Diamond Dogs blast
Catamounts at Foley
By ERIC GARBER
Sports Writer
After Monday’s practice,
pitcher Tracy Wilaes said he felt
the Georgia baseball team was on
n mission. Wednesday afternoon
against Western Carolina at
Foley Field, his teammates didn’t
let him down.
The fifth-ranked Diamond
Dogs pounded out 19 hits, the
second highest total of the
season, to send the Catamounts
home hurting 15-3. The Dogs are
36-7 overall after winning their
11th straight game and lead the
SEC with a 12-3 record.
Georgia took the lead for good
in the third inning 2-1 when
shortstop J.R. Showalter scored
McKay Smith and Jeff Cooper on
a double down the left-field line.
Over the next five innings,
Georgia crossed the plate 13
times and cracked 16 hits.
“Every one of our guys hit well
today,” Showalter said. ‘We’re on
a roll right now. Today, I man
aged to reach on a fastball,
change-up, and a curve. It feels
great to be able to hit like that."
Showalter (.360) went three-
for-four on the day and scored
three runs to ease the burden
placed on Wildes, who was faced
with getting a pitching staff back
on track that gave up 11 Cat
amount runs Tuesday.
The freshman right-hander
bounced back after giving up a
run on two sharp singles in the
first and shut out WCU (30-22)
the next three innings, giving up
just two hits over that span.
‘This is unbelievable. I just
can’t explain it,” Wildes said. “1
had a chance to relax out there
today because our players were
really hitting the ball. Knowing
these guys are going to score runs
for me makes it that much easier
to pitch."
Wildes (4.63) allowed three
runs in seven innings to earn his
fourth win against two losses this
season.
Tracy struggled early, but he
did a fine job of coming back,”
Georgia coach Steve Webber said.
“Right now we are playing good
ball. Our hitters are doing an ex
cellent job with their pitch selec
tion and that helps out our
pitchers on the mound."
WCU jumped out to a 1-0 lend
in the first inning when Mark
Poarch knocked in Rodney Tesh
with a single up the middle. After
that, the Catamounts could only
muster single runs in the fifth
and seventh
Starter Jack Kimel (9-4) took
the loss.
In addition to an offensive ef
fort which saw eight Bulldogs get
more than two hits, freshman
right-handed pitcher Kendall
Rhine made his first appearnnce
as a Diamond Dog. Rhine, who is
coming off his stint with the SEC
champion Bulldog basketball
team, retired WCU in order in
the eighth and recorded one
strikeout. Junior Joe Bodvake (0-
1, 5.37) then got the nod from
Webber to finish the game.
“I was pretty nervous going in
there today,” Rhine said. “After
all, it was my first appearance on
a college baseball team. I was so
excited that I had to make sure I
took my time. It was a good
feeling though. In high school, I
really think that I pitched better
when I was nervous.”
Webber has indicated that
Rhine will come out of the

Chris Lancette’s Journal...
ON BOARD EASTERN FLIGHT
95 — Looking out the window of
Seat 30A over the western United
States, I day-dream right out of my
speech class book and into my des
tination — Corvallis, Ore., the
sight of the NCAA women’s gym
nastics national championships.
I’m headed out to cover na
tionals, file some stories on Earth
Day in the Pacific Northwest, and
experience for the first time a re
gion of the country I know only by
the breathtaking pictures in the
encyclopedia.
First, nationals.
As amazing as it is to me that a
little thing like air can lift a multi
ton plane (even an Eastern one),
it’s equally amazing that gymnasts
can throw their bodies over,
around and on the little four-inch
wide deathwish known as the bal
ance beam.
Think about it. Four inches —
smaller than the width of a man’s
shoe. I tried to walk across one
once, but I never could quite figure
out how to stand up on the thing.
I’m thinking especially about the
beam because that’s the apparatus
the third-seeded Gym Dogs open
the meet on.
It’s the most treacherous of the
four events and it strikes fear in
the hearts of coaches, and injects in
performers a strange mixture of
fear and adrenaline.
I wrote Wednesday that the first
thing Georgia must do to repeat
the national championship is to
make sure it’s not overly confident.
The second thing the Lady Dogs
must do, the first physical chal
lenge, is to stick the beam.
If they blow the beam, they’ll for
feit their NCAA crown. And
‘If they blow the
beam, they’ll forfeit
their NCAA crown.’
blowing it doesn’t just mean three
of six performers falling off the
demon stick.
If Georgia has to count one fall,
they may find themselves behind
and unable to catch up after only
the first rotation.
The Super Six teams — Utah,
Alabama, Lousiana State, Ne
braska and UCLA — are that good.
