Gym Dogs soar past No. 6 UCLA
By CHRIS LANCETTE
Sports Writer
The third ranked Georgia gym
nastics team whipped a dov n-
t rod den, sixth-ranked UCLA I'.dv
Bruins 192 55 191.35 in the Col
iseum Saturday. The Lady Dogs
scored a season high team score,
broke the school vaulting record
and even drew a well of emotion
from ever-stoic assistant coach
Doug McAvinn.
“You’re awesome,” McAvinn
shouted to the team after Sandy
Rowlette’s 9.70 vault gave the
Lady Dogs the record-breaking
48 30. The apparatus total bested
by .20 the previous mark, set both
at regional® in 1988 and at Florida
in 1989
Georgia’s Heather Stepp pluced
second on the event with a 9.75, be
hind UCLA vaulting phenom Jill
Andrews. Rowlette took third.
The Gym Dogs did a lot more
than vault Saturday night. They
hit 22 of 24 routines (one of their
two fulls was a fluke mishap on
bars) maintained their concentra
tion throughout all four events.
and continued to ride the all-im
portant, season-ending peak.
Peaking is the key phrase in
gymnastics. Ideally, teams don’t
want to hit everything in sight
from day one because it’s virtually
physically impossible to maintain
that performance level throughout
the season. But in the three or four
meets before a team goes to re
gional, it wants to begin putting it
all together and race toward the
national championship.
“We looked strong,” Georgia
coach Suzanne Yoculan said. "We
looked like we were ready for a
championship meet. We seemed
confident and under control emo
tionally. You couldn’t ask for much
more. We never lost our focus.”
Georgia senior Corrinne Wright,
especially, maintained her focus.
Wright, the defending national
all around champion, has been
heating up and Saturdny stuck a
9.85 on floor and bars. She finished
with a 38.80 and t<x>k second in the
all-around. Andrews scored a
39.05, setting a Coliseum record to
win the all-around.
Gym Dog Andrea Thomas nailed
the balance beam with a 9.90. If
she continues at her present pace,
she may poet a perfect 10 before
the season is out. Oklahoma’s
Kelly Garrison-Steves and
Georgia’s Lucy Wener are the only
other two collegiate gymnasts in
history to have achieved that per
fection.
While Georgia controlled the
meet from the first event, UCLA
turned in a solid performance de
spite a number of problems — like
just getting to Athens for instance.
The team plane from Los An
geles was an hour and 15 minutes
late arriving to Atlanta. The team
then got lost northbound some
where on Interstate 85 and didn’t
reach Athens until 12:30 a.m. Sat
urdny morning.
The jet-lagged Lady Bruins then
entered the Coliseum knowing two
of its best performers, seniors Kim
Hamilton and Shawn McGinnis,
didn’t even make the trip because
of injuries.
“We seemed lackluster," UCLA
coach Jerry Tomlinson said.
'That’s not an excuse. We have to
learn to psych ourselves up more."
Andrea Thomas: Senior nailed a 9.90 on the balance beam Saturday against UCLA

Jensen-Parker duo clinches
dual match win over Miami
By RANDY WALKER
Sports Writer
Despite being a left-hander,
Murphy Jensen’s right hand
came in handy Sunday after dark
at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor
Center.
It helped the third-ranked
Georgia men’s tennis team clinch
a dramatic 5-4 victory over No. 4
Peter Frey/The Red and Black
Murphy Jensen: He and
Georgia Netters host Ole
Miss today at 2 p.m.
Miami in a final set tie-break at
No. 1 doubles.
Serving at 4-2 in the final set
tie-break against the Hurricane’s
Conny Falk and Johan Donar,
Jensen stretched and hit a half
volley with his right hand off a
sharply angled forehand from
Falk. The snot floated to Donar
at net who missed the volley long
and oDened up the tie-break 5-2
for Jensen and partner A1
Parker.
T had to stretch to get it," said
Jensen whose brother Luke is
noted for his ambidextrous
strokes. “I just used my other
hand to block it back.”
Jensen and Parker won the
next two points to win the match
4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) to clinch one of
the most exciting dual matches in
Georgia tennis history.
‘This is probably as exciting a
win as we’ve ever had,” Georgia
coach Manuel Diaz said.
“Murphy and A1 really came
through for us in the end.”
To be more specific, it was
Jensen and Parker’s serving
which came through for the
Bulldog tandem. They lost only
seven points on serve, won 86
percent of points when they put
their first serves in play and
never faced a break point in the
third set.
Falk and Donar won only one
point and put a mere two returns
back in play off Jensen’s highly
spun second serves.
“Murphy’s second serves really
made the difference in the
match," Diaz said. “It allowed A1
to move at the net and pick off
some volleys.
Georgia’s No. 1 doubles team
was able to set up easy sitters off
hard-hit and well-placed wide
first serves.
With Parker serving to stay in
the match at 4-5 in the third,
Jensen knocked off two forehand
volley winners off weak returns
as Parker held serve at love.
Two games later with Jensen
in the same situation at 5-6,
Parker returned the favor inter
cepting three Miami returns to
win points as Jensen also held at
love to send the match in a final
set tie-break.
“We created a hole through the
middle of the court and started
pumping balls through there,”
Jensen said.
Mike Morrison and Patricio
Arnold overcame physical ail
ments to win at No. 3 doubles to
set up Jensen and Parker for
their match-clinching victory.
Morrison fought off leg cramps,
while Arnold played most of the
second and the entire third set
with a sprained ankle in their 2-
6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Daniel De
Boer and Larry Angus.
With a crowd of about 2,000 in
attendence, Georgia and Miami
tied 3-3 after singles as Falk out
lasted Parker at No. 1 singles 6-2,
4-6, 6-3. Arnold at No. 3, Jensen
at No. 6 and Hector Nevares at
No. 4 all won singles matches for
the Bulldogs.
