THE AMERICAN EXPRESS* CARD FOR STUDENTS MORE THAN EVER
Andrews comes home
By INGRID REEVES
Contributing writer
The Madison-Morgan Cultural
Center proudly displays “Recent
Work by Benny and George An
drews,” an exhibit of paintings,
works on paper and constructions,
through April 18.
Georgia artist Benny Andrews,
who grew up in Madison, Ga., is
representative of the rare artistic
talent embedded in the South.
Keye McCulloch, director of In
formation and Education at the
Madison-Morgan Cultural Center,
said Andrews does very sophisti
cated art, which is demonstrated in
his large paintings and collage
work.
“He’s inspired by his father,
George, whose collection of found
objects is decorative and whim
sical,” she said. “I can see an Af
rican heritage in George’s work.”
Benny Andrews cultivated his
inspiration by attending the Chi
cago Institute of Art in the 1950s,
where he was one of few South
erners, and one of few black stu
dents enrolled at the institute.
After graduating from the insti
tute, Andrews moved to New York,
where he has been a professor of
art at the City University for 22
years.
Andrews said the exhibit in
Madison is a homage to the people
of the Madison area. The art por
trays a lot of environmental and
relevant images.
“I wanted to communicate with
the people and to rekindle some
memories for the people I grew up
with,” he said. ‘These works are
very personal and special to me.”
The exhibit is part of a large hu
manities project, The Andrews
Family of Morgan County: Arts &
Letters in Rural Georgia,* orga
nised by the Uncle Remus Regional
Library System and the Madison-
Morgan Cultural Center, with sup
port from the Georgia Humanities
Council, the Georgia Council for
the Arts and the Institute of Mu
seum Services.
Andrews is the product of a suc
cessful and artistic family. His
mother sold her first story in 1949.
His brother, Raymond Andrews, is
a novelist, and he is the proud fa
ther of an architect and a sculptor.
This exhibition portrays a
family who went into the arts,” An
drews said.
“My father was my inspiration,”
he added. They said I started
drawing at the age of two or three.*'
Andrews now maintains a studio
in New York and in the Athens
area.
The studio in the Athens area is
my place of relaxation from the
city,* he said.
The Madison-Morgan Cultural
Center is located at 434 S. Main St.
in Madison. The gallery is open to
the public Tues. through Sat., 10
a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday, 2
.m. to 5 p.m. Admission to the
uilding is $2 for adults, $1 for stu
dents and free to members of the
Center. For information, call (404)

Smash Fantastic will be playing
tonight at The Exsirlence.
In the wake of all the socially
aware music dominating the
Athens scene, do you sometimes
feel that your consciousness has
been raised just a little too high?
Does constantly worrying
about AIDS, the environment,
nuclear war and republican ad
ministrations make you, well, a
bit depressed? What I mean is, do
you want to dance?
Then get those feet in the air
and get on down to the Exsirlence
tonight to see Smash Fantastic, a
band best described as fearlessly
upbeat and downright happy.
Smash Fantastic incluaes lead
singer/guitarist Steve (no rela
tion to Ronnie) Milsap, drummer
Richard Grant, rhythm guitarist
Andy Cobourn, bassist Jimmy
(no relation to the pear) Bartlett
and (the gorgeous) keyboardist
Laura Puckett.
The band hails from Athens
and most of the members reside
at the lovely Smash Palace,
wherever that is.
Milsap and Grant are the
founding fathers of the band,
having met when they both
worked in an Athens pizzeria,
“Steve not believing Richard
when he said he was a drummer
and Richard not believing Steve
when he told him that he had just
moved from Atlanta where he
had been a studio musician,”
Puckett said.
Grant actually began playing
drums with the birth of the band
and believes it to be his destiny,
he said.
“In a dream, I looked to the sky
to see three times seven angels,
singing in unison ‘Smash Fan-
Smash Fantastic: This band will make your feet fly
tastic, Smash Fantastic,’ ” Grant
said. “Of course, at the time I had
no idea what that meant.”
Puckett said Grant and Milsap
“then were introduced to Andy
through a common friend and
Jimmy joined up when being con
sidered for another band with
which Steve was involved,”
Puckett said.
Puckett joined a year later,
after convincing them that what
they lacked was keyboards for
their energetic sound, called
“urban dance music” by Grant.
The members caution that the oc
casional message slips into their
songs.
