Kline heads ‘dead’ cast in new movie
By CARY DICRISTINA
Contributing Writer
One word describes the film “I
1/0vc You to Death:” disappointing.
If the thought that seeing a
movie with Kevin Kline (“A Fish
Called Wanda”), Tracey Ullman
(T.V.’s "Tracey Ullman show"),
William Hurt (The Accidental
Tourist”), and many others
sounded like it was a must-see,
you’re not alone. I was looking for
ward to Lawrence Kasdan’s (The
Big Chill," "Body Heat,” and The
Accidental Tourist”) latest effort.
Let’s face it — the guy can make a
movie. But this one is pretty weak.
Not that it doesn’t have its mo
ments (it has quite a few) but it’s
definitely not worth the price of full
admission.
The plot concerns a middle-aged
wife (Ullman) who realizes that

her husband (Kline), is being un
faithful. In fact, he averages about
seven infidelities a week; women
who range from Victoriu Jackson to
Phoebe Cates. But because Ullman
loves Kline so much, she decides
that it would be better to have him
dead than to divorce him and know
that he’s still running around.
That’s when the mother-in-law,
Joan Plowright, gets into the act.
She hires people to kill him, an
idea that fails. Then, she and Ul
lman give it a try. They fail as well.
They decide to involve Devo (River
Phoenix), whose puppy love for IH-
lman is about to be tested. And he
fails — sort of. When he can’t com
plete the dastardly act, he hires the
neighborhood drug addicts (Hurt
and Keanu Reeves) to finish him
off The plot would run smoothly if
it weren’t for Kline, he just won’t
die.
With a plot like this, you would
think that the film couldn’t fail. It’s
even based on a true story. But the
story just lies there. It never gets
as hysterical as it should. For ex
ample, the scene in which Hurt
and Reeves try to finish off Kline
seems to go on forever. The jokes
“I Love You to Death”: (front, I. to r.) River Phoenix,
Tracey Ullman, Kevin Kline (rear, I. to r.) Keanu Reeves,
William Hurt and Joan Plowright.
seem forced and ars not comical.
There are a couple of good one-
liners, but not enough to make this
scene flow any faster. Kline and
company try to liven it up ns much
as they can, but the effort comes off
half-cocked. Their performances
are the main core of the laughs.
“I Love You to Deuth" is not a
total washout. Far from it. It’s just
that considering the people in
volved, it should have been a laugh
riot instead of a movie with a
couple of one-liners. This movie
was made for video, or better yet,
the good ol’ Alps Cinema.
“Peaks” is tops

Twin Peaks” has been her
alded ns one of the most unusual
shows ever to hit the small
screen.
And it is. Fortunately it’s good
too.
Sunday night’s pilot saw the
discovery of the homecoming
queen, wrapped in plastic and
stone-cold dead. Her death
shocks the small Washington
town of Twin Peaks. Before the
dust from that has time to clear,
another teen-age girl wanders
out of the wilderness, with the re
mains of ropes dangling from her
wrists. The FBI is brought in as
things begin to get curiouser and
curiouser.
“Twin Peaks” has depth,
humor, intelligence, mystery and
action. Its pilot episode managed
both to establish a three-ring
circus of characters ranging from
Sheriff Harry S. Truman (presu
mably no relation) to the appro
priately named Log Lady (she
carries a log), as well as intro
duces a story as convoluted as it
T.V. REVIEW
is entertaining.
The biggest worry the network
must have had, was whether or
not director David Lynch’s ("Blue
Velvet”) often bizarre style would
be accessible to a TV” audience.
Except for a few rather bizarre
touches, such os a woman who
seems to scream forever, barking
high-schoolers, and of course the
aforementioned log lady, the
show is really quite normal and;
very entertaining. Lynch suc
ceeds in adding a depth and tex
ture that is quite rare for TV.
The best thing yet about this
show is Kyle Maclachlan’s
standout performance as an FBI
agent. His agent, who incessantly
dictates into a small recorder
every trivial little fact, seems to
stare in childlike wonder at the
world of Twin Peaks However, at
the same time, he doesn’t ever
miss a clue, even if it’s as small as
the reflection of a motorcycle in a
girl’s eye seen on a videotape.
Twin Peaks” has a chance to
be one of TV’s best.
