In Lady Hardmon, Georgia has its own Michael Jordan
As her name implies, Lady Hardmon is truly a lady on and off the court
By CHRIS LANCETTE
Sports Writer
She makes teammates laugh
and opponents wince And Sunday
afternoon in the Coliseum in the
first round of the NCAA women’s
basketball tournament, her coach
will call out “Jordan,’ but he won’t
be looking for Chicago's Michael
Instead, Georgia women’s coach
Andy Landers will be calling a play
and want another high-flier —
point guard Lady Hardmon. She
may lie one of the funniest, up
tempo athletes in the country.
She’s also one of the beat, so good
that Landers designed the Jordan
play for her.
When he sends in the play, tea
mmates set picks and clear-outof
her way because she’s taking it to
the hoop.
*‘I get hyped when the play
comes in because 1 know I’m about
to do something I enjoy," Hardmon
said in her, excited, rapid-fire
speech pattern that symbolizes
how she does everything else in
life. “I can’t wait for them to set the
picks so I can get the ball. I get in
tense because I know this one is for
me'
And when Hardmon, the only
player named to the SEC All-Tour
nament Team who wasn’t in the
championship game, drives the
lane, no one can stop her. When
she had an outside jumper blocked
against Tennessee in the tourna
ment, she got the ball back and
drove inside. Count ’em.
Landers, always one to keep
players humble, said reporters
should ask Hardmon about an
other clear-out in the Georgia play
book. “She thinks she’s hot stuff,” a
grinning Landers said after prac
tice Wednesday. “But we run the
same play to the other wing and

call it ‘Bird.’”
Hardmon said Tuesday af
ternoon that a dream-come-true for
her would be to do commercials for
the Nike shoe company promoting
women’s athletic shoes.
“I could be ‘Air Lad/” she joked.
But the joke may be a self-fulfilling
prophecy — the 5-foot 10-inch
sophomore from Atlanta can dunk.
She hasn’t done it in a game yet,
but if she can improve the move, it
might happen.
“I’m not consistent,” she said. “I
might try five in a row and make
none. But on a good day, I might
make it.”
It’s fitting that Hardmon would
like to make shoe commercials be
cause her feet are as quick as her
wit.
‘There’s not another guard in
the country that has as quick a
first a first step as she does,”
Landers said. “And when you com
bine that explosive first step with
her strength, she’s hard to stop."
Just like Michael.
The similarities between the
premeir flying wonder and the pro
tege don’t stop off the court when
the guards take off their jerseys
with the number 23 on them.
Hardmon thinks Jordan is cool.
She should know. Teammates say
she’s the coolest.
“You’ve got to get to know Lady
to understand (how cool she is),”
junior guard Adrienne Shuler said.
“You can’t place a limit on her cool
ness. Off tne court, she picks you
up when you’re down, makes you
smile.
“She does loads of goofy stuff on
the court to provide you with a lot
of encouragment. She’ll brush up
against you and tell you to get your
head up or shell just give you some
type of look that makes you laugh."
Hardmon doesn’t control all the
laughs though. While the Lady
Hoopsters divy up the points in the
gym, they also share the jokes out
side of it.
Senior Sharon Baldwin’s nick
name is “Crazy". While the hus
tling guard has a tendency to break
her own bones playing basketball,
she’s one of the many who also
break other people up without the
high tops.
Shuler, forward Stacey Ford and
off guard Kim Berry are other
leading jokesters.
“It’s wild,” Shuler said. “We all
have a lot of fun off the court and
that carries over into our basket
ball. We’re real close."
But Hardmon isn’t just a happy-
go-lucky person. To know
Hardmon is to know a compassio
nate, deep-thinking woman.
“If she found out something she
said hurt you, she’s feel worse than
you do," Landers said. “She’s a very
pleasant person. She’s fun to be
around and yet has a serious and
sincere side that makes the happy-
go-luckv tag go away."
Hardmon has been as much a
part of the team unity as the suc
cess of the team, boosting team mo
rale and scoring in double figures
in her last 11 games.
Stats show she’s a great athlete.
Teammates say she’s a great
person.
The name she’d call herself in
the shoe commercials couldn’t be
more appropriate — Air Lady.
