UGA Netters, Lady Netters cruise to straight-set victories
Netters blow past Lady Netters sweep GT
‘brain dead’ Tigers

Georgia netter Murphy Jensen
claimed he suffered from a “brain
cramp” at No. 6 singles Wednesday
at Henry Feild Stadium.
But it was the Clemson tennis
team that was brain-dead as Jen
sen’s 6-0, 1 -6, 6-1 victory over the
Tigers’ J.L. Guillou clinched a 6-0
Georgia drubbing of Clemson.
After blanking Guillou 6-0 in the
first set, Jensen dropped the
second set just as convincingly.
"I let up a little bit and gave him
a sniff of victory," said Jensen of
the second set. ‘‘I had a brain
cramp, but 1 pulled a no-brainer in
the tnird set. 1 didn’t think about
winning or losing, I just played.”
Jensen faced game-point against
him in every game of the third set
and came back from 40-0 twice in
the final set.
The match looked lopsided, but
it could have been really close.”
Georgia assistant coach Nick
Stutsman said.
At No. 1 singles, A1 Parker over
came a frustrating, no-pace
strategy by Clemson’s Owen
Casey, besting the Tiger 6-4, 6-3.
Casey, a Davis Cup player for
Ireland, consistently fed Parker
softly-hit backhand slices frus
trating the nation’s No. 4 player.
“I got sick of pushing the ball
and dinking it back,” Parker said.
“I wanted to hit out and come to
net to end the points quicker.”
Parker was successful on 13 of
18 approaches to the net in the
second set, while breaking Casey’s
serve three times in the second sot.

Whenever the Lady Netters face Georgia Tech, they bring their
brooms.
For the fifth straight year, the Georgia women’s tennis team swept
the Lady Jackets. The score in Atlnnta Wednesday: 6-0.
“Although Tech is not ranked, as most of our opponents have been, I
still think this was a big win for us,” Georgia coach Jeff Wallace said
The only snag encountered by the Lady Netters occurred at No. 1 sin
gles, where Shannon McCarthy was stretched to three sets by Leigh Rob
erts 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Stacey Schefilin won at No. 2 singles over Kristy Kottich <6-2, 6-4) in a
rematch of a Dec. 10 exhibition, also won by Schefilin.
Also winnining for Georgia were Caryn Moss at No. 3, Jill Waldman
at No. 4, Shawn McCarthy at No. 5, and Tonya Bogdonas at No. 6.
Carter realizes her dream;
signs with Lander’s Dogs
coach Andy Landers. “I’ve always
wanted to play for the Lady Dogs
every since I was a little girl.”
With her performance in high
school, Carter made sure a college
career was in the offing.
The 6-foot shooting guard from
Atlanta, named The Atlanta
Journal-Constitution All-Classifi
cation Player of the Year, averaged
30 points and 14 rebounds a game
this season in leading Crim High to
a 29-1 record and the Class AA
championship game. She was also
named First-Team All-American
by Parade.
These credentials and her height
will enable her to play two posi
tions for the Lady Dogs, according
to Landers.
“Deborah is very versatile,” said
Landers. “She has outstanding size
for a perimeter player and can play
either guard or forward. She will
have an immediate impact.”
Landers indicated that no other
spring signings are expected
within the week.
