Coach Durham raps about his Dogs
DOG
By MY WILSON
Sports Writer
Editor’s Note: Before the Bull
dogs left for its first-round NCAA
tournament game against Texas in
Indianapolis tonight, Jay Wilson
talked to coach Hugh Durham
about Georgia’s season and its
chances in the NCAAs.
R&B: What does the NCAA tour
namerit bid mean to this team?
Durham: “It means we’ve
reached a goal. It was one of
the goals we established. We
wanted to win the SEC
championship, to win the SEC
tournament, and to receive a
NCAA bid. We reached 2 of our
3 goals. We won the SEC and
made the NCAA tournament.
Alot of people doubted we
► it. Tha
could do it
iiat makes our ac
complishments even more spe
cial.
R&B: What has the teams’ atti
tude been coming off the loss to
Vanderbilt?
Durham: “It was a dissa-
pointing loss. That’s all you can
say.”
R&B: Texas is a team with a lot
of firepower. What will be the de
fensive keys for Georgia on Friday ?
Durham: “Their perimeter
players are very strong and
they will present a real chal
lenge. They’re like Kentucky in
that the three-point shot is part
of their offense. Like Georgia
Tech they have great shooters.
Stopping their perimeter will
be a big key.”
R&B: What must the team do of
fensively?
Durham. “We must be able to
handle their defensive pres
sure. We must shoot the ball
well and wisely."
R&B You have experience in
post season tournaments with both
Georgia and FSU. What is the dif
ference between the regular season
and a tournament in terms of inten
sity and preparation?
Durham: “Preparation is
pretty much like it was when I
was at FSU. We were ail inde
pendent team so we a played a
variety of teams and we didn’t
know the teams as well. For ex
ample, we don’t know Texas as
well as we know Tennessee. In
preparing for the game, we
must rely on what we do well.
During the season you can
make adjustments, but in the
tournament you just line up
and play. You keep winning or
you go home."
R&B: A lot of talk has been made
comparing this team to the ’83
team. How do you feel they com
pare?
Durham: “I try not to com
pare teams. Each team has its
own personality. Each team is
different, but these teams were
both champions. The ’83 team
had to prove they could win
without (Dominique) Wilkins
and this team wanted to prove
that they were much better
than last year’s record indi
cated. So in that sense, both
teams were on missions."
R&B: What will this team have
to do to reach the same level?
Durham: “Well, we’ve got to
beat Texas first. That won’t be
an easy task."
R&B: The campus became bas
ketball crazy this season, a trend
that hopefully will continue. As the
team heads for Indianapolis, what
the students
would you like to tell l
who supported you this year?
Durham: “The students are a
big part of our championship. 1
reflect on the Florida, Auburn
and LSU home games. When we
f 'ot behind they wouldn’t let us
ose. I don’t think we could
have won the SEC without
them. It was a team
championship-players,
coaches, and students."
