Attackers Tom DeCarlo, Rob MacK- nlght and Will Dupont were named to the team for the first time, while Dwayne Smith was named for the second straight year. America’s largest bicycle extravaganza comes to Athens From sports staff reports Don’t be suprised if you see tum bleweed rolling across the Georgia athletic fields this weekend. With the exception of the women’s golf team hosting the Women’s South eastern Intercollegiate tourna ment, no varsity team will be competing in Athens this weekend. But don’t fret, the Classic City will host one of America’s largest bicycle extravaganzas Saturday — the 11th Annual Twilight Classic Weekend. The highlight of the Classic Weekend will be the 11th Pepsi Twilight Criterium, America’s largest night-time bicycle race. Past criterium winners include Danny Clark, the 1981 World Champion, and Doug Shapiro, a 1988 U.S. Olympic Team member who won in 1989. The criterium, run on a IK loop through downtown, goes for 60 laps and starts at 8 p.m. Saturday. Two races precede the 60K race on the downtown course. The Win & Out begins at 5:45 p.m., with the Womens’ 30K race following af terward. The entire cycling weekend in Athens gets underway Saturday at 7 a.m. with the UGA Campus Races. Run on a hilly 1.4 mile loop beginning at Memorial Hall, the Campus Races will be separated into seven United States Cycling Federation classes. Now back to the varsity sports: Dog Fight in Starkviile The No. 5 Diamond Dogs look to widen their SEC lead as they tackle the Bulldogs of Mississippi State in a three-game series begin ning Saturday. After consecutive second- place finishes the last two week ends, the Track Dogs look to con tinue their strong performances in Des Moines. Bill Jones and Jolly Earle will attempt to extend their first-place winning streaks during the meet. Jones has won four in a row in the high jump, while Earle has captured five straight first- place finishes in the 1,000-, 3,000- and 10,000 meters.
