Dogs draw Texas
in NCAA Midwest
By DAVID PACE
Sports Writer
ORLANDO, Fla. - After a disap
pointing early exit from the SEC
tournament in Orlando, the
Georgia men’s basketball team
found new life with a bid to the
NCAA tournament.
It was announced on Sunday
that the Dogs, the regular season
SEC champs and 20-8 overall, have
the seventh seed in the Midwest
Regional and will play tenth-
seeded Texas in the first round.
Georgia’s half of the Midwest
bracket will play the first and
second rounds in Indianapolis.
Texas, 21-8 overall and 12-4 in
the SWC, finished third in its con
ference behind Arkansas and
Houston. Last year, the Longhorns
knocked off Georgia Tech in the
first round of the NCAA tourna
ment before falling to Missouri
108-89. This marks the first time
that Texas has made back-to-back
appearances in the tournament.
The Dogs may have hurt their
chances of receiving a bid to the
East or Southeast Regionals by
losing to Vanderbilt 78-74 in the
quarterfinals of the SEC tourna
ment. Georgia was outrebounded
by the Commodores 42-27.
“Give Vandy all the credit in the
world,” forward Alec Kessler said.
"We’ve shown all year that we’re a
pretty good team in the clutch.
Vanderbilt proved that they were a
good team in the clutch also.”
Kessler led all scorers with 23
points. Marshall Wilson had 14
points, Rod Cole netted 13 and
Jody Patton posted 12 to lead the
Dogs. Guard Litterial Green
struggled through the worst game
of his young career with only two
points, although he led the team
with five assists.
“It was an interesting game,”
Vanderbilt Head Coach Eddie
Fogler said. “ If you had told me be
fore the game that we would hold
Litterial Green to two points, I
wouldn’t have believed it.”
Compared to Vand/s slow, me
thodical style of basketball, the
Dogs look forward to playing
Texas. The speedy Longhorns are a
guard-oriented team that depends
a lot on the three-point shot.
Georgia players feel more comfort
able with an up-tempo game.
Rod Cole: Scored 13 in
tourney loss to Vandy.
“Definitely. As a team, we play
better when we run the ball,”
Kessler said.
The Dogs have already put their
dismal performance in the SEC
tournament behind them in order
to prepare for Texas.
“A sign of a good team is coming
back after a loss and playing
tough,” Rod Cole said.
They’re going to have to because
their next Toes will be their last.

Diamond Dogs down Virginia 13-1
By ERIC BARBER
Sports Writer
The Georgia baseball team,
after knocking ofT Old Dominion
13-6 and 16-9 this past weekend
to complete a series sweep, im
proved its winning streak to nine
games by pounding the Virginia
Cavaliers 13-1 Monday afternoon
at Foley Field.
Freshman left fielder Ray Su-
plee hit two home runs (4) and
right-handed pitcher Tom Zdano-
wict allowed only one run on nine
hits to cap off his first complete
game of tne season. As a team,
the Diamond Dogs popped four
round-trippers.
“I felt good out there today,”
Zdanowicz said. “I still have a
few things to work on, but this
outing helpB my confidenne going
into SEC play.
Georgia, ranked 17th by Base
ball America, is now 15-4 and has
won 13 out of its last 14 contests.
Its nine-game winning streak is
the team’s longest since 1980
when it won 11 in a row.
Once again, Georgia wasted
little time scoring. J.R. Sho-
walter’s three-run homer in the
first inning marked the eighth
time in the last 12 games that the
Dogs have scored in the first.
