Women’s Golf
Cain going home
By TREVOR PADGETT
Sports Editor
Anne Cain returns home to
Tarheel Country this weekend,
but she won’t be wearing Caro
lina Blue.
The senior member of the
Georgia women’s golf team will
be wearing red and black as she
leads the No. 7 Lady Dogs into
the Woodbridge Collegiate Tour
nament at Kings Mountain, N.C.
“It’s going to be a nice feeling
being close to home,” said Cain,
whose hometown, Matthews, is
an hour’s drive from the Wood-
bridge course. “I’m really looking
forward to it."
Cain has good reason to be ex
cited — she is coming off her first
collegiate win.
Cain won the South Carolina
Invitational March 25 with a
three-day total of 225 to lead the
Lady Dogs to the team title. In
addition, she has been the team’s
top finisher in the last four tour
naments.
Despite her recent success,
Cain keeps things in perspective.
“I feel good about my game,”
said Cain. “But in golf, things
change so quickly."
The Lady Dogs found out about
the abruptness of golf the hard
way during the fall season.
Following victories in its first
two tourneys, the team carried
the No. 1 ranking into the UCLA
Desert Classic in November. But
an eighth-place finish in Palm
Springs dropped the Lady Dogs
to No. 4.
A winless winter, in which the
team’s highest finish was fifth,
didn’t help the team’s rankings
either, as it slipped to No. 10. But
the South Carolina Invitational
win moved the Lady Dogs back to
No. 7 in the Golf Coaches Asso
ciation of America poll.

Much like her senior leader,
coach Beans Kelly also keeps
things in perspective.
“It was fun being ranked No.
1," said Kelly. “But you have to
realize it’s a purely objective
ranking system based on a team’s
score.
“We just happened to get off to
a fast start," added Kelly. “As
young as we are, I’m very satis
fied with our No. 7 ranking.”
And for good reason. The top
14 teams, as determined by the
rankings, receive a bid to the
NCAA women’s golf tournament
to be held May 23-26 on Hilton
Head Island. Three at-large
berths are also awarded.
But before the NCAAs, the
Lady Dogs must tackle the Wood-
bridge Golf Club.
‘Woodbridge is a golf course
suited to everyone on our team,”
said Kelly. “I think we will pro
duce some good scores.”

Jill Waldman: No. 4 singles wins sets 6-2, 7-5
By RANDY WALKER
Sports Writer
Jill Waldman likes to hit a lot of
groundstrokes, and play behind
the baseline — seven feet behind
the baseline.
Waldman’s loopy, topspin
groundstrokes, from far behind the
baseline frustrated and eventually
wore down Monica Rey 6-2, 7-5 at
No. 4 singles to pace the No. 4
Georgia women’s tennis team (19-
2) to a 6-0 shutout of Auburn (9-10)
Wednesday.
Waldman didn’t play very
“Waldman-like” at the start of the
second set as the Georgia senior,
known for her consistency, quickly
saw herself down 4-1 with a flurry
of unforced errors.
“I was going for a lot of my shots
and I missed and got frustrated,”
the softly spoken Waldman said.
‘That’s just a part of tennis and
you’ve just got to overcome that.
Waldman made 11 unforced
backhand errors and 6 unforced
forehand errors in the second set,
but made only two errors after tra
iling 4-1.
“When I was down 4-1,1 just re
alized that I had to get the ball in
play and I began to play a lot better
when I was down,” Waldman said.
Rey served for the second set at
5-3, but Waldman, the two-time
SEC No. 5 singles champion, out-
steadied and out-nerved the Vigo,
Spain native winning the last four
games of the match.
Waldman and Rey often found
themselves exchanging grounds
trokes inches from their respective
back fences, before the Bulldog se
nior would rush net off a lofty re
turn from her opponent and finish
off the points with volleys and
overheads.
“I 've been working a lot on
coming to net. I’m not a serve-and-
volleyer so I like to hit my grounds
trokes deep, then when I know I
can hit the volley, I come in,"
Waldman said.
“It’s a good play for Jill," said
Georgia coach Jeff Wallace of
Waldman’s sneak-in strategy. “A
lot of times she tries to find ways to
end the points. Generally, the way
she wins her points is when the
other person misses.”
With depth being one of the cru
cial attributes of a winning pro
gram, Waldman’s success at No. 4
singles has been one of the major
keys to the Lady Netters’ success
this season.
“Depth is very important be
cause every school has a good No. 1
and No. 2 player," said Waldman
who has posted a 26-5 singles re
cord this season. “You sometimes
can’t count 100 percent on your No.
1 and No. 2 players to win. You
have to count on the bottom of the
line-up to come through too. With
the Top 5 schools, at Nos 4, 5, 6,
whoever plays the best on that
given day is gonna win the match.”
“Our depth is going to be very
important,” Wallace said."You
can’t say it’s any more important
than Nos 1,2,3. They are all impor
tant and everybody’s got to go out
and give a great effort.”
Waldman and fellow senior
Stacey Schefflin, a 6-0, 6-0 winner
at No. 2 singles Wednesday, will
make their last home appearances
this Sunday at noon when the Lady
Netters take on No. 12 Tennessee.
