Three bands to play
benefit at Rockfish
By RACHEL CURRY
Contributing Writer
Lonesome No More, Doubts
Even Here and The Violets are
playing at the Rockfish Tuesday,
April 17 to raise money for Foun
tainhead, a local literary mag
azine. The show starts around
9:30 p.m. ($3).
Ir. a town like Athens, publica
tions such as Classic City Live
and Flagpole are vital for gar
nering entertainment knowledge.
This past February, another such
magazine hit Athens. However,
this one will not tell you who is
playing The Georgia Theatre or
how much pitchers are at The
Night Owl Lounge. This one is a
guide for poets and writers.
The magazine, called Foun
tainhead, is co-edited by univer
sity English graduate Lori Hylan
and sophomore English major
Wendy Bergoffen. It lists literary
goings-on about town and spot
lights one or two writers in each
issue.
“We like to focus on lesser-
known writers so they can get
some exposure,” said Hylan.
Fountainhead also provides
schedules for readings at The
Downstairs Cafe and Park Hall
and will do the same for The Grit
when it reopens.
“It’s really exciting. It seems
like people are going out to see
poetry readings more and more,”
said Hylan.
The magazine is printed on

high quality paper and is there
fore costly to produce. Since the
magazine is ottered for a meager
50 cents, the people at Fountain
head have found themselves in a
financial ink well.
So when writer David Fer
guson, also the singer from Lone
some No More, suggested to
Hylan that they do a benefit for
the magazine, she put the wheels
in motion.
The result is a show at the
Rockfish Palace on Tuesday,
April 17. Lonesome No More will
be playing, as will Doubts Even
Here and The Violets.
David Ferguson was not avail
able for comment, but his band-
mate, guitarist Peter Linz,
offered some insight into how Lo
nesome No More feels about
helping Fountainhead out.
“We’re showing our support for
the people at Fountainhead be
cause it is an important mag
azine in a town like Athens
where there is so much artistic
expression taking place in such
mass quantities,” said Linz.
Lori Hylan and the folks at
Fountainhead hope this support
will get them out of the hole.
“We just want to break even —
that’s our goal,” she said.
Loey Nelson’s music as romantic as her story
By RACHEL CURRY
Contributing Writer
Loey Nelson’s introduction into
the world of record making was al
most like a fairv tale. After a per
formance at a New York country
pub one evening, a man ap
proached the young singer-song
writer bearing an envelope filled
with money. The stranger claimed
that Nelson’s music had brought
new hope to his life and turned him
from a desperate suicide attempt.
He urged her to take the money
and make a record.
Nelson didn’t need much more
encouragement than that.
Working as a hairdresser while
trying to make it in the club scenes
of New York wasn’t her cup of tea.
She used the generous gift to as
semble some artist friends and
make a demo. This led to her debut
album, “Venus Kissed the Moon.”
It’s true that Nelson is not a
unique entity in the music busi
ness. For the past few years, the
American public has been bom
barded with an army of young, tal
ented female musicians with
acoustic guitars. Acts like k.d.
ALBUM REVIEW
lang, Melissa Etheridge, The In
digo Girls, and Tracy Chapman
have made a distinct mark on rock,
possibly leaving little room for up
and coming young women who play
the same type of music.
Still, Nelson has a lot going for
her. Her style is fresh. Her influ
ences include Fleetwood Mac and
Cat Stevens, so she often crosses
over from rock to country. The
songs she writes are whimsical and
fun with a touch of mystical coun
try/blues thrown in.
Besides her praiseworthy song
writing, Nelson does well in the
vocal area also. She has a lovely,
innocent voice. On “Morning
Glory,” the album’s opening track,
Nelson brings back memories of
Ann Wilson’s voice when Heart
was wearing more clothes and less
hairspray. This is definitely the
strongest song on the album
“Railroad Track” is a jaunty se
lection for which Nelson steals the
chorus from Patsy Cline’s monster
hit, “Sweet Dreams” and does a
Loey Nelson: not just another female acoustic act
fairly respectable imitation of the
legend’s vocal style.
Other winning tunes include
“East of the Sun,” a sentimental
fantasy song (great for the kids)
and a beautiful, dreamy tune
called "Angels.”
"Venus Kissed the Moon” is a re
freshing change from hyped-up
rock and it’s a very strong debut ef
fort. This album is pure and simple
enjoyment.
