Diamond Dogs knock off Catamounts by one
J.R. Showalter of the Diamond Dogs
By ERIC GARBER
Sports Writer
Apparently Western Carolina
didn’t realize it was playing a
Georgia baseball team Tuesday af
ternoon that had won 10 straight
and was ranked fifth in the nation.
The Diamond Dogs, after squan
dering an early 6-0 lead because of
shaky pitching, found themselves
tied with the Catamounts 9-9 going
into the bottom of the seventh.
Second baseman Joey Alfonso
led off the seventh by beating out a
bunt down the third-base line. One
out later, after Alfonso had made it
to third on two Jeff Graham wild
pitches, Jeff Cooper (.310) slapped
a single to left that scored Alfonso
and gave Georgia its first lead
since the first inning 10-9. Georgia
picked up two more in the the in
ning and went on to win 12-11, im
proving its record to 35-7. The
Dogs lead the SEC with a 12-3 re
cord .
“I was just trying to put the ball
in piny.” Cooper said. “As a matter
of fact, I was looking fastball all the
way. He (reliever Doug Uzdilla)
threw me a change-up that had me
out in front. Fortunately I was able
to get enough of it to knock in the
run."
Designated hitter Brian Jester
(.410), on his 23rd birthday, helped
the Dogs jump out to a first-inning
lead. With the bases loaded and no
outs, Jester went the other way on
a Steve Allison slider and knocked
a grandslam, his SEC-leading 11th
home run, over the right-field wall
to give the Dogs a 4-0 lead. Georgia
went on to score six in the inning.
“After we scored all those runs
in the first inning, (Georgia) Coach
Webber came into the dugout and
said, Hey guvs, this game is no
where near being over’,” Jester
said. “We’ve played Western Caro
lina every year since I’ve played
here and we knew they were ca
pable of coming back.”
That turned out to be quite an
understatement as WCU (30-21)
picked up eight runs, all with two
outs, in the top of the second to
take a lead that it would not relin
quish until Cooper’s hit.
After Rob Doherty and Matt Ra
leigh grounded out to lead off the
inning, nine straight Catamount
batters reached base off Georgia
starter Tom Zdanowicz (4-0) on
seven hits and two walks to power
the rally.
"I never like it when one of our
pitchers goes in there and gives up
eight runs," coach Steve Webber
said. “Western Carolina was not to
be taken lightly."
Ray Kirschner (2.34) pitched the
game’s last two and two-thirds in
nings to earn his fourth win
against no losses. Uzdilla (1-3)
picked up the loss.
The Dogs host WCU again at
3:30 p.m. today.
New ‘Dynamic Duo’ is
a natural tennis pair
By RANDY WALKER
Sports Writer
Near the end of the 1989
season, Georgia women’s tennis
coach Jeff Wallace decided to
break up the sibling doubles pair
of Shannon and Shawn Mc
Carthy. Instead he placed
Shannon with another hard-hit
ting player, Stacey Schefflin.
In the latest Volvo Tennis col
legiate rankings released
Tuesday, Wallace’s wisdom was
reflected as the McCarthy-Schef-
flin tandem sat atop the women’s
doubles rankings.
The new top-ranked duo will
probably see action Wednesday
as the Lady Netters take on Au
burn at 2 p.m. at the McWhorter
Courts.
“Our games really complement
each other," said McCarthy who
plays the backhand court.
McCarthy and Schefflin moved
up from the No. 3 position, leap
frogging the former No. 1 team of
Susan Gilchrist and Joanna
Plautz of Texas, and Teri Whit-
linger and Meredith McGrath of
Stanford.
The duo has posted a 17-3 re
cord and has won 11 of their last
12 matches. McCarthy and
Schefflin reached the finals of the
Riveria All-American
Championships, but fell in the fi
nals to Whitlinger and McGrath.
At the Rolex National Indoor
Championships, they fell victim
to the eventual champions, Gil
christ and Plnutz in the semifi
nals.
NET NOTESiThe Georgia
women's team moved into a tie
for the No. 4 ranking with DSC
after dropping to No. 5 in the last
poll.
Shannon McCarthy dropped
from her No. 3 perch to No. 6
while Stacey Schefflin dropped
from No. 8 to No. 9. Caryn Moss
also dropped a notch to No. 14.
Jill Waldman remained ranked
at No. 30, while Shawn Mc
Carthy dropped from No. 66 into
a tie for No. 78 with Florida’s Ju
lian Alexander. The other
Georgia doubles team ranked is
Moss and Waldman at No. 30

Netters drop in latest
Volvo Tennis rankings
By RANDY WALKER
Sports Writer
The Georgia men’s tennis team
dropped from No. 3 to No. 5 in the
latest Volvo Tennis collegiate
rankings released Tuesday. Mon
days loss to Tennessee was not re
flected in the ranking.
Georgia’s top netter, A1 Parker
remained the No. 4 ranked singles
player, while Patricio Arnold en
tered the rankings at No. 75.
The duo of Parker and Murphy
Jensen, losers in their last four un
suspended matches, dropped from
No. 8 to No. 10.
“I’m not that concerned about
the rankings, I’m just concerned
about getting our guys healthy and
preparing them for what now is the
most important match of the
season against LSU Saturday,”
Georgia coach Manuel Diaz said.
LSU, which plays Georgia on
Saturday at 2 p.m. at Henry Feild
Stadium, dropped from No. 10 to
No. 11 in the rankings.
