Diamond Dogs crush Camels 10-2 for 6th straight victory
Brian Jester: Diamond Dog gets nailed at home plate by Campbell catcher Mark Mallette.
Fortunately for Georgia, they didn't need the run in Wednesday’s 10-2 win, their 10th in
the last 11 games.
By ERIC GARBER
Sports Writer
Once again, the Georgia baseball team fell behind
in the first inning, and, once again, it came back to
win.
Down 1-0 after three innings of play Wednesday af
ternoon, the Diamond Dogs scored a total of nine runs
in the next two en route to a 10-2 victory over Camp
bell University, clinching a series sweep.
Georgia is now 12-4 and has won six straight ball
games, including 10 of its last 11.
“We had a good effort today,” Georgia coach Steve
Webber said. “Even though our hitters got out in front
of a few pitches, we were able to score.”
Georgia picked up two in the fourth to take a 2-1
lead. But its real push came in the fifth inning, when
the Dogs sent 10 batters to the plate and scored seven
runs.
Second baseman Joey Alfonso led off the inning by
beating out a bunt down the first-base line. Center
fielder McKay Smith’s single and third baseman Jeff
Cooper’s bunt down the third-base line loaded the
bases with no outs. Designated hitter 3rian Jester
then dribbled an infield hit to score Alfonso, making
the score 3-1.
A passed ball by Campbell catcher Mark Mallette,
consecutive RBI singles by Georgia’s Ray Suplee and
Tommy Owen, and a two-run error by Camel left-
fielder Mike Adcock completed the seven-run inning
and gave Georgia a 9-1 advantage.
“We were excited out there today,” Jester said. “We
were more determined than in a few games of lute and
that helped us score runs."
Junior right-hander Tom Zdonowicz (2-0) allowed
only one run on seven hits through seven complete in
nings to earn the win. Senior southpaw Ray Kirschner
then came in to pitch two scoreless innings, striking
out the side in the ninth to end the contest.
“It’s a lot easier to hit when you’re pitcher breezes
through like Z (Zdanowicz) did today," Jester said. “It
gave us a chance to relax a little more up there at the
plate and concentrate on what we were doing."
Jester went 2-for-4 on the day, raising his season
average to .414. The senior DH also stole two bases.
CU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning ns
lead-off hitter Adcock and center fielder Randy Hood
singled consecutively to put runners on first and
second with no outs. Following a successful sacrifice
by third baseman Ed Stanley, designated hitter J.C.
Hendrix hit into a 5-3-5 double play that scored Ad
cock.
“Zdanowicz was a little shaky in the first inning but
began to settle down," Webber said. “He effectively
threw strikes when he needed to. He did a good job.”
Ricky Berrier (0-2) took the loss for UC. The
Fighting Camels fall to 1-6 on the senson.
Diamond Do* Doings: Third baseman Jeff
Cooper has hit safely in 11 straight games, tying his
career high (1988)... Georgia’s seven runs in the fifth
inning Wednesday are the most the team has scored
in a single inning this season. The previous high was
four, reached several times in the squad’s first 16
games.
Long-awaited matchup headlines intramural championships tonight
By ROBERT McDONALD
Sports Writer
After a fast and frenzied tourna
ment that saw its share of
squekers and blowouts, three
games remain to be played in the
1990 intramural basketball
season.
It’s championship time with the
men’s, women’s and the 5-10 &
under league title games set to be
played tonight at the Coliseum.
Headlining the night is the long-
awaited men’s final. The No. 1 Hell
Boys face the No. 2 Speedboys at
7:30 p.m. in a game which will de
cide once and for all who the bad-
dest boys on the court really are.
The Hell Boys have yet to be
challenged as their road to the fi
nals have been paved with blowout
wins. On Tuesday, the Boys
scorched So Fine 93-22 in a final
tune-up for their championship
match.
Intramural basketball director
Frank Crumley’s prediction that
the Hell Boys would not be tested
until late in the tournament has
rung true.
‘The/re looking better and
better, Crumley said of the Hell
Boys. “It’s going to be a terrific
game.”
The Speedboys trek to the
championship has been a little
tougher, having met better teams
than the Hell Boys.
Kappa Alpha Psi tested the
Speedboys in the quarterfinals be
fore losing. The Knights of the
Roundball, ranked No. 4, then fell
a few baskets short of toppling the
No. 2 team in the semifinals.
After leading by four midway
through the first half, the Knights
failed to score on consecutive trips
down the floor. A free throw and a
Mike Ganote trey tied things up at
17, but the Knights would never
see the lead again.
The Knights hung tough though,
cutting the Speedboy lead to three
on a Deryl Durham jumper with
about 10 minutes to play in the
game. But some tough defense and
clutch free throw shooting down
the stretch secured the 63-51 win
for the Speedboys.
“We were there,” Knights of the
Roundball captain Grady York
said. “We had our chances to win,
but we just didn’t do it."
In the first game of the triple
header, the Jr. Speedboys meet
Double Dribble at 5:30 p.m. for the
5-10 & under championship.
Double Dribble tamed the Mad
Dogs 59-43, while the Jr. Speed
boys spanked Short Stuff 63-46 in
semifinal action Tuesday at Ste-
geman Hall.
The women’s final pits the No.l
ranked BSU Assault against a
tough Killer Lamb team.
The Assault advanced from the
semifinals by the smallest of mar
gins as it edged the Tornado 38-37
on two last-second free throws by
guard Angela Denton.
With her team down by one with
seven seconds remaining, Denton
dribbled the length of the floor and
was fouled on a shot attempt from
the right comer. With the game
and the Assault’s championship
hopes in the balance, Denton cooly
hit nothing but net with both shots.
“I knew they were going in,”
Denton said. “At least that’s what I
was telling myself at the line.”
The Lambs earned their place in
the finals by knocking off Delta
Zeta 36-30. The Lambs are a quick
team that takes good care of the
ball.
Tonight’s championship games
should be exciting and anyone af
flicted with a case of the Univer
sity’s new found hoops hysteria flu,
ought to check them out.
Admission is free.
