SOUND
Jody Grind is plain delightful
By NOEL MURRAY
Contributing Writer
The Jody Grind is a troublesome, troublesome
band. They make me worry.
I worry if their hybrid of standards, blues, country
and early 60s pop is a fair substitute for the real
stuff. I feel guilty that rather than listening to their
first release on db Records “One Man’s Trash is An
other Man’s Treasure,” I should be mining the backs
of record stores for a taste of the genuine thing, un
less of course, The Jody Grind is somehow the gen
uine thing.
The point is, it doesn’t matter whether The Jody
Grind is “real” or not. They are original all on their
own. The best word to describe them, beyond all the
genre labels, is just plain delightful. If you’ve seen
one of their smoldering live shows, you know what I
mean. Rarely have I seen anyone leave the club un
satisfied.
That being so, given all the time I’ve spent at Jody
Grind shows it is difficult for me to be objective, but
here it is, nonetheless — “One Man’s Trash is An
other Man’s Treasure” is wonderful. As a longtime
fan, the only disappointments I experienced were a
muffled drum sound and an incoherent running
order which lacks momentum. However, with CD
technology, the listener can choose their own run
ning order. Regardless of the drums, the songs are
still quite fine. Covers such as “Peter Gunn” (with ly
rics!), “Mood Indigo”, and “Wishin’ and Hopin”
greatly expand upon their original versions. Even
better are The Jody Grind’s own original hybrids,
particularly “Florida Maine” and “Eight-Ball”.
Run out and support a great local band with a
chance at national exposure (they’ve already been on
MTV ... for eight seconds) before they become leg
endary. They may or may not be the genuine article,
but they put on a good snow regardless.

Jody Grind: new release is the ‘real’ thing
By DEV JARRETT
Contributing Writer
The world’s most well-known
reggae band, The Wailers, will play
this afternoon at Legion Field tor a
Leukemia benefit concert spon
sored by Tau Epsilon Phi frater
nity. Monty Montgomery opens the
show for them.
The Wailers are probably best
known as the band that backed
Bob Marley, but they have estab
lished themselves as a tight band
without having to cash in on their
legendary front-man’s name. Some
believe the band’s vocals suffer
without Marley because no one can
duplicate the mystical intensity
and passionate delivery of their
former leader. However, the reggae
spirit is kept alive through the
sheer force of the Wailers’ expert
playing.
Although composed mainly of
members of the original Wailers,
the band’s drummer is Michael
Richards, ex-member of Jimmy
Cliffs band. Other percussions are
manned by Irvin “Carrot” Jarrett,
an ex-member of Third World. A1
Anderson and Donald “Junior
Marvin” Kerr both sing and play
guitar and are original Wailers.

The Wailers have been crankin^
out their mellow, solidly rhythmic
reggae for twenty-one years, with
some of the members leaving to do
solo work or to work with other
groups, but most of the members
ultimately returned. The music
and lyrics blend together in a spiri
tually uplifting way to help the
Wailers’ audience find inner peace
and inner rhythm.
Irvin “Carrot” Jarrett claims
that, “the drum means life with a
rhythm, and is for everyone to find
his naturally, then harmonize it
with his natural existence.”
Everyone is encouraged to don
his red, yellow and green and at
tend the concert. Tickets are $6 for
UGA students, and $8 for all
others, available at Wuxtry Re
cords and Tau Epsilon Phi frater
nity house.
