The Georgia men’s tennis team (10-1) won singles matches at Nos 1-
4, to chalk up a 5-4 victory over Ole Miss yesterday at Henry Feild Sta
dium.
Mike Morrison’s come-from-behind 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 victory over
Mike Knowles at No. 3 singles gave the Dogs the 4-2 lead after singles
"Morrison’s win was the won that broke our back," Ole Miss coach
Billy Chadwick said.
After being nearly served off the court by the 6-4, 200-pound
Knowles, Morrison regrouped to push the second set into a tie-break.
"Mike started to get cranked up,” Georgia coach Manuel Diaz said.
“I knew we needed for him to win and he knew it."
The Bulldog senior bolted to a 6-4 lead in the second set tie-break
and hit a running forehand crosscourt passing shot from Court 2 to
clinch the tie-break 7-4.
"That shot was huge,” Morrison said. “It gave me a lot of confidence
going into the third set, and I think it got him down in the third.”
Morrison’s groundstrokes in the third set were relentless, punishing
Knowles from corner to corner wearing down the Rebel sophomore until
finishing off the final set 6-1.
Murphy Jensen’s undefeated run in dual match singles came to an
end as he lost to Jamie Booras 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 6.
Jensen, 8-1 in dual singles matches, went down two mini-breaks 6-3
in the final set tie-break on a marvelous Booras return of serve, and a
double-fault. Jensen hit two returns of serve, which Booras could not re
turn to go back on serve in the tie-break 6-5. But the Rebel junior iced
the match with a forehand passing shot.
"(Booras) played a great tie-break," Jensen said. “He didn’t miss a
first serve and returned awesome.”
Georgia’s A1 Parker was victorious over Nick Barone at No. 1 singles
6-2, 6-3. With Jensen, he clinched the match at No. 1 doubles beating
Knowles and Booras 6-4, 6-3.
