Most college tennis teams
usually take advantage of spring
vacations to travel far and wide to
take on an extended number of
teams while players are not in
class.
Luckily for the third-ranked
Georgia men’s tennis team, coach
Manuel Diaz did not follow the
routes of others.
During the 10-day hiatus from
school, Diaz’s Dogs (13-1) played
only two matches: a 5-4 home vic
tory over Mississippi St. on March
25 and a 4-2 rain-suspended match
with No. 14 Texas in Austin on
March 29.
“We tried to pace our way
through our Spring Break,” Diaz
said. "It’s easy to peak too early
and we wanted to be ready for our
toughest part of schedule which
lays ahead."
In the coming weeks, Georgia
faces five Top 25 teams, including
important conference clashes with
No. 6 Tennessee in Knoxville, No.
10 Kentucky in Lexington and No.
12 LSU in Athens.
“In 1988, after we had a rough
spring break trip with the Blue-
Gray Team Championships, we
lost a few close matches at the be
ginning of spring quarter,” he said.
After playing four matches
during the 1988 break, Georgia
lost close conteststo Clemson 5-4,
Georgia Tech 5-4, Kentucky 6-3,
and LSU 5-4.
Much like the 1988 squad, the
1990 team is very short-handed
due to injuries. Diaz’s 1990 squad
hasfour less players than the
second-year Bulldog head coach ex
pected to compete for him. Fran
cisco Montana opted for the pro-
circuit, while Lander College
transfer Wade McGuire went down

for the year with a knee injury.
David Wolf, another transfer from
Old Dominion, was lost for the year
as well with a neck injury. Jack
Frierson, the 1989 SEC No. 6 sin
gles champion, has also left the
squad indefinitely for personal rea
sons.
The spring vacation also gave
Georgia much needed rest as every
team member was plagued with
some sort of nagging ir\jury.
‘The spring break helped us be
cause no one got hurt, and every
body has been healing,” senior
Mike Morrison said.
Added Diaz, 'The break worked
out perfect. We’ve been short-
handed and bent up and the break
gave us time to recuperate and
ready ourselves for the toughest
part of our schedule.”
NET NOTES
Back on track- After losing four
of his last seven matches Georgia’s
A1 Parker was back to his winning
ways, defeating Mississippi St.’s
Mihnea Nastase 6-4, 6-0 and
Texas’ Steve Bryan 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.
Nastase, ranked No. 37, is the
nephew of former Wimbledon and
U.S. Open champion Ilie Nastase,
while Bryan is the nation’s No. 2
ranked player.
New Rankings - In the latest
Volvo Tennis Collegiate Rankings,
Georgia remained at No. 3 in the
team rankings behind Stanford
and Cal-Berkeley. Parker re
mained at No. 3 in the singles
rankings behind Todd Martin of
Northwestern and Bryan of Texas.
Murphy Jensen entered the
rankings at No. 88.
David Wolf and Jack Frierson: Only two of four Netters to
