picked up eighth victory.

After the lOth-ranked Georgia
baseball team’s win over Ten
nessee Sunday, coach Webber ex
pressed concern about how his
team would react offensively
against the 13th-ranked Georgia
Tech Yellow Jackets this week.
Evidently, he forgot about Bruce
Chick and Terry Childers.
The Diamond Dogs had let a
four-run lead slip away Wednesday
afternoon against the Jackets and
went into the bottom of the seventh
inning tied at seven. After Doug
Radziewicz blooped a single to left,
Tech reliever Joe Wise tossed
Childers a fastball and suddenly
the Dogs were up 9-7. The Dogs
held on to win 9-8 and improve
their overall record to 31-7 (.815).
“It was a hard-thrown fastball
that I hit,” Childers said about his
homerun. “I used to play agaisnt
Joe (Wise; in high school. Actually,
I think that’s probably the first hit
I’ve ever gotten ofThim.”
The Diamond Dogs were able to
build a solid lead early with the
help of right fielder Bruce Chick’s
bat.
With Georgia up by one run in
the third inning and Diamond Dog
pitcher Matt Hoitsma shaky in the
early going, Chick jacked his team-
leading ninth homer, a two-run
shot, 400 feet over the left-field
wall to give Georgia a 6-2 lead ofT
Tech starter Doug Creek.
“I was just up there trying to hit
what they threw me today. Chick
said. *This time 1 was fortunate
enough to hit a good pitch for my
home run. It was an extremely
well-placed change up and actu
ally, I was leaning a bit. I guess I’m
surprised that we were able to hit
sucn a good pitcher like Creek, but,
afterall, we are a good hitting ball
club.*
Creek was 7-1 and had a 2.10
ERA coming in to Athens and is
considered one of the best pitchers
in the ACC. The Dogs roughed up
the former Team USA pitcher for
six runs and forced Tech coach Jim
Morris to yank him in favor of
Wise.
“Am I surprised that we were
able to hit Creek?" Webber said.

tory over Georgia Tech at Foley Field
“As you know, I’m never surprised
about anything. Both of today’s
starters were under stress because
they warmed up a lot before yester
day's rainout. For them to have to
go through the same routine again
today is very trying.”
Even with his bat’s early pop,
Chick wasn’t finished. The Florida
native knocked in third baseman
Jeff Cooper with a double off the
right-field wall just out of the reach
of a diving Tom Green in the fourth
inning to give Georgia a 7-3 lead.
“I’ve been surprised about how
I’ve been able to hit with power,”
Chick said. “But seriously, I don’t
try to hit home runs. I really just
want to make g<x>d contact.”

Although Georgia held a respect

game, the Jackets wouldn’t fall.
Catcher Jon Anderson (.256) belted
a three-run shot off Georgia
pitcher Tracy Wildes to left-center

Maisano corked a solo shot off
Mike Rebhan, who picked up his

In the words of its captain, the
frisbee club at Georgia is the “ul
timate."
In fact, the club name carries
Sam Beilin’s sentiments; its offi
cial title ie the University of
Georgia Ultimate Friebee Club.
And if the club's performance
in a tournament last weekend in
Nashville is any indication, the
club is good, if not the “ultimate."
Pitted against 16 other teams
from across the Southeast and
Midwest, the Georgia squad won
six of seven contests en route to a
third-place finish in the Nash
ville Canyons of Monkey Tourna
ment.
With the exception of a 18-13
trimming of the Cincinnati
squad, the Disc Dogs waltzed
through the preliminary rounds
Saturday. The seven-man team
defeated the Lexington, Ky.,
Nashville and Huntsville, Ala.,
teams by a combined 39-19 score.
The Disc Dogs continued their
march to the semifinals Sunday
with decisive victories over Chat
tanooga, Tenn., and Springfield,
Mo. But with the eeminnal berth
came a match against Chicago, a
perennial frisbee powerhouse.
The Dogs bowed out to the
Bears of Frisbee 18-9, but played
admirably, according to their
captain.
“We played them much better
than the score indicated," said
Beilin. “Last year, we finished 0-
4 in this tourney, but we really
busted our butts this year and it
paid off.”
EDITOR'S NOTE: Ultimate
Friebee — espoused as a fast-
pace, non contact sport — plays
much like the friebee football
played on playgrounds, only it'e
more official. Two seven-member
teams compete to reach their re
spective end zones by passing the
disc from teammate to teammate.
One point ie awarded for each
successful end tone pass; the first
team with IS points wins.
