Dudes! Ninja turtles rockin’
By ANDREW LAWLER
Entertainment Writer
WARNING: THE REVIEW
BELOW IS THE WORK OF
SOMEONE WHO LOVES
COMIC BOOKS AND GOOD
CHOP-SAKI FILMS.
‘Teenage Mutant Nir\ja Tur
tles" is a great movie.
Great fun that is, although not
necessarily great cinema.
Fifteen years ago the pet rat of
a ninja master, wandering
through the sewers, discovered
four baby turtles in a radioactive
goo. The rat, known as Splinter,
rescued them. In the days that
followed, the group found them
selves growing both in size and
intelligence. The turtles learned
to speak (“pizza” was their first
word) and were taught the ways
of the ninja by Splinter. Now fif
teen years old, they have become
Raphael, Michealangelo, Leon
ardo and Donatello —The
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
The Turtles come to the rescue
of reporter April O’Neill (Judith
Hoag), whose investigations of a
city-wide crime wave have led
her to suspect that an ancient
nii\ja clan called “the Foot” is be
hind it. When “the Foot” and
their lender, Shredder (James
Saito), try to silence the intrepid
reporter, the turtles intervene.
The strength of 'TMNT” is
simple. It’s good clean fun that’s
laced with equal elements of up
beat sardonic humor, enter
taining characters and exciting,
well-filmed action scenes. The
Ninja turtles Nuclear characters come to life
story, while not overly complex,
is fast-paced and continuously in
teresting. The characters, espe
cially the turtles, are engaging
and fleshed out quite well.
The humor is that hip type of
wit seen on shows like “Moon
lighting.” An example is when
Raphael, newly recovered from a
vicious beating, is embraced by
Leonardo, who’s overjoyed to see
him alive. Just as the moment
could become sappy, Donatello
says from the door, ‘This is a
Kodak moment.”
Another time has the Turtles
ordering pizza and timing the de
livery guy. He’s two minutes late
so they deduct three dollars and
quote him the old ninja proverb,
‘To forgive is divine, but never
pay full price for late pizza
dude!!”
The turtles’ costumes, de
signed by Muppet-master Jim
Henson’s Creature Shop, are
quite impressive. People who
were amazed that Michael
Keaton could move in his
“Batman" suit will be slack-
jawed at the acrobatics the actors
perform in these very realistic
outfits. Computer-controlled
gears allow the turtles’ mouths to
mimic the motions of speech with
great skill.
The film lets down a bit to
wards the end. The excellent
pacing falters a bit, and the final
battle with the evil Shredder is a
bit too pedestrian. However, by
that time in, this extremely win
ning movie, it doesn’t really
matter. ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja
Turtles” is pure unadulterated
fun. COWABUNGA!!!!!

African-American play states facts
By MAURA CORRIGAN
Contributing Writer
A college education does not al
ways guarantee a person success
and money, and hard work does
not always bring the benefits one
deserves. In Judi Mason’s play
“Livin’ Fat,’’ the Cooper family dis
covers this fact of life and must
deal with it accordingly. The play
is the first main stage black show
in several years to be performed at
the University of Georgia.
“Livin’ Far is the story of an im
poverished southern black family
struggling to make ends meet. Al
though the mother works and the
father holds down two jobs, they
earn just enough money to get by.
David, the oldest child of the
family, played by sophomore
drama major K. Lorrel Manning,
has graduated from college but
can’t find a job. He takes a menial
position as a janitor at a local bank.
However, David soon comes across
$15,000 when he gets in the middle
of a bank robbery and secretly
picks up the cash that the robbers
had left behind.
From there, according to di
rector Thomas Ellis, assistant pro
fessor of drama specializing in
black theater, the play becomes “a
discussion on values, social com
mentary, religion, and pragma
tism.” The family becomes divided
over the issue of whether to keep
the money that fell into David’s
hands. The conflict is one of morals
and the poor family must decide
between the chance for a normal
lifestyle or returning the money to
the bank with the risk of getting
David in trouble.
Actor Manning describes the
‘Livin’ Fat’ plays April 4-15 in Fine Arts Building
play as very “truthful,” for it is set
in the 70s and portrays “a family
trying to get out of the ghetto.”
Manning sees nc wrong in David’s
taking the money and feels that
David is just trying to hold the
family together.
The cast for “Livin’ Fat” has
been working on the play for the
past four weeks. Manning is enthu
siastic about the all-black produc
tion. “We’re finally exposing others
to black theater and playwrights
who are just as good as the others
we study,” he said, The production
exposes people to the African-
American experience.”
Director Ellis is also excited
about the production, and with
Manning’s work. Ellis said that
Manning is doing well as an actor.
Ellis sees the production as an at
tribute to the university's African-
American program, and he thinks
the play will mark a “step in the di
rection cf establishing a black the
ater program.”
The Department of Drama’s
University Theater will be per
forming “Livin’ Fat” through April
15 in the Cellar Theater of the Fine
Arts Building. Performances will
be at 8 p.m April 6-7 and April 9-
14 and at 2:30 p.m. on April 8 and
April 15. Tickets are on sale at the
Fine Arts box office Monday
through Friday from noon until 5
cassette
Sale ends Tuesday, April 17.
