Gene, the R&B sports-editor
machine, relinquishes reins
Well, the quarter has sadly come
to a close and I will be relin
quishing the reins of the sports
desk. The bright sunshine, dusty
softball infield, and ladies galore
are all beckoning and, therefore, I
must leave this terminal and in
vestigate all of the sights and
sounds of spring quarter.
This quarter has had its high
and low points. I sincerly appre
ciate the people who showed an in
terest in the cheer contest and
talked sports with me. I also thank
my writers — Chris Lancette,
David Pace, Eric Garber, Randy
Walker, Michelle Noble, Jay
Wilson, Robert McDonald and Gu-
thene Schaffer and my copy editors
Jennifer Wilkin and Trevor Pad
gett. These are the folks that made
it fun to come to work and easy to
put out solid sports daily.
Our staff is small and dedicated,
but we do need more folks to cover
every sports team. It takes a lot to
cover a sport accurately and this
quarter my writers have done an
excellent job in giving interesting
stuff daily. It’s a tough job covering
a sport by yourself, the Atlanta
Journal doesn’t even do that, and
our writers do it better than
anyone.
The low points stem from people
who whine and complain about
things we have no control over. We
are late on stories because we don’t
publish on Mondays and we don’t
have unlimited space like Furman
Bisher of the Atlanta Journal. Our
first obligation is the University of
Georgia athletic programs — no
small task there with the quality of
our teams, and then we work in the
other stuff such as club sports and
intramurals. With that said, let’s
analyze some letters and com
ments folks have given me this-
quarter.

You don t run enough stories on
the cycling team. I can't figure The
Red and Black out. You run too
much stuff about the basketball
team. I can go to the Athens Ob
server and read about cycling, yet I
can t read about the University's
own club team in the paper!—An
unidentified caller.
Give me a break! The Gym Dogs
are in the top five in the nation,
Durham’s Dogs won their first SEC
title in 57 years, both tennis teams
are in the top five nationally, the
Landers’ Ladies ended the regular
season at No. 7, and the baseball
team is in the Top 20. Although cy
cling is definitely important, how
can we neglect these awesome
teams?
I would hate to hear from the
South’s bottom dawg if you are the
Top Dawg. Your Auburn bashing
articles are just like your football
team. poor. Your article urging the
Georgia students to give Auburn
hell was real inspirational, but in
the future you might want to re
mind the Georgia football team to
show up as well Gene, you might
not like us, but Auburn fans love
Sanford Stadium. —Thad Whit
field, Law student.
Thad, Georgia fans love Au
burn’s Joel Evans Memorial Col
iseum. Remember that’s the site
where Georgia won its SEC
championship. You may have
watched the game and heard the
multitude of Georgia students
chuckling as dejected Tiger fans
left the place with their tails be
tween their legs.
Being a swimming fan in partic
ular, I looked for an article about
the UGA-Alabama swim meet in
the Feb. 9, 1990 Red and Black I
was very disappointed to see that
there was nothing about the swim
meet except a crytic announcement
in the Fanfare box — Stuart Fors,
Associate Professor Dept, of Health
Promotion and Behavior.
I dropped the ball on that one.
That weekend the gymnasts and
Durham’s Dogs were playing Ala
bama in important contests in each
of their seasons. I made a decision
to focus our attention on those two
teams rather than the swim team.
If we'd had more space that day, we
would have given the talented
swimmers some ink, but we
couldn’t. We do not slight any team
on purpose.
/ would like to say to Gene that
for someone who claims to be such a
great fan, you sure are very critical.
Quit being so critical of Dawg fans
and their cheers.— Joe Dent, Law
student.
Joe, let me tell you something. I
am a Bulldog fan. I spent ten years
of my early childhood in Athens. I
went to see Georgia basketball
games before Hugh Durham was
the coach. John Gutherie was in
charge then and there were crowds
of 500-600 people there. I was in
there screaming my lungs out as
the Dogs got pummeled.
I have never, ever in my life
missed either watching or listening
to a Georgia football game. Never
in 20 years. My dad graduated
from Georgia in the early 1970s
when things were less than com-

Jensen, who has lost only one sin
gles match in dual meets this year.
“My doubles has always been good,
but I thought if I can beat the top
singles players in the country in
doubles, I can beat them in singles
on a given day as well.”
In the^juniors, Jensen prevailed
mainly in doubles winning two
Orange Bowl world junior
championships with his current
partner A1 Parker. He also won 12
national doubles titles with va
rious other partners. With Parker
at Georgia, the two have won the
Southern Collegiate
Championship, reached the semifi
nals of the Volvo Tennis Collegiate
Championships, and have nailed
down the No. 1 doubles spot on the
team.
While the duo has posted some
serious results together, Parker
still cannot escape the silliness in
side Jensen.
“It’s definitley an experience
playing doubles with him,” Parker
said. “He’s not like anyone I’ve
been around in my life. He’s got a
way about him where he seems to
have a good time doing almost any
thing."
Is there a chance that perhaps
Jensen and Parker will dawn
matching visors at Georgia’s next
match when the two join together
at No. 1 doubles?
“I’m never wearing a visor!"
Parker said. “We may go as far as
wearing matching shirts but HI
never wear a visor."
But the visor which prevents
Jensen’s locks from flowing in front
of his eyes is not that sentimental.
“I may need to get a new one,”
Jensen said. This one may get a
little smelly after a while."

anyone else except our mom who
was watching the match."
The twins, who share a 1985
BMW, try to maintain different
identities on campus, but are glad
they were both able to choose the
university.
“One of the main reasons we
picked Georgia was so that we
could be together," Shawn says.
“We support each other in our
tennis, and if going to the same
school would’ve hurt our tennis we
wouldn’t have done it."
Shawn and Shannon both aspire
to play profesionally one day, and
would also like to play doubles to
gether again after college.
If her past achievements are any
indication, Shawn McCarthy will
one day achieve the fame she
seeks.
