‘Bazebawl’ a language everybody understands
It isn’t such a small world after all.
Imagine, someone who has never heard of
Bo Jackson. Imagine Ryota Tezuka of Japan.
Ryota (pronounced YOTA as in To*yota), a
Toyko Science University transfer, moved four
doors down from me in Russell this spring.
Hardly a word had been passed Detween
myself and Ryota in those first two weeks, but
when he found me watching “bazebawl,” as he
called it, a commonality was found.
“Bazebawl,” Rvota asked of me as I lay
watching the Reds-Braves game Monday.
“Yes,” I answered loudly as if he was deaf
instead of a foreigner.
“Mfyor League Baseball,” I said carefully,
peering closely into his eyes for the slightest
bit of understanding.
“Yes, yes,” he said, shaking his head vigor
ously. “Bob Homer.”
Of course, he would know Horner, the
former Brave, who became a cult hero in
Japan after playing there for a year. Now we
Trevor
Padgett
?
were speaking the same language.
We proceeded to discuss (in fragments and
gestures of course) the playoff system of the
American bazebawl, which proved difficult.
‘The American League and the National
League do not play each other until the World
Series,” I said slowly.
“No understand," he interrupted. “Show,”
he said pointing to the cinder-block wall.
“OK, this is the American League West and
American League East,” I said pointing to
blocks side-by-side. On the two blocks below, I
did likewise for the National League.
“Divisions?" he inquired.
“Yes,” I answered, delighted with my new
found prowess as an interpreter.
I began the playoff discussion by pointing
out that the top left cinder block (AL East)
plays the top right cinder block (AL West) and
the bottom left block (NL East) plays the
bottom right block (NL West). Then I demon
strated the World Series by having the win
ning top block play the winning bottom block.
Confused? Well, somehow Ryota grasped it
responding with his now-patented “yes, yes.”
Now that I’ve had time to reflect on our dis
cussion, I realize that I found out much more
about Ryota than just his affinity for baze
bawl.
I discovered he is not so different. But more
importantly, I discovered a friend.
Maybe it is a small world after all.

Countdown to
Corvallis Journal
The third-seeded Georgia gym
nastics left for the NCAA
championships in Corvallis, Ore.,
Tuesday after cranking out a solid
192 in an intersquad meet judged
by coach Suzanne Yoculan and
staff — the toughest, most critical
judges in the country.
My plane to Trailblazer land
leaves today and after landing in
Portland, 111 join the team late to
night.
What do I expect to see in the de
fending national champions when I
arrive? A team that’s not overconfi
dent for starters. If the Gym Dogs
are to repeat last year’s perfor
mance, that attitude may be a de
termining factor.
The team has sometimes
showna tendency to become com
placent. Yoculan is determined to
prevent that from happening at na
tionals.
She has said publically that her
Lady Dogs aren’t the most talented
bunch of collegiate gymnasts in the
land. The candid coach genuinely
believes that’s the truth, and she
isn’t simply puffing up a smoke
screen so Georgia can shield itself
from the pressure.
Utah and Alabama, the first and
second seeded teams, respectively,
are better.
The Utes beat the Crimson Tide
and Alabama twice beat Georgia
this season.
Utah features a slimmed down
sophomore named Missy Marlowe,
among others. After competing for
the United States Olympic Team in
Seoul, Korea, in 1988, the slightlv
out-of-shape and mentally bumed-
out Marlowe joined the Utah squad
and had a respectable season.
Marlowe dropped some pounds
in the off season, a la Dennis Scott,
and got her enthusiasm back.
Alabama recruited a freshman
sensation named Dee Dee Foster to
compliment the stellar all-around
work of Marie Robbins. They’ve
played a big role in putting ‘Bama
in the second slot.
The Gym Dogs know how good
Utah and Alabama are, not to men
tion the other three teams in the
Super Six.
That means they'll have to scrap
hard for another NCAA ring.
The/11 have to go 24 for 24,
sticking under pressure while
other teams crack.
Chris Lancette, The Red and
Black sports writer you have come
to know and love, has covered the
Georgia gymnastics team for the
past three seasons.
Is it fall yet?

tice in preparation for Saturday's G-Day game. See the game preview
