Clemson tennis conch Chuck
Kriese doesn’t want any hums on
his tennis team.
He’s used to winning
championships and knows it takes
a lot of work.
“I don’t have any bums on the
team because they won’t hang
around. The work is too hard," said
Kriese, who has won nine ACC ti
tles while at Clemson.
It is the 15-year coach’s condi
tioning philosophy which hits made
the Clemson Tiger tennis program
one of the nation’s best.
Kriese and his Tiger tennis team
will renew one of the nation’s
greatest college tennis rivalries as

-Chuck Kriese
Clemson tennis coach
Clemson (13-15) and No. 3 Georgia
(15-2) clash at Henry Field Sta
dium today at 2 p.m.
■‘We have to play our very best to
beat a tough Clemson team,”
Georgia conch Manuel Diaz said.
"It should be an interesting
match.”
“Clemson and Georgia is the
type of match that college sports is
all about,” Kriese said. M It’s a great
event. It’s always rough to play at
Georgia and we’re going to have to
play our very, very best to compete
with them."
Kriese is not at all indifferent to
making players play their very
best.
The author of a motivation and
coaching technique book, Total
Tennis Training, Kriese expects
his players to give 100 percent, 100
percent of the time.
“I want players to reach their
full potential," Kriese said. “I want
to help players train for profes
sional careers. I want them to work
hard and to have strong work
habits."
Kriese’s on-court accomplish
ments have sometimes been over
shadowed by tirades of frustration
and reprimands by the NCAA
during the Nationals for blasting
out against how the tournament
has been run.
In last year’s NCAA Tourna
ment, Kriese spoke out against the

Kriese could not be reached for
further comment, but North Caro
lina tennis coach Allen Morris,
whose team upset Clemson 5-4 last
Sunday, stated that although he
has heard of the stories regarding
Kriese’s comments and actions he
has never witnessed any.
“My experiences when we play
him is that he never got out of
hand,” Morris said. “He’s a very
strong competitor and he requires
his players to be very competitive.
Although I’ve heard various things
through the grapevine, he’s always
been kind and nice when we play
him.”

People who have been waiting
for the in-etate clash between
Baeeball America’* lOth-ranked
Georgia baseball team (30-7) and
the 13th-ranked Georgia Tech
Yellow Jacket* (28-9) laat night
had to hold out one more day.
In the span of about ten min
utes, Chandler Field looked like
part of the Chattahoochee after
torrential raine forced the teams
to cancel the conteet.
The two teams will meet at
Foley Field today at 3:30 p.m.
According to the Georgia Sporte
Information Department, the
rained-out game will be made up
at a later date.
The rainout givea the Yellow
Jacket! a chance to think.
Since Tech earned Baseball
America's number one ranking
March 10, the squad has dropped
eight of 13 and stands fourth in
the ACC at 3-3.
Still, a team doesn’t work its
way to the top of a national poll
without a solid backbone.
The Jackets are batting .311 as
a team and have gotten 11
homers from infielder Anthony
Maisano (.307). Outfielder
Darren Bragg is batting a team
leading .446 and haa started all
37 of Tech’e games.
In addition, the team boast* a
3.02 ERA, .49 points higher than
that of the Georgia team. Left
hander Doug Creek, who pitched
with Georgia pitcher Dave
Fleming on Team USA this past
summer, has a team low 2.10
ERA and a team high four com
plete games.
This is the first time this
season that the Diamond Dogs
have been ranked higher than
Tech.
This past weekend, the Dogs
needed two eigth-inning rallies -
the team hit three homers in that
span - to avoid falling to Ten
nessee.
As a team Georgia is batting
.316 and is first in the SEC with
51 home runs in 37 games. Last
season Georgia hit only 48 total.
Designated hitter Brian
Jester, who has missed over a
month with a pulled hamstring
but was scheduled to start
Tuesday night’s game, leads the
team with a .411 batting average.
Right fielder Bruce Chick (.310)
is Georgia’s front runner in
homers with eight.
