Softball champs to go for gold one more time
By ROBERT McDONALD
Sports Writer
What a difference a year makes.
Last season, the men's intra
mural Boftball team Two Day in
the Hole surprised a lot of people,
including themselves, by winning
the campus championship. With an
always solid defense and timely
hitting, the club pulled ofT upset
after upset in the late rounds of the
tournament to win the title.
“Last season we really didn’t
know what to expect,” team co-cap
tain Mike Sanders said. "We
started to get more serious about
playing later in the tournament."
With a championship under its
belt, Sanders said the expectations
for the team are much higher this
season
'I've had a lot of people come up
to me and ask if we’ll nave a good
team again," he said, ‘There seems
to be a lot more pressure on us."
Pressure or not, Two Days
should repeat as champions. In its
first game, Two Days swatted the
Swack Attack 14-3.
sty
and second baseman Glenn We-
yant returning, the team’s greatest
strength — infield defense — re
mains intact.
“I’m not worried at all about the
defense,” Sanders said.
One worry Sanders will have is
if his team can contend with the
talented In the Pink squad, which
won its first game 17-1 over the E-
xpreee despite missing several
players.
Comprised mostly of players
from last year’s powerful Southern
Comfort team and a few key addi
tions, In the Pink may be strong
enough to keep Two Days perma
nently in the hole. The two teams
meet May 3.
Though Two Days and In the
Pink look like the teams to beat,
the season should boil down to
more than a two-team race.
The Spachonet, a final four team
a year ago, and the Rho Boy, a
team comprised of many players
from last season's final four con
tender, Alpha Gamma Rho, should
be there right to the end.
GYM DOGS
From page 1
But despite the good start for the
Gym Dogs, the Utes and the Tide
were pulling away from the the
pack after competing in their first
events. Bama cranked out a 48.725
on bars, while Utah posted a
48.975 on vault.
The Lady Dogs then moved to
the floor exercise and tumbled and
danced their way to a 48.575.
Wright and Chris Rodis each
scored a 9.75.
The glimmer of hope that they
could pull off a huge upset was
erased as Alabama carded a 48.725
on beam while Utah blistered the
bars with a 49.050.
Next up for Georgia was the
vault — an apparatus that has tra
ditionally proven to be a great
friend and detested foe depending
on the athletes injuries or perfor
mances. But the Lady Dogs faces
registered no signs of trepidation
as they sprang to a 48.125 perfor
mance.
Freshman standout Heather
Stepp paced the squad with a 9.725
on the apparatus.
Knowing the title was out of
reach but wanting to battle for
third place, Georgia unloaded a
season-high 48.675 on the uneven
bars. Wright’s 9.875 capped off the
scoring that was preceeded in part
by Rodis’ 9.85 and Sandy Row-
lette’s 9.775
Utah recorded a 48.050 on beam
and a 48.825 on its last two events.
Alabama posted a 48.075 on floor
and a 49.050 on vault in its re
maining events.
UCLA took fourth, followed by
Nebraska (5), LSU (6), Oregon
State (7), Cal State (8), Towson
State (9), Florida and Arizona (tie,
10th) and Ohio State (12).
