Vicious racial harassment
Emory student devastated
The Associated Press
ATLANTA — An apparent cam
paign of racial harassment against
an Emory pre-med student, which
left the co-ed hospitalized and un
able to speak, is being reviewed by
state authorities who may join the
investigation.
“It’s at a preliminary stage.
That’s likely to change,” Georgia
Bureau of Investigation
spokesman John Bankhead said
Thursday, adding that Emory au
thorities sought the GBI’s help on
Wednesday.
Sabrina Collins, 18, of Heph-
zibah, entered a hospital Tuesday,
then transferred Wednesday to the
Medical College of Georgia Hos
pital in Augusta, which is near her
hometown. Family members, class
mates and school officials said the
month-long series of incidents
turned the outgoing young woman
into a withdrawn, frightened
person.
Collins has not spoken since
fainting Tuesday when she re
turned to her dormitory room to
find a racist slur scrawled on the
floor, said her grandmother, Flo
re tta George.
George came to Atlanta
Wednesday to take her grand
daughter home.
“She was drawn up kind of fetal,
clenching onto her blanket, fid
dling with her blanket, looking
wild-eyed,” Ms. George said.
Ms. Collins, who shared her
dorm room with a white student,
received the first threat on March
5, according to Ms. George.
“She was out about 20 minutes
and the pictures on the wall were
broken, Clorox was poured on the
clothes, there were mutilated
stuffed animals, and the phrase
‘nigger, hang* was written on the
wall in the closet,” Ms. George
said.
‘They were very careful to put it
on Sabrina’s side of the room,” she
said.
Subsequent incidents have in
cluded typed death threats, be
headed dolls and pieces from her
bra sent to Ms. Collins, according
to Ms. George.
Ed Medlin, Emory’s director of
public safety, said uniformed and
plainclothes campus police have
patrolled the dorm floor since the
first incident was reported, but the
culprit has not been spotted.
He said a portable alarm, with a
panic button and motion detector,
was installed in Collins’ room after
the first incident, but it was dis
armed. Medlin added that finger
prints have been taken from
several people in the residence hall
to compare them to prints in Ms.
Collins’ room.
Because of the number of people
who congregate in dormitories,
however, “there are legitimate rea
sons why a set of prints would ap
pear on an object,” Medlin said.
Julianne Daffin, associate dean
of the Division of Campus Life at
Emory, said the school would pay
for Ms. Collins’ medical treatment
and officials would try to persuade
her to return to Emory.
State Hep. Frank Redding, D-
Decatur, said he was dissatisfied
with the way campus police have
handled the case.
“We are concerned that this
thing would be allowed to go on for
a month before the university did
anything about it,” said Redding,
who is black.

comprehensive.” -Los Angeles Times
