayek.
The five claim to be influenced
by many bands, ranging from
Roxy Music and Love to the Sex
Pistols.
“It sounds kind of silly, but we
could be ‘Pink Floyd is introduced
to the Sex Pistols by The Smiths,’
” Hundley says.
"Most of us have an individual
INTERVIEW
influence that affects our music,”
adds Holt.
“Like the Partridge Family,”
pipes in Frye, and they all moan
in derision and scream, “Don’t
print that, don’t please!*
But their greatest influence
was never a musician at all.
“I like to write," says Hundley,
“I’m really into moods set by cer
tain poets. It’s not that we’re a
bunch of depressing guys, but we
like our music to have an atmo
sphere similar to Edgar Allan
Poe’s poetry. This might sound
trite, but our music tends to have
a dark side.”
Once again, laughter fills the
tiny room and the band members
jokingly compare themselves to
Batman and Darth Vader.
“No, reallv,” Hundley says,
“It’s hard to describe, but we just
like our poetry to convey a mood.”
The momentary derision over,
they all nod in agreement.
“Definitely,” they say, “a
mood.” And the unexpected Feb
ruary chill makes the breath of
passers-by opaque and misty.
Eventually, the sun disappears,
and they resume playing ghost
like noises muffled by the brick
walls of Joe Campbell’s ware
house.

Hollyfaith: From the Rockfish to Texas
By SHANNON BLAND
Entertainment Writer
Hollyfaith will play at the Rockfish
Palace tonight.
Hollyfaith, holiyhair, hollytooth-
brushes.
“Really?” I asked. “I know /all
are kidding.”
“No we’re not. What’s wrong
with it? We’re going to sell our hair
and call it Holiyhair. Seriously.”
Despite their teasing, Hollyfaith
was refreshingly unpretentious
when I talked to them Friday
night, before their show at The
Cotton Club.
This modern rock band formed
about two years ago when lead
singer Rob Aldridge and drummer
Chet Jameson met bassist David
Franklin and guitarist Kevin Mor
rison in Florida. Since that time,
they were voted “The Best Un
signed Rock Band in Georgia” in a
CMJ/RCA competition, and have
opened for such diverse groups as
the Indigo Girls and The God
fathers.
“Well, we used to open for The
Godfathers until Rob got into a
INTERVIEW
fight with the lead singer before
one of the shows," Morrison added.
Although the band has been
compared to Midnight Oil, their
sound is much heavier and more
intense, Morrison said.
“It’s hard to describe the sound
of the band. We don’t rely heavily
on just one sound, but we do have a
hard edge. We all like different
types of music and its reflected in
our sound," Jameson added.
“It’s like this, a human has
many personalities and so does a
band," Aldridge said.
Although they are unsigned,
many major labels have show in
terest in the band, Aldridge said.
“You have this illusion that ta
bles look for new bands that play
good music. Basically they look for
bands they can market. A lot of
major labels have come to see us
and they just seem to run us
around in circles," Aldridge said.
“Our direction has really become
more inward," Morrison said. We
tried to dc things for other people
and now we’re doing it for our-

selves." Hollyfaith hopes to release
its follow up to “OpiurrTin about
six months and this album will
have less of a layered sound Mor
rison said.
‘The next album will be more
stripped down and will have a sim
pler, more grinding sound,”
Franklin said.
The band won’t be playing in At
lanta until their March show at the
Roxy, produced by Southern Con
certs Promotion and 96-Rock.
Before their show tonight,
Franklin, who is also a very tal
ented acoustic guitarist, will be
performing at The Downstairs. He
began playing guitar at the age 11
and his insightful lyrics comple
ment his melodic voice.
So, now that the quarter is fi
