Young Dogs play serious ball
despite freshmen escapades
By ERIC GARBER
Sports Writer
Georgia left fielder Ray Suplee sits in the dugout
awaiting his chance to show Dog fans the power of his
freshman bat. The batter before him, Doug Radzie-
wicz, pops out. “Here’s my chance,” thinks Suplee as
he grabs his favorite bat. Suddenly the Philadelphia
native smells smoke and looks down. It seems that
some of his upperclassman teammates thought it ap
propriate to light a match to his shoelaces.
Nobody said being a freshman is easy.
Of course, it wouldn’t be easy for the Georgia base
ball team to be 38-7 and ranked fifth in the nation
while leading the SEC with a 14-4 record if it wasn’t
for Suplee and his freshman cohorts, among them
pitcher/DH Tracy Wildes and pitcher Stan Payne. An
other freshman, Kendall Rhine, has just joined the
team and should enhance the Dogs’ bullpen.
“Our freshmen have been a tremendous part of our
team, but I wouldn’t say that I’m surprised,” Georgia
coach Steve Webber said.
The three cradlers, who all turned down major
league contracts to play at Georgia, have become vital
to the Diamond Dogs’ push at the SEC title and per
haps its second College World Series appearance.
“I knew what I was getting into when I decided to
play at this level,” said Suplee with a grin as he tried
to ignore thoughts of the match prank. “Actually, I’m
a little surprised I’ve been able to play this well on
this team. It’s a great credit to the coaching stafThere.
They knew exactly how to utilize my talent.”
Suplee has established himself as Georgia’s ev
eryday left fielder despite the fact that he didn’t ex
periment with outfield play until his senior year of
high school. He was drafted in the fourth round of last
June’s Major League Baseball draft by the Kansas
City Royals.
‘flaking the transition defensively was a unique
experience for me,” Suplee said. ‘The guys here did a
great job making it easier. It may sound stupid, but
we’re actually like a family and do all sorts of things
together. This is why I’m glad I came here.”
Suplee attended Sarasota High School, the same
school of current Georgia shortstop J.R. Showalter
and past players Roger Miller and Derek Lilliquist.
Said fellow freshman Tracy Wildes, “I’m really glad
that we, as incoming youth, have been able to con
tribute this much. It’s a great feeling knowing that
Suplee and the rest of the guys are back there fielding
fly balls that I give up.”
Earlier in the season, the right-handed Wildes, u
29th-round pick by the Boston Red Sox, said that he
didn’t know if he could pitch or hit at the college level
claiming he “is just a freshman up here with the big
guys.” Has his attitude changed?
“Oh yeah, I really feel like I have grown so much
since the beginning of the year and I have a lot more
confidence," Wildes said. “The coaches have told me
not to get to pressed on one particular thing and just
let it happen. I’ve always known I could hit, but 1
needed help with my pitching.”
Wildes, from Jacksonville, FL., is 4-2 this season
and has a 4.63 ERA in 44.7 innings pitched. He is
fourth on the team with 23 strikeouts. As a batter, he
has hit five homeruns in 115 at bats.
Payne, a lefW who missed over six weeks earlier in
the season with mononucleosis, has still managed to
win four games against no losses. The Athens native
was drafted in the second round of last June’s draft by
the L.A. Dodgers.
“It was a huge let down,” Payne said about his ab
sence. “I had worked so hard to get where I was and
then I was suddenly sick. Now that I’m back and feel
100 percent, I think I can go out there and win every
time. The coaches were helpful and are a big reason I
decided to come to Georgia.”
The three youngsters have contributed significant
rtggregate numbers. For example:
• Suplee and Wildes have a combined 64 RBI, 19
percent of the team total.
• Wildes and Payne have combined to strikeout 42
batters, 16 percent of Georgia’s total.
Although their baseball talent has them popular
among coaches and teammates, do these guys do
things together outside the baseball diamond?
“Since all of us freshman live in McWhorter Hall,
we get a chance to hang out together,” Wildes said.
Suplee contributes the most vivid examples of what
actually goes on in a freshman baseball player’s ev
eryday life.
‘The first day I lived in the dorm, I was laying in
my room when I heard a cracking sound outside the
door,” he said. “When I opened it, a trash can full of
water completely soaked me. Later I found out that
the culprit was my roommate (sophomore catcher J.P.
Stewart).”
No, being a freshman isn’t easy, but it can be re
warding.
