Lady Dogs primed for tourney; minds set on 4th SEC crown

The buzz words the sixth-ranked
Georgia women’s basketball team
are using while they prepare for
this weekend’s SEC tournament in
Albany are confidence and team
unity.
Team members say they’re
playing well, playing together and
nave their minds zeroed in on the
tournament championship They
want to avenge last season’s first
round loss to Mississippi.
“Our main objective is to win the
SEC,” said guard Lady Hardmon.
“Last year at SECs we weren’t
playing well, so when we lost, we
ley,
’ (Bu
anyway.' (But) we’re together this
year. When we lose, everybody
hurts.”
Adds point guard Sharon
Baldwin, ‘NVeYe a lot more deter
mined this year than in the past.
This time, the attitude is "Let’s go
out and beat them.’
“WeVe confident, not anywhere
near over confident. If we just play
good, we ought to win,” she said.
The guards’ words aren’t mere
bravado. Consider:
•The Lady Dogs are shooting
49.6 percent and averaging 82.1
points per game. Forward Stacey
Ford still leads the conference in
field goal percentage.
•Hardmon is also filling the
hoop. A late-season scoring binge
has enabled her to become
Georgia’s leading scorer with 13.9
a game — 16 points a game over
the last nine games.
•Hardmon, Ford and center
Tammy Jenkins this week were
named first team All-SEC, selected
by the league’s coaches. Georgia
was the only school to have three
players on the 10-member team.
Camille Lowe made the Freshman
All-SEC first team.
•Georgia owns the league’s best
tournament record. It’s 17-7 (.708
winnning percentage) is better
than Tennessee’s by a half-game.

Caryn Moss: Lady Netter
Lady Netters face ASU
By MICHELLE NOBLE
Sports Writer
The fourth-ranked Georgia women’s tennis team travels to Mad
ison, Wis. tomorrow to play No. 8 Arizona State in the first round of the
USTATTCA National Indoor Championship.
The Lady Netters are the No. 4 seed in the tournament behind de
fending champion Stanford, Florida, and UCLA.
Last year the Lady Netters finished in fourth place after losing to
Florida in the semi-finals and UCLA in the third-place match.
Georgia and Stanford, located in the same half of the draw, will
likely face each other in the semi-finals. But the Lady Sun Devils of Ari
zona State aren’t a team to be overlooked, according to Georgia’s coach.
They’ve got the type of team that can beat any team in the country
on a given day," Georgia women’s coach Jeff Wallace said. “If we play
our best and they play their best, we should slip by.”
The Lady Sun Devils are 8-3 ir. dual match play, with pJl three of
their losses being handed to them by teams ranked in the top 10.
They dropped a 5-3 match to No. 1 Stanford, a 6-3 match to No. 2
UCLA, and a 5-4 match to No. 6 Southern California.
Arizona State’s top netter is Krista Amend, who is ranked No. 43 in
the nation. The team of Karen Bergan and Jennifer Rojohn are tied for
the No. 17 doubles ranking, and just recently defeated the No. 3 ranked
team of Mamie Ceniza and Stella Sampras from UCLA 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
Lady Netter Caryn Moss, a sophomore baseliner, feels that the fast
courts of the Nielsen Tennis Stadium will be a factor in the tournament.
"Our team’s playing really well right now, but we’re going to have
some tough matches," Moss said. The fast courts are an equalizer that
can make the matches closer than they would usually be.”

Injured Parker returns to practice
Expects to play Monday
By RANDY WALKER
Sports Writer
Georgia tennis star A1 Parker’s arm injury is not as
serious as previously indicated.
The injury, an entramped nerve strain, was suf
fered over the weekend at the USTA/ITCA National
Team Indoors. The nation’s No. 1 collegiate tennis
player returned to practice Wednesday.
Orginally, the injury was believed to be a torn in
ternal rotator cuff, but was then rediagnosed as a se
vere nerve strain.
“At first, it felt like I would be out for a long time,”
Parker saidTt hurt really bad.”
As a freshman in 1988, Parker suffered a nerve in
jury in his back which sidelined him for three months.
Parker should be ready to compete in Monday’s 2
p.m. dual match against Florida at Henry Field Sta
dium.
“It’s very important that he be in form for us
against Florida,” Georgia coach Manuel Diaz said.
The Gators are the most improved team in the con
ference and we really need him in the line-up. Even
though Florida is unranked, they are very capable of
knocking us off.”
Parker will likely take on the Gators’ David Blair at
the No. 1 position.
Blair, ranked No 14 in the nation, won the Barnett
Bank Fall Classic and was a quarterfinalist at the
Southern Collegiate Championships last fall.
“David is as talented a tennis player as there is out
there,” Florida coach Inn Duvenhnge said. There is
no shot he can’t hit.”
Florida (6-0) is fresh off a 5-4 upset victory over
23rd-ranked Mississippi St. on Feb 17.
Monday’s match with the Gators is the first of a
string of five home matches Henry Field Stadium will
host in the next two weeks.
Georgia takes on Georgia Tech — March 5, No. 7
Miami — March 11, No. 10 Ole Miss — March 13, and
Virginia Tech — March 15.
All matches are free to students.
