Chris Rodis: Wins her second award on bars in NCAAs
By CHRIS LANCETTE
Sports Writer
CORVALLIS, Ore.—It wasn’t
surprising that Georgia senior Cor-
rinne Wright earned her ninth All-
American award with a 38.875 all-
around score in Frida/s NCAA
gymnastics championships. But
about the only person that ex
pected sophomore teammate Chris
Rodis to caputure her second
award on bars during Saturday’s
individual event competition was
Rodis herself.
Prior to the start of the season,
the 5-1 broadcasting m^jor from
Fullerton, Calif., said an All-Amer
ican award was on her wish list —
behind a second national
championship ring. After posting a
career-high 9.850 Friday night to
earn the right to compete the fol
lowing night, Rodis earned a 9.70
and an eighth-place finish and the
All-American honors that accom
panies a Top Eight finish.
One out of two isn’t too bad.
“It feels pretty great,” Rodis
said. “I went out there and did my
job for the team the first night and
myself the second.”
And asked what it’s like to
achieve a goal after publicly
stating it os an objective, Rodis ap
peared to fight back a great big
grin.
“It’s nice to be able to go into the

gym at the beginning of the season
and then finish where you want,”
Rodis said.
Georgia coach Suzanne Yoculan
said that Rodis’ dedication and en
thusiasm enable her to achieve any
goal she sets for herself
“Gymnastically, Chris isn’t the
most talented athlete in the gym,
but she has worked harder to get
the most out of herself,” Yoculan
said. “And I think her over
whelming enthusiasm for the sport
is the determining factor in her
drive.”
Rodis agrees.
“I definitely have a lot of enthu
siasm,” she said. "Since I was little,
I always loved being in the spot
light. Performing really turns me
on. I love it.*

Close win for Netters

Georgia's No. 3 double* team of
Mik* Morrison and Patricio Ar
nold clinched a 8-4 Georgia vic
tory over Auburn Tuesday with a
4-6, 6-4. 6-3 win over the Tiger*’
David Ekerot and Mike Hegarty.
The Georgia duo, who clinched
their sixth dual match of the
season, broke Hegarty’e serve in
the eighth game of the final set to
go up 6-3. Morrison, a senior
playing in hia homa final dual
match, served out the match, but
not after the two Auburn
freshmen squandered two break
opportunities. Th# Auburn
tandem was 0-8 on bresk oppor
tunities in the third set.
“Mike and Patricio kapt up
their concentration, remained fo-
cueed and stayed afloat during
the rough times in th* match,
Georgia coach Manuel Diaz said.
Besides the Auburn tandem’s
inability to capitalize on their
abundance of break opportunities
in the final set, it was Morrison’s
clutch returns of service which
allowed for the only break of
serve in th* third set.
"I’m a senior, playing in my
last home match, so I just went
for it,” Morrison said. “I thought
we played the big points better
than they did.”
Alter singles, th* two teams
were tied 3-3 as Georgia's top
netter, A1 Parker, finished ofT sin
gles play in the SEC with a per
fect 9-0 record by defeating
Ekerot 6-0, 6-4.
With the win, Georgia clinched
at least the second seeding in the
SEC Team Tournament this
weekend in Knoxville, Tenn. Th*
Dogs finished the SEC regular
season with eight pointa (8-1)
which will be added to their total
earned during the tournament to
determine the SEC champion.
