Freshman all-arounders key gymnasts’success
By CHRIS LANCETTE
Sports Writer
The secrets to the success of the Georgia gymnastics team this season
have largely been kept by the three freshman all-arounders. They share a
winning chemistry that nobody quite knows the formula of.
“This group came in and got things going," coach Suzanne Yoculan
said. ‘They’re awesome ... But I don’t know exactly what it is that makes
them so similar.”
Although Lisa Alicea, Debbie Still and redshirt Traci Tilton play im
portant roles in Georgia’s defense of its national championship, it’s Sandy
Rowlette, Heather Stepp and Jennifer Carbone who get the notoriety.
•Teammates call Rowlette by her middle name, “Ruth,” just because
she hates it. Like the baseball legend of the 1920s who was known as
‘The Sultan of Swat”, Rowlette too knows about big swings. She has al
ready posted a 9.70 on the bars and her scores will certainly go higher as
she recovers from a torn muscle in her foot.
But Yoculan said it’s her vaulting score that may moke a critical dif
ference for the Gym Dogs this year.
“I think she could get 9.85s on vault and that could make the big dif
ference,” Yoculan said. “You need big guns on every event and we don’t
have one on vault. Sandy could be the big gun.”
•They call Stepp “Heathen” as aplay on her name. And if flying high
and getting scores to match ore immoral acts, she’s definitely a sinner.
She gets her entire body 10 feet above ground on some vaults — and she
comes down with 9.7s to show for it.
•The third freshman all-arounder is New York-native Carbone. She
doesn’t really have a nickname. She kicks butt quietly.
And like the other two, Carbone is team-oriented. Once asked by a re
porter what she though about becoming the first Georgia freshman to win
an all-around title since Corrinne Wright, she said she didn’t realize it.
Combined, Stepp and Carbone have six times beaten Corrinne
Wright, the 1989 national all-around champion. Stepp has posted
Georgia’s highest all-around score four times and Carbone has done it
twice.
Yet, the fact that all three are so talented doesn’t create their bond.
What has? Humor, for one thing. At practice, they laugh hard with
each other and more often seem like a bunch of giddy junior high school
girls than three of the most talented women in collegiate gymnastics.
Wit is only part of their winning formula. All three say they perceive
life similarly.
“We’re a lot a like," Stepp said. “1 don’t know why. I guess we just see
things the same way.”
Carbone adds, ‘There is a special bond between us. Because we’re all
three freshmen and all three all-arounders, we can see each other’s point
of view.”
Rowlette also points to their obvious similarities.
“We live the same lifestyle,” she said. “And we’re all determined to do
well.”
Yoculan agrees.
“They’ve had to take a lot of responsibility, more than any other
freshmen all-arounders ever had,” she said. “1 think they realized they
had to handle that pressure or say goodbye to Georgia.
“All three had to tread water together, so they held hands and swam.”
Gym Dogs on the rise; coast to weekend win

Heather Stepp: The Michigan native, one of the three
freshmen all-arounders who has led the Gym Dogs to the
No. 5 ranking, won the Bulldog Invitational all-around title -

After a much needed two-week-
break from competition, the fifth-
ranked Georgia gymnastics team
(13-2) scored a 191.75 and crushed
five opponents in the Bulldog Invi
tational at the Coliseum Saturday
night.
Utah State placed second with a
186.90, while Kentucky took third
with a 185.4. BYU finished fourth
(185.2), West Virginia fifth
(184.05) and North Carolina sixth
(177.5).
The win is the third consecutive
meet marking a peaking that if it
continues, will make Georgia one
of the top two competitors for the
NCAA championship. Utah, the
nation’s top-ranked team, is doing
the most difficulty it has ever done.
“I think it’s coming together,”
Georgia coach Suzanne Yoculan
said. “We’re certainly making im
provements in every meet. No one
is taking any steps backward. I feel
a lot better about the direction the
team is going in than I’ve felt at
any other point of the season.”
Freshman Heather Stepp scored
a career-high 38.55 to win her
fourth all-around title. Senior Cor
rinne Wright scored a 38.15 and
tied for second.
“Heather was great,” Yoculan
said. “I always knew she was ca
pable of scoring that well. She’s
getting back to full strength after
injuring her ankle last quarter."
Stepp tied for first on the vault
with teammate Jennifer Carbone
with scores of 9.65. Stepp placed
second on bars behind Wright with
scores of 9.7 and 9.8, respectively.
She also scored a 9.75 on floor to tie
for first with Utah State’s Amy
Winn.
The Gym Dogs started the meet
on vault and posted a solid 47.6.
Georgia then moved to the bars
and hit a 47.90. The Lady Dogs
aced the beam, an apparatus that
had been giving them much trouble
during the early season, on the
third rotation.
Senior Andrea Thomas again
won the balance beam, scoring a
9.8.
The Bulldog Invitational also
marked sophomore Julie Ponsten’s
return to the lineup after missing
four weeks because of back spasms.
She posted a 9.55 Saturday.
“Julie did a great job,” said Yo
culan, who considers her the
team’s second strongest beam
worker on the team.
Ponstein said the month-long
absence gave her mixed reactions
as she prepared to mount the
beam.
“When you’re up there and hear
all the fans yelling, that’s an in
credible feeling,” she said. T was
really nervous, yet I couldn’t wait
to get up there,” she said. “I felt
like it was the first meet.
Sophomore Missy DePaoli, who
posted a 9.65 on beam, led ofT the
floor exercise with a 9.50. The team
finished with a 48.2 in the event.
Julie Ponstein: Gym Dog re
turned to lineup Saturday
and recorded a 9.55 on the
beam - her highest ever.
